So was Thoughtseize actually a menace? Hardly. It showed up in 18% of decks, and you can see for yourself how they scored. This week’s format is normal, and the following week will be pseudo-normal. What that means I’ll explain when we get there. We’re halfway into the month, and as a result of the scoring system and a number of solid players, this is still anyone’s game to win, so good luck.
3 Apex – Library of Alexandria / Mutavault / Powder Keg / Swamp / Thoughtseize Normally, I think Encroach is too-narrow of a card – but when everyone is building to beat Thoughtseize, Encroach can be truly devastating. EDIT: Try not to play illegal decks.
5 Umbacano – Cursecatcher / Daze / Island / Mutavault / Powder Keg This deck has a lot of options – unfortunately, small threats and small disruption tends to lose to bigger effects.
9 joedredd – Aether Vial / Goblin Lackey / Mountain / Murderous Redcap / Wort, Boggart Auntie I love goblins more than the next guy, but the little guys are little, and there has to be a way to compensate. Fear works as evasion, but on a 3/3 is a bit too slow. I think worried a bit too much about Thoughtseize.
13 Shadow Knight – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / The Rack Almost the expected, but lacking the central Thoughtseize, changing everything. The deck skips the formalities of Seize/Anti-Seize and loads up on damage.
3 math_geek – Fetid Heath / Hunted Horror / Hunted Horror / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity Totally dominated the pod. I’m glad to see this classic combo put up some results. Between Heath and Urborg, Heath was the better choice – when a deck is good, it helps to avoid random draws.
7 Iron_Blood – Mishra's Workshop / Steel Golem / The Rack / The Rack / The Rack I do believe that’s the most Racks I’ve ever seen in a deck. Possibly the most copies of a non-Lotus card I’ve ever seen (excluding YuanTi’s 5x Factory; Someone correct me if I’m wrong.). Two might have been enough, though, with a third slot to give you some more options.
9 dethwing – Aethersnipe / Commandeer / Guile / Isleback Spawn / Saprazzan Cove One thing that I enjoy about special rounds is how different the timing can be – Guile was relevant fairly often even if it was the first spell you cast. But that often led to draws.
14 Darko121 – Black Lotus / Platinum Angel / Seat of the Synod / Tinker / Welding Jar I owe Darko121 an apology. This is the original deck, and I noticed that it couldn’t win, but didn’t notice until an hour ago that the resubmission – Brainstorm over Welding Jar – was illegal.
Five Card Blind (5CB) is a weekly Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit five-card decks which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly five cards, which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the 5CB moderator (Mogg).
2.1a. The moderator acknowledges submissions and informs players of mistakes in a timely manner.
2.1b. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent is counted.
2.1c. If a player's final deck is illegal, the moderator replaces cards in the deck with Library of Alexandria until the deck is made legal. Replacements are made such that the revised deck functions as closely as possible to the original.
2.2. A player may not submit a deck that can, against any deck, win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn.
For example, Cabal Therapy + Swamp x4 is illegal because an opponent's deck may have duplicates of a card, but Cabal Therapy + Subterranean Hangar x4 is legal because Cabal Therapy can't be played until the third turn.
2.3. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1), with the exception of the following banned cards:
2.4. Each player plays one match, consisting of two games, against each other player. Each player is the starting player once per match. Results assume optimal play and perfect information (a player that can't win or draw plays to not lose for as many turns as possible).
2.5. Points determine tournament standings. Players are ranked, first to last, in order of decreasing number of points.
2.5a. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. However, a player that wins one game and loses the other earns only 2 points.
2.5b. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. Match results reflect the combined result of both games played in a match; 3 is a game win, 1 a drawn game, and 0 a game loss. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
2.6. The player with the most points over the course of a month becomes the Player of the Month.
Deck Submission Deadline:
Friday, June 19th, 2:00 pm PST.
Please use this thread to discuss any aspect of 5CB. Also, consider a subscription to 5CB. Subscribed players who have not already submitted a deck receive a reminder PM about two days before deadline. PM me to subscribe.
