This was a good round. Many cards saw play for the first time. Many strategies were explored, and the decks were considerably balanced – only a quarter of the decks managed to score more than 3 points on average.
04 Reyemile – Chancellor of the Annex / Jwar Isle Refuge / Leyline of Sanctity / Shining Shoal / Sleeper Agent Shoal plus Chancellor was my favorite combo of the round, slightly ahead of Foil plus Spirit. Shoal covers enough bases that the redundant Leyline could have been dropped for a redundant threat, to convert some draws into wins.
07 Draco9 – Blackmail / Diamond Valley / Perilous Myr / Shield Sphere / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth The Shield Sphere combo was quite good, and discard in general was strong this round. Myr would have been better as a card that could do more damage over time – 1/1's can be blocked by Mycon or survived by Sheltered Valley.
11 Shogun17 – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Energy Field / Necrogen Mists / The Rack I didn't compare Anvil to Mists when scoring, but my intuition is that the gain in resilience by playing two cards off of one Lotus (or Shop) would have outweighed the gain in speed provided by Mists.
15 ced395 – Augur of Skulls / Inquisition of Kozilek / Sheltered Valley / Swamp / The Rack The enormous success of this deck surprised me. That said, this deck does combine all the right aspects of being proactive while balancing threats and disruption and even having game against Blood Moon.
18 VikingMetal4L – Avatar of Hope / Copper Tablet / Kabira Crossroads / Nezumi Shortfang / Scrubland Given the one-time popularity of one-mana-control decks, the two-mana archetype is surprisingly rare. For a deck with no first-turn spells, the deck also performed surprisingly well. I'm not sure whether Tablet or Tongs would have been better. Tablet wins more quickly, and through Leyline, but the damage to yourself cost you against Draco9.
19 Personman – Black Lotus / Cystbearer / Foil / Inquisition of Kozilek / Underground Sea Cystbearer lost races to everything, which meant you relied heavily on your disruption. Unfortunately, you could only play one piece of disruption if you wanted to win.
After looking at the submissions a while, the best deck I could think of was Fetid Heath / Gemstone Caverns / Orim's Chant / Plains / Sleeper Agent. That loses to 4,5, and 6, and draws with 19, but wins otherwise. Can anyone else do better?
Next round will be another special round: Free Lotus.
Free Lotus
At the beginning of each player's first main phase, that player adds 3 mana of any one color to his or her mana pool.
(This happens each and every turn.)
Five Card Blind (5CB) is a weekly Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit five-card decks which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1. Game Rules
1.1. Except for the changes described in these rules, games follow the rules of Magic.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly five cards, which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
1.5. Each player plays two games (one match) against each other player.
1.5a. Each player is the starting player once per match.
1.5b. If no player can win, the game is a draw.
1.5c. Games are played with perfect information.
1.5d. Games are played optimally; players attempt to win, draw, or extend the game – in that order.
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the 5CB moderator.
2.1a. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent deck is counted.
2.1b. An illegal deck is not counted. The removal of an illegal deck does not affect deck distribution (see Rule 2.4).
2.1c. The moderator determines the result of each match. Players may challenge results, but not after the results of the first round belonging to a new month have been posted (see Rule 2.5a).
2.1d. A player may name his or her deck. If a player does not, the moderator may name it.
2.2. Decks are subject to some restrictions.
2.2a. A player may not submit a deck that can – against any deck – win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn.
2.2b. A player may not submit a deck that can't win both games of a match against at least one deck satisfying 2.2a and 2.2c.
2.2c. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1), with the exception of the following banned cards:
2.2d. A deck may include any number of any card that will become legal in Vintage upon release of a set that has been revealed fully and officially since the start of the round.
2.3. Points determine tournament standings.
2.3a. Players are ranked – first to last – in order of decreasing number of points.
2.3b. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. However, a player earns only 2 points for a split match (one win, one loss).
2.3c. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. Match results reflect the combined result of both games played in a match; 3 is a game win, 1 a drawn game, and 0 a game loss. 2 or S may be used instead of 3 to denote a split match. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
2.4. In rounds of twenty or more players, the moderator may choose to divide players randomly into equally-sized heats of n players, where n is the number of players divided by ten (rounded down).
For example, twenty-five players are divided into heats of twelve and thirteen.
2.4a. Except in the finals, a player only plays against players in his heat.
2.4b. The top four players of each heat advance to the finals, where they play again (with the same decks).
