EDIT: Holy crap guys, results are finally here! Lots of interesting matches that have been highlighted in blue for your convenience. And keep an eye on that Guildmage! He's goin' places.
As is obvious, I am way behind this week. The deadline for next week will be extended to Thursday. This week is also surprisingly enormous, with a bunch of new people, and a bunch of haven't-seen-you-in-a-while people, and all the regulars. Which is great! But it means it will be slow going.
One other nice thing about this round is that just about all the 'known-good' archetypes showed up, as well as a bunch of innovative newness, which means that if some of that newness does well, we'll no it's *actually* good, and also means we can get some nice comparison of the good decks against each other and a diverse field. Yay!
Results will be trickling in over the next day or so.
Rules:
0. Overview
Two Card Blind (2CB) is a Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit two-card decks which are played against each other by the moderator. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1. Game Rules
1.1. Except for the changes described in these rules, games follow the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly two cards, which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
1.5 Whenever a player could play a Land card, that player may put a Basic Land card from outside the game onto the battlefield. (Basic Snow Lands are Basic.)
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the 2CB moderator (Personman).
2.1a. The moderator informs players of mistakes in a timely manner. (Sometimes. Often I run kinda late. Be careful.)
2.1b. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent as of the deadline is counted.
2.1c. If a player's final deck is illegal, their most recent legal deck is used. If no legal deck has been submitted, they do not participate.
2.2. A player may not submit a deck that can, against any deck, win the game or force one or more cards in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's first turn, or force a specific card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn. (Note that forcing your opponent to discard two cards is very likely to force a specific card their hand to change zones.)
2.3. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1).
2.4. Each player plays one match, consisting of two games, against each other player. Each player is the starting player once per match. Results assume optimal play and perfect information.
2.4a. If no player can win, the game is a draw.
2.4b. A player that can't win or draw plays to extend the game.
2.5. Points determine tournament standings. Players are ranked, first to last, in order of decreasing number of points.
2.5a. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. Matches in which each player wins one game and loses one game are worth only 2 points per player, rather than 3.
2.5b. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. Match results reflect the combined result of both games played in a match. A player's total points are listed at the end of his or her row.
3. Banned List
3.1 The following cards are banned. Any deck that includes a card on this list is illegal.
* Fastbond
* Meddling Mage
* Arcane Denial
* Figure of Destiny
* Nezumi Shortfang
* The Rack
* Black Lotus
POTM:
Each month, the player with the highest combined score from the four rounds that month is designated Player of the Month. Here are the previous winners, in reverse chronological order:
Next week is Backbuild: Before each match, switch decks with your opponent. Your deck must beat any deck comprised of two basic land. Impatience is banned. Rise of the Eldrazi is legal. If you're not familiar with the set, click here.
Also remember that the PotM standings are being updated each week this month; once results are up you should check out how you're doing!
This week's deadline is 11:59PM EST next Thursday. Once again, sorry for being so late! This semester is kinda crazy.
WhammWhamme (Dragonmaster Outcast + Vindicate)
vs Tilde : 6-0 (Vindicate > Cosmic Larva)
vs Domogrue: 6-0 (Dragonmaster > Azorius Guildmage)
vs IOPut: 6-0 ? (Dragonmaster should be able to win the race, I think? not sure)
vs bmh: 0-6
vs personman: 0-6
vs Tails 2k5: 6-0 (Vindicate > Energy Field)
vs VikingMetal4L: 6-0 (Dragonmaster > Gargoyle)
vs Deaths_Vampire: 0-6 (Smallpox > Dragonmaster)
vs tomsloger: 6-0 ? (Dragonmaster should win the race, given Squirrel Wrangler dies the turn he plays it?)
vs Thundersnow: 6-0 ? (I think Dragonmaster outraces Beacon, but I think I may be a turn too slow)
vs Xyre: 0-6
vs mutantman: 0-6
vs Naphtali: 6-0 (Dragonmaster > Gargoyle)
vs OneMoreTime: 1-4 (on the play I can vindicate Rhys before he loses summoning sickness)
vs ced395: 0-6
~Tilde~ = 6-0
IOPut = Complicated. I don't have time right now
bmh = 3-3 I'll take your word for it for now
Personman = 6-0 I'm pretty sure. I keep mana up for the act, and then I tap Garg
Tails2k5 = 3-3 I think. If I lay down the guildmage when I have 4 mana to counter, then I basically race him, and on the play get there in time, draw I dont
VikingMetal4L = 3-3. We've talked about this.
Death's_Vampire = 6-0. Draw I discard Mana Drain to Pox, play guildmage and win OR wait till I have countermana then play guildmage and win.
tomsloger = 3-3 I like your deck! On the play I got countermana for your wrangler, on the draw I don't. After that, I think you out-token me.
Thundersnow = 2-2 Mana drain Bacon of Creation, Azorius can't attack. Oops.
Xyre = 6-0. I beat anything that comes online T3 or later.
WhammWhamme = 0-6 Dang son you fine.
MutantMan = 6-0 Yup mine is tailed to beat the classics.
Naphtali = 3-3 You think like a certain POTM I know...
