I profusely apologize for the delay in finishing this round. While there were several reasons, not the least of which was Humility and friends, it's ultimately my responsibility to work far enough ahead to handle any added delays from rules issues. I don't intend to let such a delay occur again, and fortunately this one won't interfere with our schedule as we head into the last week of the POTM race for June.
Okay, on to business. As you can no doubt fathom from my incessant ranting, Humility and Opalescence were both widely played this round. We saw a number of variants of Opalescence + 4 cool enchantments, with some players adding Dovescape to the mix to try to trip up people playing normal decks. Surprisingly, only one competitor decided to use a Serenity deck, and they were rewarded with third place.
1 Kaesh - Just a Hunting Pack Deck
Dream Halls, Timetwister, Timetwister, Voidslime, Hunting Pack
2 ShadowLord - Once more with feeling…dec
Sneak Attack, Serra Avatar, Goblin Bombardment, Steam Vents, Privileged Position
3 Halinn - I dislike creatures
Humility, Night of Souls' Betrayal, Aura of Silence, Aura of Silence, Sulfuric Vortex
4 SenorClown - Don't Play Seal Subversion, Rule of Law, Bottomless Pit, Bottomless Pit, Seal of Cleansing
(DISQUALIFIED)
Announcements: Due to transitional delays, the POTM race for June will consist of only three weeks. Make every point count!
Changes for next week:
- Next week will use the special format "Control Player's Nightmare." In this format, all rules of standard 5CB remain the same, but players begin with only 7 life. As a reminder, your deck cannot be able to win before your opponent's first main phase.
- Our new subscription policy is that anyone who participates in one round will be notified when 24 hours remain in the next if they have not yet submitted a deck. So, anyone who participates will be "subscribed" for at least a week.
- 5CB #63 is the third and final week of POTM June. The rules are:
Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Random effects always go in their owner's opponent's favor.
- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.
- Participants earn 3 points if their deck wins a match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
- The moderator may confer any number of Deck Awards. Each Deck Award is worth 10 POTM points unless otherwise specified.
Deck-Building Rules
- You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to discard more than 1 card per turn
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- You may not include a card that is illegal in T1 (Classic). However you may include any number of restricted cards.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 5CB Banned List.
The Banned List
Ghost Quarter
Strip Mine
Wasteland
Meddling Mage
Force of Will
Trinisphere
Mycosynth Lattice
Anurid Scavenger
Form of the Dragon
Unmask
Deadline for next round is Thursday, June 29, at 7:00 PM EST. Challenges to this week's results must be declared before then.
Ughh, finding challenges to this round is a major headache, I officially sympathize with you, arimnaes, I know I want to say something about my match vs the endless whisper/planar collapse deck, but it makes my head hurt, so maybe I'll find something up with that later...
Hmm, well thank you for calculating all this, just skimmed over it, and it looks like I may have some corrections, but I'll have to go back over and doublecheck.
One thing that stuck out in my mind though is SenorClown's entry:
Quote from arimnaes »
4 SenorClown - Don't Play Seal
Subversion, Rule of Law, Bottomless Pit, Bottomless Pit, Seal of Cleansing
I believe that this deck should actually be illegal due to the double discard rule:
Quote from arimnaes »
- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to discard more than 1 card per turn
I had completely overlooked that, due to the fact that most players were dumping their hands into play before the game even began. Plus you WoD skirting the line with his little Parallax Nexus gambit...
Errrrhem, it appears we have a DQ on SenorClown. Unless I've overlooked something?
I should also take this opportunity to point out, in case people didn't realize, that the Auras of Silence in halinn's deck don't work, because they're on the no-leyline list.
Edit: Okay, the standings have been adjusted. zu_Faul is now the sole winner of the round, and he is tied with BweeBwee for POTM.
Um I think my deck's combo wasn't properly understood.
7 MrCowFart - Houdini's Masterpiece
Sulfuric Vortex, Transcendence, Dovescape, Privileged Position, Seal of Cleansing
Sulfuric Vortex
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, Sulfuric Vortex deals 2 damage to that player.
If a player would gain life, that player gains no life instead.
+
Transcendence
You don't lose the game for having 0 or less life.
When you have 20 or more life, you lose the game.
Whenever you lose life, you gain 2 life for each 1 life you lost. (Damage dealt to you causes you to lose life.)
Basically this means I can't lose as long as this stays in play and it deals 2 damage to the opponent every turn.
1 Kaesh - Just a Hunting Pack Deck
Dream Halls, Timetwister, Timetwister, Voidslime, Hunting Pack
The only way for this deck to stop my deck is to try to stifle my sulfuric vortex. Unfortunatly if they ever try to stifle my vortex i will just blow up their dream halls in response (timetwister is a sorcery for reference).
3-3 should be 6-0
2 ShadowLord - Once more with feeling…dec
Sneak Attack, Serra Avatar, Goblin Bombardment, Steam Vents, Privileged Position
There is no way this can beat me.
3-3 should be 6-0
Um I think my deck's combo wasn't properly understood.
Actually looking at this deck now, I don't see how you can ever win. In order for you to set up your win condition, you need put everything down at the start of the game, however doing so would cause you to lose the game immediately on playing, as transcendence kills you due to 'When you have 20 or more life, you lose the game.' o_O
Edit: I mean win with that combo obvisously, as it's possible to win with just the other 4 cards. (I think you still beat my deck with those 4 cards, I'd have to check)
Correct. That combo normally runs off a Shockland or Painland and Eureka (or similar) to knock the caster below 20 initially.
And whilst I'm here, I have an impressive 21 points worth of corrections ! (Or, y'know, I might be horribly confused about how Humility works... that's also possible !)
12 bateleur - Worst of Both Worlds
Humility, Opalescence, Dovescape, Peace and Quiet, Black Lotus
2 ShadowLord - Once more with feeling…dec
Sneak Attack, Serra Avatar, Goblin Bombardment, Steam Vents, Privileged Position
Listed: 2-2
I make it: 6-0
I destroy PP and Sneak attack, then attack repeatedly with Dovescape. (PP doesn't do much under Humility.)
3 Halinn - I dislike creatures
Humility, Night of Souls' Betrayal, Aura of Silence, Aura of Silence, Sulfuric Vortex
As already remarked, the two AoS cannot start in play. I therefore win easily. As a side note, I would win anyway since a 7/7 and a 4/4 beat three 3/3s (the board as it would be after I destroyed his two 4/4s.
If he plays first he can drop either Rack/Tongs or Bridge, not both. Then I destroy Flux and Humility so he doesn't get to drop anything else. My 7/7 then wins the race. Consequently he must drop Bridge on the play, leading to a draw.
Listed: 3-3
I make it: 4-1
10 WhammWhamme - All your enchant are belong to me
Opalescence, Planar Collapse, Endless Whispers, Opalescence, City of Shadows
He needs to use two blockers to kill Dovescape. However, I can kill two of his dudes at instant speed, so he needs to use all four blockers to guarantee killing Dovescape. When he does this I am then able to kill everything except Planar Collapse. This is a 2/2 and therefore cannot race my Humility.
I assume this was just a typo ? I have any number of ways of winning this, the simplest of which is just to blow away his two Enchantments then beat down.
Listed: 0-6
I make it: 6-0
16 Farik - Dovescape Seems Pretty Good…
Dovescape, Blood Moon, Night of Souls' Betrayal, Privileged Position, Opalescence
If I make Leyline choices second I can choose not to put my Opalescence into play (without his I can simply destroy his two big creatures then beat down). His Opalescence is therefore not a creature, so I can... erm... destroy his two big creatures and beat down !

