This edition of 5CB saw you dear players faced with a dire choice: Compete on the usual level, or give yourselves the massive handicap of Extended legality in exchange for a wagonload of POTM points. Not surprisingly, the players who went unrestricted tended to fair better in the round standings, but several players managed to find playable decks in the extended cardpool, usually involving Duress and/or Vindicate as tools to help level the playing field.
Changes for next week:
- This week's restriction (worth 20 POTM points):Only use lands and cards with converted mana cost 2 or greater in your deck. For nonland cards with X in their mana cost, X is treated as zero.
- 5CB #66 is the third week of POTM July. The rules are:
Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Random effects always go in their owner's opponent's favor.
- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.
- Participants earn 3 points if their deck wins a match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
- The moderator may confer any number of Deck Awards. Each Deck Award is worth 10 POTM points unless otherwise specified.
Deck-Building Rules
- You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than 1 card from their hand per turn
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- You may not include a card that is illegal in T1 (Classic). However you may include any number of restricted cards.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 5CB Banned List.

Deadline for next round is Saturday, July 22, at 7:00 PM EST. Challenges to this week's results must be declared before then.
Incidentally, please don't go for this bonus structure too often since it basically means players competing for PotM have to sacrifice all hope of week wins. This is very sucky for me since I'm currently in the lead for both but basically have to sacrifice one or the other.
(This week for example, I effectively won, but can't claim for my win stats.)

Against a lot of these decks I should have at LEAST Draws.
Why ? Give examples !
Decks 4 and 9 kill you before you can play your Angel.
Decks 2 and 3 Duress your Shard before you can cast it, then kill your Angel.
Decks 8 and 11 race you, then bounce your Angel once your life is below zero.
Deck 1 races you, then Putrefies your Angel once your life is below zero.
That leaves deck 5... against which you never have more than one land in play.
Against the remaining decks, you do have at least draws.
Which matches do you think are mis-scored ?

How did you "effectively win" - Kaesh got 6 points more than you, and still had the POTM bonus.
You will notice I didn't get the "I can read" bonus.

POTM standings updated to account for challenges from 64.

@arimnaes. I would really like to see a little comment/feedbackline under each decklist.
That would be very stimulating for all deckbuilders around.
Aight. I can get back to doing that again, now that I have full internet access + time once more.

But a change in the challenge policy would be nice, if the challenge consits of round restrictions. I think the fact the points only get added to PotM originates back from Greebo's first challenges which were more like riddles.
Greebo's Challenges were "Build a deck that does *insert wacky thing here*", and you didn;t have to use that deck in the tihng.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, the wisdom to know the difference, and a ****ing chainsaw.
I am sorry. Due to personal reasons that I'd rather not discuss, and an ever-decreasing amount of time in which to work on this, I have resigned as moderator and Fayul has agreed to take over. I should have given you more warning, and been more transparent with what was going on. Again, I apologize, and I hope that you will all continue to play this fine game.
What if we do an open 5cb? Since no one person seems to have the time.
Everyone submits their deck to me.
I then post, listing the decks, and then all of us can figure out the scores and winner. We'd of course pay attention to our own, and I'm sure a few wouldn't mind figuring up some extra. I definantly dont have the time to do score them all out, but I wouldn't mind gathering them up and posting them.
The scoring is the part that always seems to hold up the contest, so we'd be set minus a couple of "I wasn't here to post yesterday, but here they are" kind of things. We'd also get to skip the extra days/week of when submissions are in but the judge is scoring. We'd jump straight from one submission to the other, with the scoring going on at the same time.
Any dispute is mute since anyone else can chime in with the correct answer, and we usually have a couple wrong anyways, no matter the judge.
Special Formats are decided the week before entry begins, via poll and such.
It'd also create some nice discussion, and we wouldn't have to avoid complicated formats just because itd take the judge a long time to do. We'd ALL have to sift through it

You game?
Personally, I had no problem with the scoring grid for OTTCB. The problem that killed THAT game was that I sucked at making the game interesting. My special formats were weak and/or unbalanced, and the basic premise just wasn't good enough for a sustained format.
See, the trick was simply scoring them each when they came in...
Anywho. The real problem is good special formats. They're hard to do well.
I have recently sent a PM to Fayul, and have gotten this response:

Arimnaes had said that you were taking over 5cb. I was just reminding you, in case you had forgotten. If you haven't forgotten, may I ask when you will make a new thread?
Within the last couple days: I'm slowly just getting over running RTK mafia, that was a big project, but 5CB should probably be forthcoming soon.
So he has not forgotten, and 5CB should hopefully be up and running soon enough. We'll just have to be patient.
