Week 3 of ABT#2
This round was 3CB ELR Block Wars.
This week, we had a party.
A Block Party.
The Entries
01 Feyd_Ruin :: "Curse" Cursed Scroll / Ensnaring Bridge / Ghost Town When I decided on Block Party, I thought for sure I'd pick Invasion block, since it was my favorite block to play. However, this just fell into place perfectly. I've always wanted to explore Cursed Scroll decks, and Ghost Town being in the same block was pure perfection.

3CB ELR Backbuild
Almost everyone has a love-hate relationship with backbuild. We all love seeing the crazy horrible ways we can win so poorly, and we hate it when someone finds the cheesy impossible to lose to decks.
That said, Land Rule formats always pose interesting challenges for backbuild. It's much harder to build impossibly contrived decks, but when you do, it's that much better.
At the beginning of each game, players switch decks and then play to win with their opponent's deck. Thus, each player builds his deck to be as unlikely to win as possible.
However, each player's deck must be able to beat the 3 "test decks" listed below:
Blind Magic is an online Magic format played here on the forums. Players play with an extremely limited deck size, such as 3 cards. Players begin with their entire deck (ie: those three cards) in hand and have no library (players don't lose when they fail to draw a card because of this). Due to the extremely limited number of play options given with their small deck size, games are calculated, rather then played, with an absolute determined winner (or a tie). Each player plays a match of two games against each other player who submitted - once going first, and once going second. Wins, losses, and ties for each of those two games are calculated by the moderator and players. The actual fun of the game comes from trying to decide which cards you will be playing.
What is the All Blind Tournament?
The All Blind Tournament is a four week quadrathlon XCB tournament, which spans all card blind formats and embraces a progressive anti-metagame. For each week of the four week tournament, a new XCB format is announced for players to enter. Players compete for points (similiar to the PotM points for previous XCB games) each round. At the end of the four week tournament, the player who has accumulated the most points over the four weeks wins the tournament, and receives a real-world prize.
Tournament Prize
This tournament, Feyd_Ruin has graciously donated the prize up for grabs.
Players will be playing for a mint Thragtusk.
Player Standings
Previous standings will always be posted below the opening post of each week's thread.
Standings will be updated after the current week has been completed and score checking has finished.
Full Rules of All Blind Tournament
Below is the current full listing of all ABT rules, including the Permanent Banned list.
If you find anything confusing or need clarification, either post in thread or PM the moderator.
0. Overview
All Blind Tournament (ABT) is a four week Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit decks (following the week's guidelines) which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1. Game Rules
1.1. Except for the changes described in these rules, games follow the rules for a normal game of Magic.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly X cards (X defined by the week's format), which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
1.5. Each player plays two games (one match) against each other player.
1.5a. Each player is the starting player once per match.
1.5b. If no player can win, then the game is a draw.
1.5c. Games are played with perfect information.
1.5d. Games are played optimally; players attempt to win, draw, or extend the game – in that order.
1.6. Any special rules of a given week within a tournament shall overrule any applicable ABT rules given herein, so long as it is implicitly stated, or obviously implied.
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the ABT moderator.
2.1a. Players submit their decks by private message (pm).
2.1b. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent deck is counted.
2.1c. An illegal deck is not counted. At the moderator’s discretion, an illegal deck may be replaced by a similar deck – in which any offending cards have been removed or replaced.
2.1d. The moderator determines the result of each match. Players may challenge results, but not after the winner of the tournament has been announced as final.
2.1e. A player may name his or her deck. If a player does not, then the moderator may name it.
2.2. Decks are subject to some restrictions.
2.2a. A player may not submit a deck that can – against any deck – win the game or force any card(s) in an opponent's hand to change zones before the end of an opponent's first turn.
2.2b. A player may not submit a deck that can't win both games of a match against at least one deck satisfying all rules.
2.2c. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1).
2.2d. A deck may include any number of any card that will become legal in Vintage upon release of a set that has been revealed fully and officially since the start of the round.