I was surprised you didn’t try Urza’s Factory / Storage Land / Dust Bowl / Tabernacle / Other.
Looking at the field, it doesn't matter much. The main problem is that risking five land didn't pay off since too few of the decks were vulnerable to Tabernacle.

I think Apex's deck is illegal because he can force his opponent to discard two cards before his opponent's second turn.
Oh man! I totally forgot about that. Though I wonder how relevant it was to the actual game results. Thoughtseize was just an afterthought, cuz I was like, if I can't beat them why not join them? Boooooo me.

Check out my pauper cube! and thanks to PurpleD @ [<--- Left Play Design <---] for making this awesome banner!
Math Geek is a beast at this game. Entered during the new player round and the normal round that was run at the same time, and did well 4 weeks in a row. Did you play this on another forum?
Hey, total noob here - I'll probably enter this week's game, so I read all the rules as carefully as possible, and I got confused by the points section. It reads:
Looking at last week's results, I see that some matches resulted in scores of 2/2, and some in scores of 3/3. I'm confused about how 3/3 is ever possible, given 2.5a, and 2.5b doesn't even mention the possibility of a 2.
I'm sure I'm just missing something simple, but I'd like to understand.
I'll edit this post when I'm done checking and posting corrections. Encroach in Apex's deck will be replaced with Library. My apologies to Apex for not noticing.
Thanks guys - maybe the rules should be modified slightly, to something like
2.5b. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. A player/opponent entry represents that player's score in their match against that opponent. A score of 2 as a result of one win and one loss is reported as 3 in the match results table to distinguish it from two draws, but is still worth only 2 points. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
A better idea would be to PM them to Mogg, as per the instructions. (And if you haven't read the instructions, I would recommend doing so first.)

<Limited Clan>
in my match against:
13 Shadow Knight – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / The Rack
Bitterblossom is useless against Leyline, and he can't attack with Muta or cast Nezumi without me bouncing with Karakas at end of his turn, so all he can is cast The Rack, which, because i hold Life from the Loam the whole game can do max 2 pts a turn, while i can do 3 a turn with Treetop. i think i win both games this way. this matchup is exactly why i played the Sanctuary over other lands.
and against:
14 diet.pepsi.drinker – Mutavault / Path to Exile / Path to Exile / Pithing Needle / Plains
he can Needle my Karakas so he can attack with Mutavault BUT... if he attacks with it he doesn't have mana to Path my Treetop attacker, and i would win that race SO... he has to Needle my Treetop which means i can use Karakas against his Mutavault, resulting in a draw for both games.
@riddle- the problem comes when i force you to use karakas to bounce nezumi every turn meaning village sits there doing nothing except being leafy. in the other match, i don't see why he wouldn't cast the needle with mutavault and then use the plains to path your village.
@Halinn- if the land becomes a creature, the leyline/karakas bounce works on it though (I thought (edit- I was wrong)). *shrug* I still win because I'll just keep making sure he can't activate his win con while rack eats away at his life.
MMQ: Secluded glen (Leyline)
MG: Karakas
MMQ: Mutavault
MG: Heath, Hunted horror #1
MMQ: play rotting rats, discard progenitus, (MG discards Hunted Horror #2) play shelldock isle - hideaway progen (no cards in hand, tapped out, rotting rats in play)
MG: Bounce Rats, Attack for 7
MMQ: (13). Do nothing. (rats in hand, 3 lands untapped)
MG: Can't attack with H.H. as it will die to instant-speed progenitus. (Karakas can't bounce progen). EOT MMQ makes Progenitus.
