Banana of the Month Feb '05 Cool stuff here.
I used to DM a lot of D&D and all so I have some experience. Its genuinely fun for me.
No. 44: You follow the sign for about 3 blocks, as your surroundings slowly get worse and worse. The smell is pervasive as sewage and rot wafts up from the sewers and from the poor. The streets become narrow and the buildings become tall. Guard patrols wander around with bottles in their hands, and prostitutes drape themselves over their armored shoulders. The street signs are covered with grime, but every now and then the same help wanted add appears on the filthy walls.
The sign leads around the corner, leading towards a large gated complex (although it too is quite dirty). Out front three muscular and belligerent guards wielding broadswords are arguing with a poor woman dressed in rags holding a baby in her arms and another meanders around, oblivious to the situation. Across the street a few drunks look on, as well as a cloaked man with a crossbow slung on his back propped up on a cane. His face is hooded. The sky is dark and a cool breeze sweeps through the streets.
Solace: The girl points at the cute little fox and frantically tugs on her mom’s sleeve. She looks quizzically at the fox. The girl races up to you and bends over with a smile, handing you a crust of bread from her mothers arms.
Behind the mother, a grimy little man reaches towards a pouch hanging from her side. He is small and armed with a dagger tucked into his boot. He looks both ways and snatches the purse. She screams and he attempts to dart off.
Tatsumusa & Blademaster: Blademaster lands on a large, flat rooftop. Wooden cranes and winches hang high around him. Suspended from them are crates and boxes of all shapes and sizes. The air smells of salt and fish, and a cool breeze floats about. Seagulls circle around overhead. Below you are long decks made of planks of wood. Enormous Man o’ Wars are docked alongside the docks, as well as some flat, iron steam vessels. Some sailors and workers race about below, attempting to unload an extremely large box painted in red X’s. Across from you is Tatsumusa who has also just landed. You are standing about 10 feet apart. The ocean stretches out in all directions for as far as the eye can see.
Just then, the box covered in X’s drops and shatters on the ground revealing a monster. The beast has a gorilla like body covered in primal tattoos. He has 4 arms, two ending in sinewy, clawed hands. The others are small and bear 8 fingers…they appear quite dexterous. The things tail unwinds and a muscled appendage darts out, knocking two workers into the sea. It bellows and moves towards the others…
Dabura: You land in a small garden. The grass is tall and flowers grow wildly. Medium sized trees form a canopy overhead, although through a large gap you can see the darkening sky. Tombstones are laced throughout the garden, and behind you is a tall stone Cathedral: evident in the stain glassed windows and towering spires.
“Hello there my son.” Behind Dabura a small, old man sits atop a tombstone. He is wearing only baggy pants with a belt of rope. His chest and arms are strong although his hair is gray. He is playing a small flute: a haunting melody indeed.
“Would you be the angel I prayed for?”
Grappler: You tumble into the same crowd as Solace. (Its already been described). A strange déjà vu strikes you as you see the fox…perhaps you might have recognized it although there is no way to be sure. You look ahead and see a woman scream at a small man running away. However, out of the corner of your eye you see two other men leap from barrels, knives in their mouths. They dash towards a wealthy looking couple. They leap upon their two guards and slit their throats with skill. The rich father screams as he is kicked aside. The two men grab the daughter and son respectively, and race off. The square is pandemonium!

Daruba: The man plays another tune on his flute with a bright, uplifting sound. Finishing, he speaks.
"This Cathedral has stood for centuries as the pinnacle of Ordan religious society. We here worship the pantheon of Ordana, a lineage of gods descending from the great Ordana himself, of which this city was founded after." The music changes to a darker tone. He ends and continues.
"However dark deeds have been around as of late. I once held respect as a leader of the orders' oligarchy. The other four members were once wise men and women. But they have turned. They now use the Cathedral as a base of...actions of ill repute. Our basements are flooded with alcohol, our pews stacked with illegal substances. Our confession booths are fronts for harlots. My colleagues abandoned their ways long ago, they must have!" The old man looks at the sky as a tear trickles down his cheek.
"Alas. I prayed for an angel to help me solve the Order's miseries. Without a religious center the city is falling apart. Strongmen rule the streets and corruption abounds. Where can people put their faith my Aven friend if the church itself has lots its way?"
He goes back to playing his haunting tune.
Blade: (It looks stupid but who knows...) the creature swats the katanas aside, although they gash deep furrows across his hands. He turns his back from blade and swipes his tail at the plummeting man, while he punches the ground hard, breaking the wood in several places. He grasps a huge plank in one hand now.
I thought that the girl ran off into the alley to find me? I suppose I'll just pretend that for some reason, I didn't go into the alley, and the girl just walked forward a few steps... =p
Solace quickly and invisably 'tags' the cutpurse and girl's mom. [He can track them by it, and a competent magic user could see it as well, although he might not know what it is for.] Solace quickly turns and darts into the alley, turns a corner, and hops up onto the roof. He dashes across the roof, and looks for the kidnappers/murderers.