2.4c. Tiebreakers for advancement to the finals are as follows: number of matches in which a player wins both games, number of game wins, points scored against higher-scoring decks. If a tie is unresolved, the tied decks advance.
2.5. The player with the most POTM points over the course of a month is the Player of the Month.
2.5a. A month includes all rounds for which decks are due during that month.
2.5b. Each round, each player receives POTM points equal to their average match result for that round, rounded down to 1 decimal place. For example, a player scoring 6-6-6-6-X-0-0-0 in a round with 8 decks receives 3.4 points (24/7).
Thank you to Mogg for hosting this round, calculating the results, and everything else.
Next week is Free Lotus week, due Saturday night, as usual.
I apologize for the delay on posting this weeks; I didn't get in until late last night.
I'll post my checksum for next week tonight, as I haven't made a deck yet.

I think the match specifically mentioned in my results (VM4L (18) vs Draco9 (07)) should be 4-1 in my favor rather than 2-2.
I agree that we draw when I play second as he can Blackmail my Avatar of Hope and gain 6 life (blanking my Copper Tablet) before I can cast anything.
But on when I'm the play (I obviously lead with Kabira Crossroads), he has a couple of options, none of them good.
(1) Draco9 can go turn 1 Urborg, Blackmail (I reveal my three spells), in which case he must take Copper Tablet or lose on his next upkeep. I cast both my creatures and crush him.
(2) Draco9 goes turn 1 Diamond Valley, Shield Sphere, gain 6 life (blanking my Tablet). I untap and play Avatar of Hope. Draco9 plays turn 2 Urborg, and can either:
(2a) play Perilous Myr, in which case I cast Shortfang to block, and crush him with Avatar.
(2b) play Blackmail, taking Nezumi Shortfang. My turn 3, I attack him down to 3, so his turn 3 Perilous Myr is too late.
I checked all my results, and I think some of them are wrong. Here are my corrections:
17 psly4mne – Black Lotus / Chancellor of the Annex / Pardic Dragon / Pyrostatic Pillar / Sheltered Valley
vs ...
09 XScorpion – Ajani Goldmane / Black Lotus / Chancellor of the Annex / Orim's Chant / Remote Farm
me on the play: I go valley-lotus-go. Then he can only go farm-go. Then i play my stuff and he can never drop the lotus.
xs on the play: He goes farm-go. I go valley-lotus-go. He drops ajani (3 life, 5 loyalty). I suspend dragon (2 life, 2 counters) and play pillar. He activates ajani (5 life, 6 loyalty). My turn (3 life, 1 counter). His turn. if he makes a token, I win in 2 turns (since his token shrinks when he takes damage). If he gains life, he has to keep gaining life and I kill him easily.
1-4 -> 6-0
10 FuriouslySleepingIdea – Daze / Foil / Nether Spirit / Tropical Island / Utopia Mycon
If I do nothing and he tries to win, chancellor will counter his mycon, and then spirit will never be the only creature in his graveyard. If I cast lotus turn 1, he can kill me with spirit before I win. If I wait, daze+foil can counter my lotus. 0-6 -> 2-2
11 Shogun17 – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Energy Field / Necrogen Mists / The Rack
If he's on the play, chancellor stops one lotus. The other can cast either field+rack or mists. either way, i win easily. 4-1 -> 6-0
15 ced395 – Augur of Skulls / Inquisition of Kozilek / Sheltered Valley / Swamp / The Rack
Chancellor stops any first turn spell, and pillar gets the rest. 0-6 -> 6-0
18 VikingMetal4L – Avatar of Hope / Copper Tablet / Kabira Crossroads / Nezumi Shortfang / Scrubland
He has no first turn spell. He can't play tablet or shortfang through my pillar, so chancellor can counter his avatar. 0-6 -> 6-0
I haven't checked the rest of the results, but I can immediately see 9 vs. 10 is wrong. I might check some others when I get a chance.
1-17: I respond to Sheltered Valley's trigger by killing you.
9-17: You're correct.
10-17: You're correct.
11-17: You can't win through Field.
12-17: Nemean responds to Sheltered Valley's trigger by killing you.
15-17: Should be 3-3. Valley-Rack (countered) puts ced395 at 3 life when Dragon has one counter. He cast Augur (counter on Dragon) and attacks.
17-18: VM4L plays Crossroads (2 life), Tablet (countered), and Avatar (cmc > 3), then wins.
VM4L's correction, 7-18, is correct.
Sorry, edited my post as you were writing.