Dream Halls, Timetwister, Timetwister, Voidslime, Hunting Pack
vs
9 zu_Faul - Recycling Ideas
Aura Flux, Mishra's Workshop, The Rack, Scalding Tongs, Ensnaring Bridge
Kaesh can use his voidslime to counter the aura flux trigger. He can then proceed to go off and create a bazzilion tokens. voidslim can take care of ensnaring bridge
If I go first I'll never play Aura Flux and drop the Tongs/Rack.
But if you do that I'll never drop Humility and you're stuffed as Dovescape counters all your spells.
...are we back to 3-3 ?

@MrCowFart: Your combo only works when you're on the play. When you're on the play, Transcendence will immediately trigger as it sees you have 20 life. However, the earliest time the trigger can go on the stack is your first upkeep, which is also when Sulfuric Vortex wants to be stacked. As you control both effects, you can stack the Vortex on top of the Transcendence, go down to 18, and then when Transcendence resolves you won't lose the game because its condition is no longer satisfied.
Needless to say, it doesn't work on the draw. All the games you were on the draw, I had you just drop the Vortex (or whatever gave you the best chance of getting the win, or the draw.)
Quote from bateleur »

Ah, and that's the eternal question...
I will look into any other corrections today, and I'll try to respond and update every evening until next Thursday.
Edit: Okay, bateleur, before I start rerunning the matches you brought up, I want to make sure we're on the same page about how Humility and Opalescence interact. I checked the CompRules on this, and the conclusion I came to was that all enchantments in play (save Opalescence) become 1/1's with no abilities. Because Opalescence's characteristic setting effect (of making them have P/T equal to their CMC) is applied, then overwritten by Humility's P/T setting effect.
Oh, right. That deck's somewhat rubbish then. Oops !