2.2e. A deck may not include any cards on the week's banned list.
2.2f. A deck may not include any of the permanently banned cards listed in the next section.
2.3. Points determine tournament standings.
2.3a. Players are ranked – first to last – in order of decreasing number of points.
2.3b. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. However, a player earns only 2 points for a split match (a win and a loss).
2.3c. The combined result of both games in a match is called a "match result". Possible match results are: 6 – two game wins, 4 – a win and a draw, 3 or 2 or S – a win and a loss, 2 – two draws, and 1 – a draw and a loss.
2.3d. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
2.4. The player with the most tournament points over the course of a tournament is the Tournament Winner.
2.4a. A tournament includes exactly four weekly rounds.
2.4b. Each round, each player receives tournament points equal to his or her average match result for that round multiplied by 100, rounded to the nearest integer.
40
(For example, a player scoring 6-6-6-6-X-0-0-0 in a round with 8 decks (7 opponents) receives 340 tournament points (24 / 7 x 100).)
2.4c. At the end of the tournament, the player with the most tournament points wins.
2.4d. If two or more players are tied for the most tournament points at the end of the tournament, a special tie breaker round will take place to determine a single winner.
40
Only the tied players will play during the round, and rules and formats are at the moderators discretion.
3. Prize Rules
3.1. A prize shall be given to the tournament winner.
3.1a. The winner of the tournament shall be given the prize described within the tournament, or a suitable replacement upon the tournament's end.
3.1b. The Tournament Winner may decline the prize. If so, the tournament winner may designate the prize to be given to another player.
3.1c. Players under the age of 18 are ineligible for prizes, due to federal laws regarding the sharing of personal information of minors.
3.1d. If the winning player was a moderator in two or more weeks of the tournament, the prize shall instead be given to the player coming in 2nd. This is to ensure fair play.
3.1e. In the event a prize cannot be given to a player, the moderator will do his best to find another suitable way to reward the player.
3.1f. No prize is 100% guaranteed, but is assumed upon a good faith basis. Lets face it, with international customs, weird laws, etc, we cannot guarantee anything. We'll do our best.
3.2. As a Prized Tournament, special scoring rules and practices are in place.
3.2a. Players are responsible for their own scoring. Assistance will be given, especially to new players, but it is ultimately up to each player to ensure his or her scoring is completed and accurate.
3.2b. Incomplete scores are considered losses, even to both players of a match if necessary. This is to make sure a winner is determined at the end of a tournament.
3.2c. The Moderator always has the final word regarding scores and rules. Players may question any scoring the moderator does, until the moderator says that a match's scoring is final.
3.2d. The Moderator may, at his or her discretion, determine a match is too difficult to calculate and give it a tie score, or his or her best guess. Again, this is final.
3.2e. Once a winner has been announced as final, that player shall receive the prize, even if errors in scoring or points are shown later.
Permanently Banned Cards
The following cards are permanently banned in the All Blind Tournament.
Each round will have an additional banned list that extends beyond, but always includes, these cards.
Antonia sacrifices everything to Gargadon - including Dodecapod - before dying and before Restore Balance resolves. With Ghost Town either discarded or sacrificed, Feyd_Ruin can't use Scroll.
I THINK that Metrognome can race the Hydra in 13 on the play, but not on the draw, but I'm tired to I might be wrong.
And I definitely win against 15 if I steal a turn 1 dragonlord on turn 3--Lord can race even Valakut/Oracle. I THINK I still win if he forces me to confiscate his Valakut by just dropping lands, then only plays Dragonlord once my hand is forced. But it's possible that on the play he can get his dragon big enough to kill me.
On the plus side, I was agonizing between Metrognome and Phyrexian Processor as my kill; to the best of my knowledge, there was literally no difference between the two for me this round.
