Wow. Okay, so, short of apologizing for the delay, all I can say is that this is literally the first time I have had internet access since my last post.
So this round saw the restriction of "All cards from different sets." Said restriction was worth 15 POTM points to those who chose to follow it. All but two players did - and let's face it: The only really significant impact the restriction entailed was preventing the use of multiple Lotus manabases. A number of players seized on this as the perfect opportunity to use Duress against players' solitary Loti, which proved a very profitable metagame choice. And now, what you've all been waiting for (for some time, too)...
1 Shadowlord - Oldhabbits.dec
Black Lotus, Watery Grave, Duress, Daze, Eater of Days
2 WhammWhamme - Sampling
Mishra's Workshop, Gods’ Eye, Gate to the Reikai, Smokestack, Crucible of Worlds, Damping Matrix
3 Fayul- They called him John the Fisherman
Foil, Hallowed Fountain, Nether Spirit, Black Lotus, Nikko-Onna
4 Pingele_Pats - Trying to Break the Metagame, Part I
Black Lotus, City of Traitors, Soldevi Digger, Aura of Silence, Kodama of the North Tree
5 BweeBwee - Full Estonian Breakfast
Nezumi Shortfang, Duress, Mox Jet, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity
Changes for next week:
- This week's restriction (worth 25 POTM points):Make your deck Extended legal. Extended encompasses all expert-level expansions from Invasion forward, as well as 7th, 8th, and 9th editions. Coldsnap is not legal yet. You may not use any cards on the Extended Banned List.
- 5CB #65 is the second week of POTM July. The rules are:
Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Random effects always go in their owner's opponent's favor.
- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.
- Participants earn 3 points if their deck wins a match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
- The moderator may confer any number of Deck Awards. Each Deck Award is worth 10 POTM points unless otherwise specified.
Deck-Building Rules
- You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than 1 card from their hand per turn
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- You may not include a card that is illegal in T1 (Classic). However you may include any number of restricted cards.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 5CB Banned List.
The Banned List
Ghost Quarter
Strip Mine
Wasteland
Meddling Mage
Force of Will
Trinisphere
Mycosynth Lattice
Anurid Scavenger
Form of the Dragon
Unmask
Deadline for next round has been extended (due to unforseen delays for this round on my part) until Sunday, July 16, at 7:00 PM EST. Challenges to this week's results must be declared before then.
Although I'm going to have a quick shot at changing that...
8 bateleur - Dark Sleeper
Underground Sea, Mishra's Factory, Duress, Nezumi Shortfang, Chain of Vapor
vs
4 Pingele_Pats - Trying to Break the Metagame, Part I
Black Lotus, City of Traitors, Soldevi Digger, Aura of Silence, Kodama of the North Tree
Currently: 0-6
I make it: 4-1
When I play first, I Duress his Lotus. He then drops Digger. I play Shortfang. On his turn he activates Digger. I attack for 4. He then drops Kodama. On my turn I cannot safely attack, but I activate Shortfang to flip it. He loses 3 life on his upkeep. Kodama must attack each turn. He needs to hit me four times to kill me, but I'm dealing 8 damage on the first turn of this (3 upkeep damage, 3 Shortfang beats, 2 Factory beats), then 7, then 6 so I win the race.
When he plays first, he drops Kodama on turn 1 and I Duress his Digger. Shortfang comes down on my turn 2 and flips on my turn 3. He has dealt a total of 18 by my turn 4, but from that point I can double-block for the draw.
If he instead drops the Digger (and Lotus) first I bounce his Digger on my turn 1. He could drop it a second time immediately, but if he does I drop Shortfang on my turn 2. After that, the situation roughly mirrors the case where I play first and I will win the resulting damage race as follows: Flip Shortfang to deal 3. He does 6 to me. Attack back for 5 plus 2 more Shortfang damage (total 10 so far). He does another 6 (total 12). Attack back for 5, plus 1 (total 16). He attacks for 6 taking me to 2. I attack for the win. (So he prefers to play it the other way and take the draw.)

Damn, did badly, here are a couple corrections for now:

vs
3 Fayul- They called him John the Fisherman
Foil, Hallowed Fountain, Nether Spirit, Black Lotus, Nikko-Onna
Listed: 0-6 Corrected:6-0
On the play, I duress, he has to counter or else I take foil, so he counters, and gests nether spirit out. Then he plays nikko onna and in response to the destroy leyline trigger, I bounce it. He attacks for two, and then i play the shortfang, he attacks for two again (16), i activate shrotfang to make him discard nikko, it flips, he takes three, (17, 16), he attacks for two (17, 14), i attack for three (14, 14), he takes 3, (11,14). He can either attack and continue losing the race, or leave the spirit back to block... and still lose the race.
On the draw, he plays nikko on leyline, I play duress, he counters. He attacks for 4 (20,16), i play shortfang, he attacks for 4 (20,12), I activate and flip shortfang, he takes three (17, 12), attacks for 4 (17, 8), i leave stabwhiskers back to block, if he attacks, his creature dies, if he doesn't he eventually loses to stabwhiskers upkeep trigger.

On the play, i duress chain of vapor, he plays a land, i play shortfang, he plays factory and then plays shortfang, i bounce shortfang, attack for one. If he doesn't play shortfang and attacks with mishra's factory, or leaves it back to block, I use my shortfang's discard ability (he discards duress the first time) and then eventually get into a position where i have stabwhiskers and he's taking three a turn, and if he plays his shortfang, i bounce it, and if he doesn't, i can block the factory and just not attack.
On the draw, he screws me over with duress on mox (and chain on leyline).

I don't know what happens here, but what if I don't counter the duress? Does that change the damage race at all?

In order to duress, you have to first play Mox Jet, which gets Foiled. Foil stays in hand until you try to play the Jet, giving the game to Nikko beats.

The problem is that you can't bounce Shortfang until he becomes a legend - and as soon as he becomes a legend both of the Shortfangs die instantly. Thus the game boils down to him having a Factory with no other threats on the board.

Nruh, my bad, thought he was playing swamp, but, yeah, I foil the Jet.

OK, so that's 3-3 then since it's only of significant use to him when he plays first. When he plays second the lack of Aura in hand increases the damage he takes from Shortfang.
Me: Duress Lotus
Him: Digger
Me: Shortfang
Him: Dig Lotus
Me: Attack for 4
Him: Kodama
Me: Flip Shortfang (Aura to Graveyard) - he takes 3 on his upkeep.
Him: Deals 6. Dig Aura/Lotus.
Me: Attack for 5, he drops to 6 life on his upkeep.
Him: Deals another 6. Dig again and play Aura. I bounce the Aura on his EOT.
Me: Attack FTW.

I just wanted to make sure and prove my deck impacts the 5CB metagame...
No doubt you've achieved that... although I'm still skeptical about your result against Shadowlord.
P Land + Lotus + Aura --> destroy eater
*Can play around Daze at any time*
That's not quite true though, is it ? You can play around Daze on your Aura, meaning that you will always kill Eater. Unfortunately you have no way to play around Daze on your Kodama.
So I think that's 4-1 to you ?