Somehow my priveledged position got changed to a parallex wave which doesn't even work with leylines! How did this happen? (read: Since when you sent me back my register list it doesn't have a deck list I don't know if this was your err or mine, but I know that this deck was not my intention since I've played this format before)
Unless the leylines format changed or soemthing because last time I checked enchantments don't come into play! (hopefully someone else didn't already state this)

Well, as far as I know I got everyone's decklist directly from Copy/Pasting it from their PM. Do you still have the original PM you sent me?
I'll take another look at the bateleur/zu_Faul matchup, and get those corrections up ASAP.
It seems like CB's are a pretty wide topic, and we don't really get a chance to talk much about them other than in these rounds threads, and even then, the discussion is pretty limited to what happened in that particular round. I was just wondering if anyone else had ever thought of maybe having some sort of thread (maybe like a clan, I dunno) where CB's in general could just be discussed. Just a passing thought.

See the super thing that Greebo did was when he said he had registered your deck, he sent the deck back so that you knew that he registered the right deck. Anyway its okay, it was about time I started contributed to salvation again in a real magic sense.

Yeah, I can do that from now on.
Okay, this is truly bizarre, but I'm now getting the zu_Faul/bateleur matchup to be 6-0 zu_Faul. We're agreed that zu_Faul wins when bateleur's on the play, yes? Well, here's what I'm getting for zu_Faul on the play:
zu_Faul places Aura Flux.
bateleur places Humility, Opalescence, and Dovescape. (He has to, otherwise AF wrecks his board.)
zu_Faul plays Mishra's Workshop and taps it to play The Rack and Scalding Tongs.
bateleur takes 1 damage from The Rack (down to 19), plays Black Lotus, sacrifices it for WWW to play Peace and Quiet destroying Aura Flux and Humility. He takes a mana burn (down to 18) and swings for 6.
From here on out, it's a race:
(14, 18) bateleur is scalded
- zu_Faul plays Ensnaring Bridge, it's countered but he gets 3 1/1's with flying. -
(14, 15) bateleur is racked for 3
(8, 15) bateleur swings with Dovescape
(8, 14) bateleur is scalded
(8, 11) zu_Faul swings with 3 1/1's
(8, 8) bateleur is racked for 3)
(2, 8) bateleur swings with Dovescape
(2, 7) bateleur is scalded
(2, 5) zu_Faul swings with 2 1/1's
(2, 2) bateleur is racked for 3
(2, 1) bateleur is scalded
(2, -1) zu_Faul swings ftw with dove tokens
Have I missed something? Is there a way bateleur can force a draw when zu_Faul's on the play?
As a reminder to all entrants: Deadline is tomorrow evening, at 7:00 PM EST. PM's are going out to people who participated this round but haven't submitted a deck for #63 yet.
I'm changing the bateleur/zu_Faul matchup to 6-0 zu_Faul unless I hear otherwise.
So he leylines in his Flux... I can remove it as it is a creature, and remove the Bridge in his hand from the game, or I can just remove amost of my enchantments using the two Waves, and therefore skip over the upkeep cost...
Well, if you're on the play, you can't remove the flux until you have priority, which you won't get until your first upkeep, by which time it will be too late as the flux will have triggered on all your enchantments. However, you are correct that you could use one Parallax Wave to remove the other, and the nexus, and the position, and finally the Opalescence, then that Parallax wave will die to Aura flux, and your other enchantments will come back into play and survive. Then you can nexus away zu_Faul's hand and remove the AF from the game, and win by swinging on your next two turns.
New result: 3-3
Which means that you're once again tied for first with zu_Faul...
This evening. Two days after deadline is probably going to be the normal rate for me. That way, each game week will last approximately a real week, + or - a day.
No. Although that may be because several people who entered the past two rounds didn't enter this one after seeing they were probably out of the running for POTM.

Due to transitional delays, the POTM race for June will consist of only three weeks. Make every point count!
Changes for next week:
- Next week will use the special format "Control Player's Nightmare." In this format, all rules of standard 5CB remain the same, but players begin with only 7 life. As a reminder, your deck cannot be able to win before your opponent's first main phase.

- 5CB #63 is the third and final week of POTM June. The rules are:
Basic Rules

- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.

- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.

