1. knobbodi - Wild Karmacation Wild Evocation / Karma / Swamp / Fungal Reaches / Rest for the Weary I figured no one would be running swamps, and I was right. Karma meant I couldn't beat anyone, and in order to cast a spell to kill Desecration Elemental I'd have to kill myself with karma. I spent way too much time building this instead of studying, and it shows.
7. Error1 - karma is a lich Wild Evocation / Karma / Molten Slagheap / City of Brass / REMOVED The only real difference between our decks was the fact that my evocation kills me, so I won against the desecration elemental decks instead of drawing. Solid finish though!
8. Heart of Draco - Forge of Desecration Horizon Canopy / Fungal Reaches / Wild Evocation / Darksteel Forge / Desecration Elemental Desecration Elemental is a powerful strategy, especially alongside damaging yourself down to 4. You weren't as slow as the other desecration elemental deck, but it didn't end up mattering. Great finish!

I'm sure I calculated some of these wrong because backbuild is kinda confusing, but it looks like I'm the winner for this round! I'll wait a couple of days, but I don't think anyone's beating Antonia for player of the month. So Antonia, think of a special format that we'll run the week after next! If anyone has any ideas they've been tossing around, feel free to share them as well.
I also added Smallpox to the banned list. This next round is going to be Juggernaut week! Everyone starts with 50 life. Decks are going to be due by sunday the 18th, so as to sync us up with the previous schedule.
Modern 5CB is a forum game with the following rules:
-A deck consists of 5 cards that you submit to the moderator (me). Your deck must include a way to win, plus the mana to cast whatever cards are included in your deck. All 5 cards start in your opening hand, and you do not lose the game for being unable to draw a card from your deck.
-Matches are calculated by the moderator, assuming perfect information and optimal play. Matches consist of 2 games, one on the play and one on the draw. Each win is worth 3 points, and each draw is worth 1 point. However, a match that results in a win on the play and a loss on the draw is only worth 2 points, even though it is recorded in the table as being worth 3.
-The cardpool is limited to cards that have been printed since 8th edition and mirrodin (counting both of those), i.e. anything printed in the new card frame (but also including timeshifted cards, and not including cards printed in duel decks or the from the vault series).
-No one may submit a deck that can force their opponent to move a card in their hand to a different zone before that player's first turn. That is, no turn 1 discard. Also, no one can submit a deck that can win on its first turn.
-The banned list is:
Ghost Quarter
Meddling Mage
Vampire Hexmage
Chancellor of the Annex
Laboratory Maniac
Blazing Shoal
Smallpox
4. Feyd_Ruin - The War Zone
Keldon Megaliths / Contested War Zone / Contested War Zone / Contested War Zone / Shimmering Grotto
Your deck was pretty quick, which didn't work out so well for you. If there had been more creature decks you would have done a lot better, but it just didn't work out this week I guess.
5. WhammWhamme - Forbidden Faery
Nightshade Stinger / Forbidden Orchard / Forbidden Orchard / Forbidden Orchard / Swell of Courage
Killing your opponent at the last possible second usually works well in backbuild, but double karma and double desecration elemental is where your points went.
...I lose to "Contested War Zone, ACTIVATE Contested War Zone."
6. Antonia - Blood Loss
Vigean Hydropon / Blessing of Leeches / Near-Death Experience / Dreadship Reef / Saltcrusted Steppe
Near-Death Experience is a very (not) powerful win condition, but double karma and double desecration elemental meant you lost a decent amount of the time.
...if I go for the win, Near-Death Experience and nothing else wins the race. So draw.
TANE, you're right, I'm not sure how I missed that. Luckily, nefarious lich never saw play in any of his matches so I'll just leave him at 4CB
WhammWhamme, you're right about contested war zone, I forgot about that. But against Antonia, your last attack is when she's at 2 and you're at 1, so you win. Or rather, lose.
Edit: Heart of Draco draws with me; if I go for the win, he can resolve Desecration Elemental with the token I donate being in play and thus lose nothing.
WhammWhamme, because of wild evocation, I think that your match with Heart of Draco is unchanged. When he first casts wild evocation, you cast swell of courage during your upkeep, then he casts desecration elemental during his upkeep, and then you cast stinger during your upkeep, without having to use forbidden orchard.
Plains / Swamp / Forest / Island / Mountain was the test deck.
No, because he doesn't have to cast Wild Evocation unless I cast Nightshade Stinger, which gives him a spare token to sacrifice. Which was the point of running Forbidden Orchard.
Blackjack: A player may not submit a deck that can – against any deck – win the game before an opponent's 20th turn. (Note: This isn't backbuild.)
Hyper Convoke: Each player starts the game with an emblem that has "Tap an untapped permanent you control: Add that permanent's mana cost to your mana pool. Each permanent can only be tapped this way once per turn. (Mana cost includes color.)"
Winter Wonderland:
Players may not include non-snowcovered lands in their decks. Snow-covered lands produce an additional (1) when tapped for mana. Creatures named Goblin Snowman get +5/+5.
Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
Wild Evocation / Karma / Swamp / Fungal Reaches / Rest for the Weary
I figured no one would be running swamps, and I was right. Karma meant I couldn't beat anyone, and in order to cast a spell to kill Desecration Elemental I'd have to kill myself with karma. I spent way too much time building this instead of studying, and it shows.
2. Reyemile - Hibernating Desecration
Desecration Elemental / Hibernation's End / See Beyond / Calciform Pools / Horizon Canopy
This is definitely the best desecration elemental deck. You're super slow, and getting yourself to 2 doesn't hurt either. Nice finish!
3. Draco9 - Screw you, Desecration Elemental!
Orzhova, Church of Deals / Forbidden Orchard / Fungal Reaches / Wooded Bastion / Graven Cairns
Funny enough, your deck was actually too fast to beat either of the desecration elemental decks. Your speed is pretty much the reason you didn't beat most people.

So, antonia, do you know what your special format is going to be, since you're the clear winner for player of the month?