I considered exactly Mogg's deck, which obviously would have done much better than I did. I also last-minute switched from Mutavault/Bitterblossom/Spellstutter Sprite. I haven't done all the math, but if it was better than this deck, it wasn't by much.
Well, my deck is easy to calculate this week. Either they interact with me (and I lose), or they don't (and I win).

Deck notes:
06 tomsloger :: "Lich Lord of Impossible Calculations"
Ajani Vengeant / Banefire / Lich Lord of Unx
Suggested: 0-6
Each and every card in here can beat me by itself! =)
07 Antonia :: "Gargageddon"
Dodecapod / Greater Gargadon / Restore Balance
Suggested: 0-6
In order to play energy shield, I have to put 2 lands into play. Then, Antonia preps a Greater Garg, and makes restore balance cast just as Garg is about to enter play, sacrificing everything on the board. I lose 2 lands to the sacrifice, which causes energy shield to hit graveyard. I can use foundry right then, but I won't redraw energy field until my 3rd draw which is too late (Garg enters with haste).
Edit:
Whoops, for some reason I had match 9 backwards.
vs 09 TANE :: "Chong's Tongs"
Capsize / Forbid / Scalding Tongs
Suggested: 6-0.
Capsize is too slow to stop Gorge (He needs to capsize THREE lands a turn to reduce my land count by 1). Energy field doesn't get bounced until turn 6, and by then he's too far behind the 1 damage/turn race to catch up either.
08 Mogg :: "J R R Tokens"
Gavony Township / Lingering Souls / Mayor of Avabruch
vs
04 benbuzz790 :: "Benbuzz Special"
Comet Storm / Kargan Dragonlord / Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
Mogg listed: 6-0, Suggested: 3-3
Benbuzz on the play.
B1: Valakut, Mountain
M1: Township, Mayor
B2: 2x Mountain, Dragonlord, level once
M2: Souls
B3: 3x Mountain, Comet Storm targeting Mayor and a spirit for 1. Attack for 2 (M18)
M3: More souls. Attack for 1 (B19).
B4: 4x Mountain, Level 5 times. Attack for 4. (M14)
M4: Use Township, Attack for 6 (B13).
B5: 5x Mountain, Level 2 times, Attack for 12. (M2)
M5: Use Township, Attack for 9 (B4)
B6: 6x Mountain, wins.
Alternate play, no early souls.
B1: Valakut, Mountain
M1: Township, Mayor
B2: 2x Mountain, Dragonlord, level once
M2: No spell.
B3: Mayor flips. 3x Mountain, level 4 more times, attack for 4. (M16)
M3: Souls, attack for 3. (B17). 1 ground token.
B4: 4x Mountain, Level 3 times. Attack with a 10/8. No blocks (M6)
M4: Use Township, Attack for 12 (B5). Dies. If more souls or keep fliers, still don't have enough toughness to block flier.
i apologize for an extremely complicated deck.
i have my line as 6 0 6 0 3 X 2 0 6 0 0 6 6 6 0 0 for a total of 40 i think. but, frankly, im probably wrong.
a few interesting ones:
03 Reyemile :: "Tricksy Lil' Gnomes" Confiscate / Metrognome / Exploration 433.0 6-0 ajani can keep metrognome tapped down (occasionally helixing to keep it in banefire range) until reyemile has to confiscate it, at which point i burn it out and outrace gnomes with lichlord
12 Lithel :: "Field of Dreams" Energy Field / Shivan Gorge / Thran Foundry
6-0 i went through a lot of figuring for this one, but i realized that energy field does absolutely nothing against me. banefire cant be prevented and lich lord causes loss of life. actually, this wasnt interesting at all...
the valakut decks were a much more interesting matchup before i realized valakut triggers could target creatures.
I was looking at Creation or Destruction. I had thought Creation was on the banlist, but looked at post 1, didn't see it, so I used it. Of course, that is for next week's thing, not this weeks.
I do find it humorous that cards like Beacon of Creation are banned sporadically, yet wheel effect cards never make the banlist. Just sayin'.