OneMoreTime = 6-0 Instead of tapping your dude I counter his ability. Awkward.
ced395 = 6-0 qq.
Naphtali/VinkingMetal4L (Mana Vault + Voidstone Gargoyle)
vs Tilde (Exploration + Cosmic Larva) 3-3
vs domogrue (Azorius Guildmage + Mana Drain) 3-3
vs IOPut (Vigor + Llanowar Mentor) 0-6 (Elves > Gargoyle)
vs bmh (Anurid Scavenger + Time Walk) 6-0 (Gargoyle prevents recursion of Time Walk)
vs Personman/mutantman (Greater Gargadon + Balancing Act) 0-6 (Gargoyle has to name Balancing Act and can't race in time)
vs Tails2k5 (Helix Pinnacle + Energy Field) 4-1 (Gargoyle prevents Pinnacle activations on the draw)
vs VikingMetal4L (mirror) 3-3
vs Deaths_Vampire (Nether Spirit + Smallpox) 6-0 (Hold vault to discard to smallpox on the draw, gargoyle still races spirit by 1 turn)
vs tomsloger (Exploration + Squirrel Wrangler) 6-0 (Gargoyle prevents Squirrel activations
vs Thundersnow (Ensnaring Bridge + Beacon of Creation) 2-2
vs Xyre (Terravore + Armageddon) 6-0
vs WhammWhamme (Dragonmaster Outcast + Vindicate) 0-6 (Dragonmaster > Gargoyle)
vs OneMoreTime (Rhys the Redeemed + Vindicate) 0-6 (Rhys > Gargoyle)
vs ced395 (Dark Depths + Vampire Hexmage) 6-0 (Gargoyle races 1 turn before depths can trigger the slow way)
I'm rusty as all heck, so expect errors.... and there's my first self-correction the Vigor Elves are too much as well.
Another correction. Can't beat Greater Gargadon + Balancing Act either
Thundersnow (Ensnaring Bridge + Beacon of Creation)
vs Tilde (Exploration + Cosmic Larva) 6-0
vs domogrue (Azorius Guildmage + Mana Drain) 2-2 always counters beacon
vs IOPut (Vigor + Llanowar Mentor) 6-0 I overrun the elves
vs bmh (Anurid Scavenger + Time Walk) 1-4 (on the play I get to drop bridge before I am locked out)
vs Tails2k5 (Helix Pinnacle + Energy Field) 0-6
vs Deaths_Vampire (Nether Spirit + Smallpox) 6-0 (Discard bridge and I still win the race)
vs tomsloger (Exploration + Squirrel Wrangler) 6-0 (I eventually amass more tokens than he does)
vs Naphtali/VinkingMetal4L (Mana Vault + Voidstone Gargoyle) 2-2 (names beacon)
vs Xyre (Terravore + Armageddon) 6-0
vs WhammWhamme (Dragonmaster Outcast + Vindicate) 6-0 (I beat the dragon in the race and vindicate can only hit bridge)
vs OneMoreTime (Rhys the Redeemed + Vindicate) 6-0 (Rhys almost makes enough tokens to not get overwhelmed)
vs ced395 (Dark Depths + Vampire Hexmage) 6-0
vs Personman (Greater Gargadon + Balancing Act) ? um idk,
vs mutantman (Greater Gargadon + Balancing Act) ?
the matches against the gargadon deck get really interesting.
I was double-checking the Scavenger/TimeWalk results and if I'm reading the results right I get different results for the following matchups.
Anurid Scavenger + Timewalk
vs (Vigor + Llanowar Mentor) 6-0 (only have 2 elves and a tapped Mentor to block the 3/3 scavenger before being locked out)
vs (Exploration + Squirrel Wrangler) 4-1 (On the play can create 2 squirrels, giving a 2/2 and 2x 1/1's to block with)
vs (Ensnaring Bridge + Beacon of Creation) 4-1 (On the play can get Bridge down)
vs (Dark Depths + Hexmage) 4-1 (On the play Hexmage can activate to get the 20/20 blocker before Anurid locks out)
vs tilde 6-0. im faster.
vs domogrue 2-2. when he goes first, he counters squirrel wrangler. when i go first, i win.
vs ioput 6-0. my tokens come 4 a turn.
vs bmh 1-4. on the play i have 6 squirrels before getting locked out. i guess that means draw.
vs personman/mutantman 2-2 (x2). with no disruption, i win turn 4. (t1 exploration, t2 squirrel wrangler, t3 make 6 squirrel tokens & swing for 2, t4 give all squirrels +1/+1 twice & swing for 20). on the play, this happens.
vs tails2k5 0-6. bastard.
vs vikingmetal4l/naphtali 0-12. ditto.
vs deathsvampire 6-0. if i discard exploration to smallpox, squirrel wrangler is still way faster than nether spirit
vs thundersnow 0-6 i can beat beacon. not the bridge.
vs whammwhamme 6-0 i believe. if i just hold the squirrel wrangler in hand until i have 12 mana (which is before you have any dragons), and immediately make 16 squirrels, i kill you before you kill me.
vs onemoretime 6-0. on the play, if i once again wait til 12 mana for my 16 tokens, rhys will have made 3 and onemoretime can either double tokens or make one and vindicate. i win. on the draw, i think i do 14 tokens on turn 5, which is also enough to kill him.
vs ced395 0-6. pretty much nothing i can do about it. if vampire hexmage didnt have first strike, this is different. but as it is, i can only get 18 damage through.