>>>Sorry about the alley...thought I had all the loose ends tied up. My bad<<<
Solace: The thief makes a huge commotion and all the guards run towards him, their attention drawn away from the two kidnappers. Solace sees them running down an alley way one building over. He loses sight of them as they enter the alley: their two prisoners either very light, or they are strong enough that the burden doesnt matter.

Daruba: "Would you really? That would be most splendid. However, it is not as simple as just dragging them out my Son. I do not know who the true enemies are here, only that their influence has perverted our sacred temple. Here is what I do know my Son. I overheard that the next shipment of material for these foul men is coming in tonight at the docks. The priest I heard this information from said that the shipment was coming in a ship called the Sanna Annia in the B Warehous district at midnight. I would have you strike within the Cathedral, but the chambers are warded and heavily guarded. It is better to cofront the foul courier of ill deeds and find out who he is working for. Afterwards, send the man to his judgement my son...it is only rigtheous." The man bows and turns back into the cathedral.
"By the way. My name is Herman of the Pale Flute. I do wish you luck my Angel. Be wary though...the skies can be an unfriendly place at night." He shudders and walks back inside, closing the door behind him.
Solace: Only one man is there, holding the boy. He races straight down the alley way, kicking a beggar out of his way as he runs. He is approximately 15 yards from the outlet onto a busy street. His companion has vanished. The clamor from the square continues behind you.

I quickly pop up behind the beast. I tense my body and leap into the air above the beasts head with my great sword drawn ready to strike at any weakness.
"A little help please"
Solace runs up to him (foxes run far faster than humans), leaps at a wall, bounces off, and lands on the man. He then fires a psi blast* derectly at him, and leaps off of him, while causing some moss to grow into small vines on the man. [They don't do anything yet.]
*EDIT: It's really weak, it'll knock him over, tops.

Tat: Your blade plunges deep into the beasts back, and blood trickles freely down its muscles. It bellows in range and he thumps at you furiously with his club. The planks creak underneath the commotion and previous damage, and small cracks begin to appear. Two of the sailors have appeared with large, powder weapons. They aim at the beast with little regard to your safety, and fire two shots at it. One gun was aimed more or less at you as it fires....
Solace: The psy blast knocks over the man, and the boy is sent tumbling into the gutter. He stands up and hunces over. He turns towards Solace. His face is covered by the comedy/tragedy mask of theaters, except his eyes are bright yellow. His body is cloaked in multiple ragged cloths, and he draws his wicked looking dagger. With almost blinding speed he rushes at Solace, jabbing twice at the Fox.
Dabura: The citizen, a pudgy little man with a backpack, nods his head at the Aven.
"Warehous district B? I happen to be heading to Warehouse District A to pick up my shipment of goods for my business. Been waiting all week too! What brings you to Ordan Sir...your manner is not of a local." The two stroll along emptying streets lit by gas lamps towards the docks.

>>>No you were right...the kid did fall down, but the bodies shifted positions. Its a trick the creature can do.<<<
Solace: The creatures mask molds into a gruesome grin as the vines wrap around him. All of a sudden, the boy is wrapped in vines and the creature is standing behind the boy. It grabs its chest and rips off some cloths, revealing a clock attached to a vial of fire. The mask grins again most hideously, and a soft voice rings in Solaces head. "I do hope your plants can shiled you meddler."
A tremendous, fiery explosion ensues from the being. The fire is liquidy and sticky, like molten iron. The conflagration is lethal to any in its radius...foxes included...
Daruba: "Oh yes indeed. Currently it is the fourth cycle of the year, so among the highbrow in society, the new fad is Goldstone." He reaches in his pocket and pulls out a small ring which glitters dully. As he puts it on his finger, the features on his body are illuminated, and the few blemishes on his face dissapear.
"It makes everyone look younger you see. Its a huge hit ever since it was discovered abroad. Now the Trade Magistrate makes a point to import the gems regularly, although the tarifs for the poor merchants are quite steep. All the same, the profits are worth it, and honest businessmen such as myself make a point to share with the merchants who ship to us."
The two approach a long stone bridge with light cart traffic. The bridge is 25 yards wide and about 200 yards long. Metal girders are strung through it. Two guards and a pompous looking man with a large book sit by the side, harassing a young girl pushing a handcart. The passerbyers look on in disgust...but they seem like they are powerless to do anything.
"Despicable guards. Ever since Commandant Hadrian retired and his nephew Jameel took over things have taken a turn for the worse. He flirts with the nobles and baronesses, his guards prey on the populace. Terrible really..."
Oh... crap... Solace leaps to the boy's shoulders, and projects a shield around them, while simultaneously causing the vines to grow protectively around them. [They will feed off of the heat, dampening the flames and assisting the shield.] I'm quite lucky that my plants can... Solace thinks wryly.