I try to play this game to have fun (I have no expectation of winning the actual prize), but I am not having a whole lot of fun. Too many discard so and so's hand that I am not fully aware of.

I missed this line when I scored this match 0-6 in my favor, but it only works when you're on the play. If you're on the draw I'll have made TWO gnomes before you can play your Ajani, meaning my creatures can race your Planeswalker's +1 ability and kill him through combat damage long before Banefire is a threat.

Have fun everyone, and laters.
Sorry you're leaving. We'll miss you!
That said, the sheer number of "discard your hand" decks for the past few weeks has been disconcerting.
Didn't the rule used to be, no hand discard till both players had completed TWO turns? Can we go back to that version?
Didn't the rule used to be, no hand discard till both players had completed TWO turns? Can we go back to that version?
2CB with the Expanded Land Rule had the following additional rule: "Until each player has completed two turns, cards in a player's hand can't be moved by effects of sources an opponent owns, and spells can't by countered by effects of sources an opponent owns."
Following the discussion a few weeks ago about random costs, that rule could be made more precise as follows: "Until each player has completed two turns, a cost or effect that would counter a spell controlled by an opponent of the player who paid the cost or controlled the effect instead does not counter that spell, and a cost or effect that would would cause a card in the hand of an opponent of the player who paid the cost or controlled the effect to change zones instead does not cause that card to change zones." A clearer wording probably exists, too.
5CB had the following rule: "A player may not submit a deck that can – against any deck – win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn."
I'm with Reyemile on the discard rule. Waiting until after turn 2 works better.
The Entries 01 Feyd_Ruin :: "Curse" Cursed Scroll / Ensnaring Bridge / Ghost Town
Cursed Scroll starts on turn 4, but it can't race Valakut starting on turn 6 with comet storm to the head.
6-0
02 Draco9 :: "Exploring Yawgmoth's Dirty Mind" Exploration / Corrupt / Phyrexian Processor
By the time you have enough swamps in play to kill the 8/8 dragonlord, I can burn you out with Comet Storm in response.
6-0
03 Reyemile :: "Tricksy Lil' Gnomes" Confiscate / Metrognome / Exploration
I think you've got this one, but I'm not 100% sure.
0-6
05 WhammWhamme :: "Shocker" Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 12, and valakut will kill you on turn 12. So you get me on the play, but not on the draw.
3-3
06 tomsloger :: "Lich Lord of Impossible Calculations" Ajani Vengeant / Banefire / Lich Lord of Unx
I play valakut and nothing else, holding up mana to zap Lich Lord when he hits the field. Valakut kills ajani before he can ultimate, then kills you before you can banefire me.
6-0
07 Antonia :: "Gargageddon" Dodecapod / Greater Gargadon / Restore Balance
I think I can just win with Kargan by attacking for 8 on turns 4 and 5, then throwing comet storm at you.
6-0
10 VikingMetal4L :: "Jenny" Jenara, Asura of War / Oblivion Ring / Tidehollow Sculler
Sculler + Ring is nice. I don't think I can beat it. Sculler takes Comet Storm. Ring hits Kargan. Once I can kill Sculler with Valakut on turn 6, Jenara is out of range of Comet Storm
0-6
11 faradan :: "A group of Mongeese is called a Troop :teach:" Blurred Mongoose / Recoil / Vindicate
You need to vindicate Valakut, or it just races Mongoose. You can recoil Kargan after I level him, but I discard Comet Storm. Kargan races Mongoose.
6-0
15 AtheistGod :: "Dragonlord" Kargan Dragonlord / Oracle of Mul Daya / Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
If I'm on the play:
We both play kargan on turn 2 and level once. On turn 3, I cast comet storm killing your Kargan. On turn 3, you play forest, Oracle, Mountain. Your board is Valakut, 3x mountain, forest, Oracle. On turn 4, I level Kargan 5 times, but don't attack. You play 2 mountains on turn 4. I level twice and attack for 12 on turn 5. You get in for 8. I win on turn 6.
