Lorwyn played a hefty role this week, obviously. GlenNZ' extra fifteen points managed to push him into the front few, but lacked the tiniest bit to make first place. The cream of the Barren Glory decks have finally risen to the top, and they look to have a lasting place in 5CB, being better in almost every way to the old Good Will Hunting strategy. jcsuperstar's deck, in fact, was quite an obvious one, and seems to be about as good as it's ever going to get, almost requiring Aura of Silence or something like Kami of Ancient Law to beat it going second. Chimp's deck is a little easier to tie and a lot harder to beat. And let me just be in the first million or so people to say that Thoughtseize is way better than Duress. Obviously.
1 jcsuperstar - The further adventures of cheese
Barren Glory, Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Yawgmoth's Will This build almost makes me wonder if something needs to be banned. It really isn't easy to build a deck to beat this without warping the metagame quite a ways.
2 SumPhatGuy - Blue Bombshell.dec
Black Lotus, Chain of Vapor, Disrupting Shoal, Riftwing Cloudskate, Viscerid Deepwalker The lack of a backup plan if anything went wrong plus the lack of any great power in this deck really hurt its ability to succeed.
3 Tlaon - I dig Chandra
Black Lotus, Chandra Nalaar, City of Traitors, Powder Keg, Soldevi Digger Unlimited removal wins an awful lot of games. The majority of games you lost were when your mana base could be attacked.
4 Wrath_of_Dog - Let's try Channel this week
Channel, Daze, Dryad Arbor, Nullstone Gargoyle, Tropical Island Nullstone Gargoyle is a tough card to get around, but 9 mana is steep.
5 Meat Popsicle - Chalice at 1 wrecks me.dec
Dryad Arbor, Funeral Charm, Innocent Blood, Swamp, Thoughtseize Lots and lots of disruption with an easily killable WC means lot of ties for you. Happily, no one played Chalice this week. BTW, playing removal that kills your only win condition half the time is not the best strategy.
6 andelijah - *Stuff*
Leyline of the Void, Lightning Bolt, Raze, Taiga, Thallid Raze? I'm pretty sure that card was only good for enabling ties. I'm sure there has to be something better.
7 Chimpanzee - Fix'd Fix'd
Archaeological Dig, Barren Glory, Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Orim's Chant Very nice build. Too bad counterspells were not more prevalent this week or you would have cleaned up.
8 The Mad Tapper - Dreadlock
Dread, Foil, Island, Nether Spirit, Subterranean Hangar Yes, my deck lost to yours. No, that doesn't mean that Dread Subterranean Hangar into Dread is remotely fast enough.
9 Mogg - "Planeswalking for me, no plainswalking for you."
Black Lotus, Garruk Wildspeaker, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Misdirection Good job coming up with something that totally wrecks Thoughtseize decks. Only average vs. the rest of the field, though.
10 carrion pigeons - Scavenger's back, but it costs 7 and takes two cards
Aura of Silence, Black Lotus, Eternal Witness, Galepowder Mage, Rushwood Grove Yep, you heard it here first!
11 GlenNZ - Not good, but what the heck
Doran, the Seige Tower, Selesnya Sanctuary, Swamp, Thoughtseize, Vindicate Not bad at all, especially considering the high quantity of Lorwyn cards.

Some of you may have been in shock since we invaded Canada and Mexico, but fear not, it was for a good cause. Now that we conrol North America, we produce an extra 5 armies a turn.^_^
Its banned in 3CB because its better there. You don't have as many cards to get rid of, and opponents have less cards as an answer to it. Disenchant and variants kill the deck, no? If you're worried about it, play such cards.
Well, Disenchant only kills the deck if 1) you can play it on the first turn, and 2) it doesn't kill your strategy to do so, and 3) if your opponent isn't running a card that stops that strategy from working. The vast majority of deck strategies are going to be wrecked by the card on the draw, since very few can seriously represent the first two, and I'm not sure I'm sure if I'm comfortable with a card that generally ties, at worst. That said, it seems to me like there are only a few really worthwhile decks to make with it, and the nature of the system here will start to make it worse if people start repeating identical strategies.