Someone explain IOPut vs me to me. I'm happy that personman marked it as 6-0, but I still can't wrap my head around it.
EDIT: Wait, no I think I got it. Basically @ 3 mana I can start countering the ability, @6 I can start tapping dudes, @12+ I stabalized?
EDIT EDIT: I think I am at 65 points for this round. For now.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: I mean 60 points. Every W-L counts for 2 points, not 3. And someone is going to make a correction that puts me back into 2nd or 3rd place. AWESOME.
sweet! i like beating thundersnow for no apparent reason.
upon further consideration, split with the vindicates.
vs dragonmaster + vindicate:
on the play
t1 exploration
t2 wrangler
t3 6 tokens, attack for 2
t4 (after wrangler is vindicated) attack for 6
t5 6 more
t6 6 more, thats 20 and if he ever blocks he loses his wincon and i win slower but eventually
against rhy + vindicate its similar. but on his turn 4 he can make his first token and block 1 per turn. same result, but one turn later.
pretty sure I 1-4 against anurid, on the draw I get time-walked out of playing anything, and on the play I just play bridge
ignore this stuff
Can you explain the balancing act/Ensnaring bridge match I was thinking about it and it was really wierd. I did not actually figure out optimal play for both sides
I have been going over it and I think I win 6-0 EDIT: or maybe not I forgot about the discard part
gargadon can never get in to play before T5
If Act kills all of my lands on T4 I go to 2 then play bridge then win
any time after my fourth turn, I will have a token in play.
Gargadon cannot resolve with act on the stack or I save a land/saproling and I am able to play the bridge when I am at 2 life.
if gargadon is still suspended when act resolves (even if it has one counter) I get to three mana before I lose.
if Gargadon is ever in play before act resolves I will play bridge.
(Mana Vault + Voidstone Gargoyle) vs (Dark Depths + Hexmage)
20 20 B
20 20 W Vault
20 20 BB Hexmage
20 20 WW Gargoyle naming Hexmage (So it can't activate to sacrifice, that is an activated ability right?)
20 20 BB Depths(10)
17 19 WWW -1 for Mana Vault. Swing with Gargoyle
17 17 BBB Depths(9) Swing with Hexmage
14 16 WWWW -1 for Mana Vault. Untap Vault. Swing with Gargoyle
14 14 BBBB Depths(8). Swing with Hexmage
11 14 Swing with Gargoyle
11 12 BBBBB Depths(7). Swing with Hexmage
8 12 Swing with Gargoyle
8 10 BBBBBB Depths(5). Swing with Hexmage
5 10 Swing with Gargoyle
5 8 BBBBBBB Depths(3). Swing with Hexmage
2 8 Swing with Gargoyle
2 6 BBBBBBBB Depths(1). Swing with Hexmage
0 6 Swing with Gargoyle for the win.
Grid looks wrong for OneMoreTime vs Naphtali + VikingMetal4L... 6-4 unless I'm reading it wrong. Pretty sure its 6-0 for OneMoreTime
Maybe its just because the grid is funky along the top? 1234567801923645?
I'm guessing that 4 should be matching up against Tails2k5
It took me a while to get just how good Greater Gargadon + Balancing Act was too.
As I understand it on the 4th turn it taps out to cast Balancing Act then sacs all 4 lands to speed up the Gargadon before the Balancing Act resolves, which means the Act forces you to sacrifice all permanents and discard all your cards.
Not seeing what you mean about OneMoreTime; I think you were seeing it wrong. However, you're right about you vs. Dark Depths, and the spreadsheet is updated.
Thundersnow: Fixed the Anurid match. Not sure how that one happened.
Yeah, Balancing Act is pretty strong. It's turn 4 though, which makes me hesitant to put it in the same category as Figure and Denial (and Lotus and Shortfang &c) just because it's won a couple times.
sweet! i like beating thundersnow for no apparent reason.
upon further consideration, split with the vindicates.
vs dragonmaster + vindicate:

t1 exploration
t2 wrangler
t3 6 tokens, attack for 2

k.
I think the posted results disagree with a few things people have said in several places, but the only ones I remember are tomslogers:
vs. Ensnaring Bridge you can win on the play by attacking before you pump.
vs. Dragonmaster and Rhys you can only make 8 guys on turn 6, not 16 as you stated. This makes you lose.
upon further consideration, split with the vindicates.
vs dragonmaster + vindicate:
on the play
t1 exploration
t2 wrangler
t3 6 tokens, attack for 2
t4 (after wrangler is vindicated) attack for 6
t5 6 more
t6 6 more, thats 20 and if he ever blocks he loses his wincon and i win slower but eventually
against rhy + vindicate its similar. but on his turn 4 he can make his first token and block 1 per turn. same result, but one turn later.
ignore this stuff

Also people need to think about GargAct more >: (. Stupid good deck beating more people.