If I'm on the draw:
I can't kill Kargan with Comet Storm, he gets to attack for 14 before I can block, and you get an extra land from Oracle before I can kill it. I think you win this race.
3-3
16 fnord :: "Carefully Considered" Careful Consideration / Keldon Megaliths / Urza's Factory
If I'm on the play, I can get Kargan down before you discard it and ride it to a win. On the draw, it comes down to Valakut vs. Your lands. Valakut wins on turn 12.
You use Megaliths on turns 3 and 4, then start using Urza's factory on turn 5.
1-0
2-0
3-1
4-1
5-0
6-2
7-4
8-6
9-8
You kill me on turn 9. If I try to kill your tokens with valakut and draw, eventually you can just ping me to death with megaliths.
Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
05 WhammWhamme :: "Shocker"
Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 13, and valakut will kill you on turn 12.
6-0
05 WhammWhamme :: "Shocker"
Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 13, and valakut will kill you on turn 12.
6-0
I also somehow forgot that there's nothing against including multiple copies of a card -- Vindicate x2 is pretty much strictly better than Vindicate + Recoil. Of course, it's not like that's a great plan in the first place. C'est la vie.
05 WhammWhamme :: "Shocker"
Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 13, and valakut will kill you on turn 12.
6-0
Au contraire mon frere... Shocker.deck outraces you, because it goldfishes on turn 12 as well. Only just, but it does. 3-3
(and wasting a turn to force me to replay a 1/1 is of course unhelpful)
...that might affect the other Valakut deck's matchup too?
Fixed that. I must have just miscounted.

I've had a lot of things going on this week, so I didn't have any time to work an initial grid or do comments. Will do what I can when I can.
What cheesy often-seen cards do we want to ban for this backbuild?
(Note that the test decks stop basic Standstill / Desecration Elemental concepts.)
Also, everyone is familiar with backbuild, right?
No need to go in depth on it?

B4: 4x Mountain, Level 3 times. Attack with a 10/8. No blocks (M6)
M4: Use Township, Attack for 12 (B5). Dies. If more souls or keep fliers, still don't have enough toughness to block flier.
i have my line as 6 0 6 0 3 X 2 0 6 0 0 6 6 6 0 0 for a total of 40 i think. but, frankly, im probably wrong.
a few interesting ones:
03 Reyemile :: "Tricksy Lil' Gnomes"
Confiscate / Metrognome / Exploration
433.0 6-0 ajani can keep metrognome tapped down (occasionally helixing to keep it in banefire range) until reyemile has to confiscate it, at which point i burn it out and outrace gnomes with lichlord
12 Lithel :: "Field of Dreams"
Energy Field / Shivan Gorge / Thran Foundry
6-0 i went through a lot of figuring for this one, but i realized that energy field does absolutely nothing against me. banefire cant be prevented and lich lord causes loss of life. actually, this wasnt interesting at all...
the valakut decks were a much more interesting matchup before i realized valakut triggers could target creatures.
Historically, it's meant 6-0.

Have fun everyone, and laters.
Shoudl be 3-3
That said, the sheer number of "discard your hand" decks for the past few weeks has been disconcerting.
Didn't the rule used to be, no hand discard till both players had completed TWO turns? Can we go back to that version?

Comet Storm / Kargan Dragonlord / Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
4 | 6 6 0 6 2 6 2 6 0 6 0 6 6 2 2 | 56 |
I'm with Reyemile on the discard rule. Waiting until after turn 2 works better.
The Entries
01 Feyd_Ruin :: "Curse"
Cursed Scroll / Ensnaring Bridge / Ghost Town
Cursed Scroll starts on turn 4, but it can't race Valakut starting on turn 6 with comet storm to the head.
6-0
02 Draco9 :: "Exploring Yawgmoth's Dirty Mind"
Exploration / Corrupt / Phyrexian Processor
By the time you have enough swamps in play to kill the 8/8 dragonlord, I can burn you out with Comet Storm in response.