He can never target me Thoughtseize since I'll Foil it and have Nether Spirit on the board to outrace the Arbor. He can never target me with Funeral Charm since I'll just discard Nether Spirit and outrace him. Once I resolve a creature it will outrace him, but if he uses Innocent Blood his win condition dies and mine are both recursive.
If he plays Thoughtseize on me or Vindicate on my land, I Foil it and draw with my recursive blocker. He has to do one of those because if he attempts to play Doran before either of those I Foil it and win with my recursive attacker.

No. If he plays Thoughtseize, and you don't counter, it's a draw (discard Dread, you play Spirit to block Arbor, they trade with Innocent Blood). If you do counter, he plays Funeral Charm to get rid of Dread and then kills off your Spirit with Innocent Blood, then wins with Arbor. So you don't counter and you tie.
If he plays Thoughtseize on me or Vindicate on my land, I Foil it and draw with my recursive blocker. He has to do one of those because if he attempts to play Doran before either of those I Foil it and win with my recursive attacker. Fixed.

Here's another argument for banning glory: Chimpanzee's deck is at least as good as trinisphere or meddling mage for winning on the play, and they're both banned. The disenchant argument is invalid, as you can say similar things for both of those.
A couple differences: Disenchant/most other similar cards cost 1 more with the sphere. It's much easier to get two (or one with Demystify) mana than three (three usually takes a lotus, which is also wrecked by the sphere. The Meddling Mage argument also loses because it can keep you from killing it himself.
Second, Barren Glory takes an entire deck to make it work. The previous cards are too good because you can run other stuff as well. Killing the sphere, for instance, may not give you immediate victory, whereas killing Barren Glory essentially does.
Not that I don't want the Glory banned, I just don't think its so powerful it needs to be, yet.

So putting it on the Watchlist is fine for now, yes?
Plains + Demystify. All it takes is an instant speed method of getting rid of the glory, he can't chant you on both turns (your turn, and his next upkeep).
Okay, since the site was down for 4 out of the 7 days in which submissions for the next round were possible, a record low number of submissions have been sent. As such, I'm going to keep the round open until tomorrow at 3pm, EST, so all those people who were disrupted from getting in their deck have a chance.

An instant speed method that doesn't rely on you dropping lotus or moxen.
That narrows it down to chain of vapor and demystify.
Not to mention that you can't ever tap out on your turn, using that strategy, which means that you can only play with instants, or else play with actual lands, and more of them than are technically required to run your deck. That narrows the metagame possibilities impressively.

Not true...
If you tap out on your turn and they play Glory on their turn, you still have your full next turn plus their upkeep to deal with it. As long as your removal is instant speed, it will get through.

I assume carrion pigeons was talking about a deck on the draw. Barren Glory, like most combos, is easy to stop going first. On the draw, though, it allows fewer answers than most.
I know. I maintain that Plains, Eager Cadet, Erase would 6-0 both Glory-Chant and Glory-Will, because you have a whole turn plus an upkeep to deal with the enchantment. So it's not quite as dire as CP suggests, though it may still be banworthy.

Sure, so SPECIFICALLY METAGAMING against the card is the only way to go 6-0 against it. That's 6 points. How well would your deck do vs anything else?
The mere fact that the deck is so powerful that you have to build a deck specifically to beat it means that it is banworthy, just off that.

Should be: 2-2
If he plays Thoughtseize on me or Vindicate on my land, I Foil it and draw with my recursive blocker. He has to do one of those because if he attempts to play Doran before either of those I Foil it and win with my recursive attacker.
Record: 3-2
Simpsons Mafia (Newbie) - Vanilla Mafia - Win
The Fiasco Corporation - Town Reporter - Loss
Doomsday Mafia - Mafia Roleblocker - Win
Battle Royale Mafia - Serial Daykiller - Loss
Danger City Mafia - Vanilla Town - Win
EDIT: Never mind, I'm an idiot.

Of course.
I have no problem banning it either. I just don't think it needs banning yet.

An instant speed method that doesn't rely on you dropping lotus or moxen.
That narrows it down to chain of vapor and demystify.

Not true...
If you tap out on your turn and they play Glory on their turn, you still have your full next turn plus their upkeep to deal with it. As long as your removal is instant speed, it will get through.

The mere fact that the deck is so powerful that you have to build a deck specifically to beat it means that it is banworthy, just off that.
The prosecution rests.
