Welcome to HNDG7. The last iteration of this game proved that it requires an upper bound on bids in order to work. Without the upper bound, the game devolves to seeing how much patience I have.
* Players may join at any time. If you want to join, simply participate in the next round. Players already in the game can sit out as many rounds as they wish.
* Each round, players PM me with a number. All players who submitted the highest number LOSE that many points, all other players gain points equal to the number they submitted.
* You do not have to post to say you are joining. Just PM me with your chosen number, and please put "High Number Death Game", "HNDG" or something similar in the subject line, as well as the round number.
* Players can go into negative scores.
* There will be a bid cap on each round.
* Players who submit a number higher than the bid cap will lose points equal to their bid, and their bid will be disqualified.
* The bid cap for round one is 100.
* After each round, the bid cap will be become the maximum of the cap from the previous round, and twice the second-highest bid from the previous round.
* Each round ends when the next round begins. This will be shown by me posting to say so in this thread, and posting the updated scoreboard. I will aim to do a new round about every 24 hours, but if it goes on longer because I can't get to the computer, the round will be extended and it won't really affect the gameplay.
* You may post on this thread to discuss the game/formulate strategy/attempt to manipulate your opponents.
* At the end of 10 Rounds, the player with the most points is announced the winner for this game, and we'll start again from round 1!
Well, obviously, no one will bet 100 for round one because there is nothing higher. It's an assured loss. Because of this, no one will bet 99, because no one will bet 100. It's an assured loss. Because of this, no one will bet 98, because no one will bet 99 or 100. It's an assured loss. Because of this...

KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

I second the integer rule. Decimals shouldn't be allowed. We'll see normalized proliferation instead of the unbound proliferation last round.

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.

Yes assuming all players play rationally everyone will submit 1 and get one point.

The weird thing is that the douches get the girls in a lot of tge cases.
True, but people also murder people, so that's more of an issue with society and the general populace's complete lack of intelligence than anything related to this rule.
OK, so I was apparently playing it a bit too safe this round. I took a bit of a bigger risk next round... but I wonder if anyone put in 193.95 this round or not.

I still think decimals are a bad idea. We're going to see people submitting 199.94999... whoever has the most 9's wins. :/ Maybe because the cap is constantly changing, this won't occur; but if we kept it constant from day to day it certainly would.

The cap does make the stakes much lower in that kind of express-the-largest-number competition. Before, the second-highest player was likely to have many orders of magnitude more points than the third; now, they are much more likely to have a tiny fraction of a point more, making it less worthwhile.
What I don't understand is how playing by the rules can make you a douche. If there are legal plays that you can't make without being a douche in a game this simple, those plays should simply be illegal. I don't really know why typing a number with many significant figures is obnoxious, but if many players believe that it is, the game would probably not be much worse if you weren't allowed to.

If there is a reasonable strategic advantage to some number of significant digits, its fine. If you notice that a player tends to bid XXX.9999, you might submit XXX.99989. Submitting an arbitrarily long string of decimal digits is pointless.

Screw that. Someone will bid 100. I'm betting 99.
what are you talking about, I bet 100, so go ahead and bet 99.999
You can still just hold your finger on a number until it's thousands of digits long.
I think the cap is a fair one.

I meant in addition to the cap presented right now.
Life has a rulebook, and nobody knows all the rules, however, Rule #1 is understood by many and I shall say it unto you.
Rule #1:
Don't Be a Douche.
Rule #2
If you're a douche, people will ignore you.

Though I gotta say that Kill-Joy was pretty ballsie.
I did
You know, I almost believe that.
I thought someone was gonna bid 98, so I bid 97. I figured either 1st or second place this round was likely.
But yea I'm super-ballsie.
A picture of me:
Also a great toy.