6-0
03 Reyemile :: "Tricksy Lil' Gnomes"
Confiscate / Metrognome / Exploration
I think you've got this one, but I'm not 100% sure.
0-6
05 WhammWhamme :: "Shocker"
Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 12, and valakut will kill you on turn 12. So you get me on the play, but not on the draw.
3-3
06 tomsloger :: "Lich Lord of Impossible Calculations"
Ajani Vengeant / Banefire / Lich Lord of Unx
I play valakut and nothing else, holding up mana to zap Lich Lord when he hits the field. Valakut kills ajani before he can ultimate, then kills you before you can banefire me.
6-0
07 Antonia :: "Gargageddon"
Dodecapod / Greater Gargadon / Restore Balance
I think I can just win with Kargan by attacking for 8 on turns 4 and 5, then throwing comet storm at you.
6-0
08 Mogg :: "J R R Tokens"
Gavony Township / Lingering Souls / Mayor of Avabruck
This is complicated. Someone else posted an explanation a few posts back that put it at 3-3
09 TANE :: "Chong's Tongs"
Capsize / Forbid / Scalding Tongs
I play mountains. 6-0
10 VikingMetal4L :: "Jenny"
Jenara, Asura of War / Oblivion Ring / Tidehollow Sculler
Sculler + Ring is nice. I don't think I can beat it. Sculler takes Comet Storm. Ring hits Kargan. Once I can kill Sculler with Valakut on turn 6, Jenara is out of range of Comet Storm
0-6
11 faradan :: "A group of Mongeese is called a Troop :teach:"
Blurred Mongoose / Recoil / Vindicate
You need to vindicate Valakut, or it just races Mongoose. You can recoil Kargan after I level him, but I discard Comet Storm. Kargan races Mongoose.
6-0
12 Lithel :: "Field of Dreams"
Energy Field / Shivan Gorge / Thran Foundry
Can't beat that! I was waiting for Energy field to show it's face.
0-6
13 Parsley :: "Hydratics"
Molten Hydra / Mother of Runes / Phyrexian Reclamation
Kargan + comet storm nullify combat on the ground and race your hydra.
6-0
14 Killer Of Giants :: "Isochron"
Beacon of Creation / Isochron Scepter / Raise the Alarm
I can win by attacking for 8 on turns 4 and 5, then casting comet storm for the rest.
6-0
15 AtheistGod :: "Dragonlord"
Kargan Dragonlord / Oracle of Mul Daya / Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
3-3
16 fnord :: "Carefully Considered"
Careful Consideration / Keldon Megaliths / Urza's Factory
If I'm on the play, I can get Kargan down before you discard it and ride it to a win. On the draw, it comes down to Valakut vs. Your lands. Valakut wins on turn 12.
You use Megaliths on turns 3 and 4, then start using Urza's factory on turn 5.
1-0
2-0
3-1
4-1
5-0
6-2
7-4
8-6
9-8
You kill me on turn 9. If I try to kill your tokens with valakut and draw, eventually you can just ping me to death with megaliths.
3-3

Plaguebearer / Shocker / Volrath's Stronghold
You shock me when you're on the play... but Valakut still hits the field. Your 1/1's will kill me on turn 13, and valakut will kill you on turn 12.
6-0

Au contraire mon frere... Shocker.deck outraces you, because it goldfishes on turn 12 as well. Only just, but it does. 3-3
(and wasting a turn to force me to replay a 1/1 is of course unhelpful)
...that might affect the other Valakut deck's matchup too?
Edit: nevermind, forgot your last card stops that plan from mattering.
I also somehow forgot that there's nothing against including multiple copies of a card -- Vindicate x2 is pretty much strictly better than Vindicate + Recoil. Of course, it's not like that's a great plan in the first place. C'est la vie.
Fixed that. I must have just miscounted.