You're right on all counts. I'm bad at reading cards and thought pillar dealt 3 damage.
Foil is useless against Festival/Leyline, so festival must be inquisitioned. Pet steamrolls over cystbearer, so it must be foiled. Personman can only play one disruption if he wants to win, so he always plays for the draw.
If I play first, Leyline starts on the battlefield, I'd play Tundra and pass.
He must inquistion Festival before his next turn, so he must play underground sea and inquistion.
I play gemstone and pet during my turn. He can't foil it as he only has 3 mana available since the underground sea is tapped. I have an empty hand for the rest of the game.
My turn 1: Refuge
His turn 1: both leylines, Factory.
My turn 2: Sleeper agent, ability has no targets due to leyline of sanctuary and fizzles. I keep it.
His turn 2: bounceland.
My turn 3: Shining Shoal 2 damage from me to Sleeper Agent, which is a 3/3 and survives. Attack with Sleeper Agent for 3, gg.
Also, I think I beat 7 on the play and should be 4-1 there, too
Turn 1 Leyline, Refuge
Turn 1: Urborg, Shield Sphere, tap urborg to pay for Annex; or Diamond Valley, no spell, or Urborg, Blackmail is countered by Annex
Turn 2: Play sleeper agent
Turn 2: Die on upkeep
Finally, I should 4-1 vs. 17. I kill him on the play, but on the draw, from turn 2 onward I can simply tap my land to pay for the Annex tax on Shining Shoal. He can wait long enough on the sheltered valley that I can't kill him with it his own dragon, but by redirecting the damage from me to the creature, I can leave him with no threats and force a tie.
We each win on the play so it's (3-3)
Prestart - Leyline, Leyline, Reveal Annex
My turn 1: Factory
Your turn 1: Refuge (stay at 1 life)
My turn 2: Bounce Factory for Garrison
Your turn 2: MUST play Sleeper Agent, which you keep, to have a valid Shoal target.
My turn 3: You ACC Shoal during my upkeep, (you can't in response to Sudden Shock due to split second) I play Factory, then pay 2R to cast SS through the Annex counter effect, it's redirected to Agent, which lives.
Your turn 3: Agent kills you during upkeep.
Vs Deck 11 - double draw instead of 0-6
Both games I hold Leyline of Punishment in hand.
Prestart - Leyline of Sanctity
My turn 1 - Factory
His turn 1 - Plays out hand, Rack can't target me because of Leyline.
My turn 2 - Discard LoP to Necrogen Mists, Bounce Factory for Garrison.
His turn 2 - Nothing
My turn 3 - Discard Sudden Shock to Mists, play Factory, but can't get through his Energy Field.
Vs Deck 12 - 3-3 instead of 0-6
He can't kill me directly using Leyline/Festival because of my Leyline, he has to get Pet on the Board. He wins on play, but I win when I'm on play.
We each win on the play so it's (3-3)
Prestart - Leyline, Leyline, Reveal Annex
My turn 1: Factory
Your turn 1: Refuge (stay at 1 life)
My turn 2: Bounce Factory for Garrison

I have Leyline of Sanctity too, you can't target me.
5-11: The Rack doesn't target.
5-12: Pet is a turn one play. It attacks turn two. Caverns exiles Festival to leave Nemean without a hand.
Um, against the two decks that have energy field, sleeper agent is gained by them, so energy field doesn't stop the damage. So against 16, I 6-0 and against 11 I 3-3. Also, for me to win against 11 I have to not put my leyline in play so I can discard it to necrogen mists on my 2nd turn's upkeep and not lose to the rack
On play or draw, I play farm, you play your stuff, then whenever the last time counter on Pardic Dragon would be removed, in response I play Orim's chant and choose NOT to put a time counter on it. Draw.

An ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability. Some abilities cause a source to do something rather than the ability. Any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. If the source is no longer in the zone it's expected to be in, its last known information is used.
On account of knobbodi's corrections, it's worth checking any match between Energy Field and Sleeper Agent. I forgot that Field only prevents damage from sources its controller doesn't control.

In that case, I can still Orim's chant his dragon when I'm on the play, and if that happens, I actually win.
Which forces him to play turn 1 pyrostatic pillar and draw the game.
That means that I 6-0 versus both energy field decks, 11 and 16. Neither of them can do anything to stop Sleeper Agent.
Note to self: ALWAYS READ WHICH LEYLINE IT IS.
As it stands, Reyemile is now the winner.