Deadline for next round is Thursday, June 29, at 7:00 PM EST. Challenges to this week's results must be declared before then.
Incidentally, I should've used Aura flux...
One thing that stuck out in my mind though is SenorClown's entry:
I believe that this deck should actually be illegal due to the double discard rule:
3-3 should be 6-0
11 Worthley - Untitled
Disenchant, Black Lotus, Plains, Mishra's Factory, Aura Thief
There is no way this can beat me, since dovescape stops them in their track and they have no way to kill aura theif.
3-3 should be 6-0
12 bateleur - Worst of Both Worlds
Humility, Opalescence, Dovescape, Peace and Quiet, Black Lotus
Efven if they kill two of my enchantments i'm still left with 3 1/1 creatures to their 2 (opalescence doesn't affect itself)
2-2 should be 6-0
13 Chimpanzee - Saprolings of Death
Seal of Cleansing, Dovescape, Privileged Position, Death Pit Offering, Honden of Life's Web
There is no way this can beat me.
3-3 should be 6-0
16 Farik - Dovescape Seems Pretty Good…
Dovescape, Blood Moon, Night of Souls' Betrayal, Privileged Position, Opalescence
4-1 should be 6-0
44 + 18 = 62 points
Actually looking at this deck now, I don't see how you can ever win. In order for you to set up your win condition, you need put everything down at the start of the game, however doing so would cause you to lose the game immediately on playing, as transcendence kills you due to 'When you have 20 or more life, you lose the game.' o_O
Edit: I mean win with that combo obvisously, as it's possible to win with just the other 4 cards. (I think you still beat my deck with those 4 cards, I'd have to check)
Listed: 2-2
I make it: 6-0
I destroy PP and Sneak attack, then attack repeatedly with Dovescape. (PP doesn't do much under Humility.)
As already remarked, the two AoS cannot start in play. I therefore win easily. As a side note, I would win anyway since a 7/7 and a 4/4 beat three 3/3s (the board as it would be after I destroyed his two 4/4s.
Listed: 2-2
I make it: 6-0
If he plays first he can drop either Rack/Tongs or Bridge, not both. Then I destroy Flux and Humility so he doesn't get to drop anything else. My 7/7 then wins the race. Consequently he must drop Bridge on the play, leading to a draw.
Listed: 3-3
I make it: 4-1
He needs to use two blockers to kill Dovescape. However, I can kill two of his dudes at instant speed, so he needs to use all four blockers to guarantee killing Dovescape. When he does this I am then able to kill everything except Planar Collapse. This is a 2/2 and therefore cannot race my Humility.
Listed: 2-2
I make it: 6-0
I assume this was just a typo ? I have any number of ways of winning this, the simplest of which is just to blow away his two Enchantments then beat down.
Listed: 0-6
I make it: 6-0
If I make Leyline choices second I can choose not to put my Opalescence into play (without his I can simply destroy his two big creatures then beat down). His Opalescence is therefore not a creature, so I can... erm... destroy his two big creatures and beat down !
Listed: 2-2
I make it: 4-1

In other assorted corrections though:
1 Kaesh - Just a Hunting Pack Deck
Dream Halls, Timetwister, Timetwister, Voidslime, Hunting Pack
vs
9 zu_Faul - Recycling Ideas
Aura Flux, Mishra's Workshop, The Rack, Scalding Tongs, Ensnaring Bridge
Kaesh can use his voidslime to counter the aura flux trigger. He can then proceed to go off and create a bazzilion tokens. voidslim can take care of ensnaring bridge
reported 0-6, should be 6-0
I concur !
But if you do that I'll never drop Humility and you're stuffed as Dovescape counters all your spells.
...are we back to 3-3 ?

Needless to say, it doesn't work on the draw. All the games you were on the draw, I had you just drop the Vortex (or whatever gave you the best chance of getting the win, or the draw.)

Unless the leylines format changed or soemthing because last time I checked enchantments don't come into play! (hopefully someone else didn't already state this)
Or more accurately: Sorry, we're so stupid.
Yes, it's very sad.

I'll take another look at the bateleur/zu_Faul matchup, and get those corrections up ASAP.
I'm changing the bateleur/zu_Faul matchup to 6-0 zu_Faul unless I hear otherwise.
So he leylines in his Flux... I can remove it as it is a creature, and remove the Bridge in his hand from the game, or I can just remove amost of my enchantments using the two Waves, and therefore skip over the upkeep cost...
New result: 3-3
Which means that you're once again tied for first with zu_Faul...
No. Although that may be because several people who entered the past two rounds didn't enter this one after seeing they were probably out of the running for POTM.