MMQ: (13) Attack with unblockable progenitus (MG to 10)
MG: Attack with Hunted Horror
MMQ: (6) Attack for the win (MG to 0)
Now, MG is forced to hold back. If he kills or removes the rats, MMQ can combo out via replaying or unearthing the rats. For proof, here's what happens if MG bounces the rats:
MG: Bounce Rats, Attack for 7
MMQ: (13). Replay rats, discard progen, play shelldock isle. (Both hands are now empty)
MG: Bounce rats, Attack for 7
MMQ: (6) Do Nothing
MG: Can't attack into progenitus. EOT - MMQ makes progenitus
MMQ: (6) Attack for 10 (MG to 10)
MG: Attack into mutavault (can't be bounced), which chump blocks. 5 Tramples through. (MMQ to 1 life)
MMQ: (1) Attack for win.
If MG instead chooses not to bounce or attack into the rats, MMQ can't do much either. To get progenitus out, the rotting rats need to come into play again, and MMQ cant race the hunted horror with the rats alone. Draw.
math geek holds Leyline in his hand, which he can discard to Rats. That gives him two horrors. On another note, [card]Progenitus[*/card] (without *) is easier than the card tags you're using.
Riddle's corrections are incorrect for the reasons stated by Shadow Knight and Halinn.
I know he can hold the leyline back, but if he doesn't play leyline then i get 3/3 pro black centaurs off his horrors. 2x 3/3 centaurs plus either rats or mutavault can take down his horrors, so i would win.
P.S. I copy/pasted your tags into my post
Good point. The card tags issue confuses me, though, because when I quote your post, I get this:
20 - 30 is actually what I was expecting to get and is the ideal balance of manageable numbers and diverse metagame. The drop-off doesn't surprise me (though it's actually from 68, counting the regular round). Many more players showed up for the first round than I'd anticipated, and I appreciate that they gave the game a try. But 5CB is considerably different from other formats, and I imagine the lack of actually playing games is a turn-off to many (though the mod gets to play many games).
Until about Round 33 or 34, carrion_pigeons and then WhammWhamme kept a list of all played decks (since the restart), which you can find in a spoiler in one of those threads. The decks are listed alphabetically and not sorted by format.
Before I do, a quick question - are matches in which neither player is ever willing to change the gamestate except by passing the turn (ie., if either player plays does anything they lose) considered draws? I can't really see how else that would be handled, but the rules don't address it.

Results
A Heat
1 Mogg – Chalice of the Void / Glacial Chasm / Jinxed Choker / Jinxed Choker / Mishra's Workshop
Right idea, but Chalice was mostly irrelevant.
2 lOput – Foil / Island / Nether Spirit / Pendelhaven / Thallid
Needs the second piece of disruption.
3 Apex – Library of Alexandria / Mutavault / Powder Keg / Swamp / Thoughtseize
Normally, I think Encroach is too-narrow of a card – but when everyone is building to beat Thoughtseize, Encroach can be truly devastating. EDIT: Try not to play illegal decks.
4 phoenix33 – Chalice of the Void / City of Traitors / Isochron Scepter / Raise the Alarm / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
You won a lot of games with legendary LD. Lacking that disruption, though, you were a bit vulnerable.
5 Umbacano – Cursecatcher / Daze / Island / Mutavault / Powder Keg
This deck has a lot of options – unfortunately, small threats and small disruption tends to lose to bigger effects.
6 Magus819 – Glacial Chasm / Jinxed Choker / Jinxed Choker / Mishra's Workshop / Power Conduit
Conduit was nice synergy that complemented an already great metagames foil.
7 FuriouslySleepingIdea – Black Lotus / Channel / Echoing Ruin / March of the Machines / Mycosynth Lattice
This deck is my proof that the round wasn’t dominated by Thoughtseize. Might be a risky choice considering last week, but when it works it works in a big way.
8 Some One – Mishra's Factory / Mutavault / Swamp / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Thoughtseize
I think you could have squeezed in a more relevant piece of disruption than Factory. Excluding Apex, land disruption is nonexistent.
9 joedredd – Aether Vial / Goblin Lackey / Mountain / Murderous Redcap / Wort, Boggart Auntie
I love goblins more than the next guy, but the little guys are little, and there has to be a way to compensate. Fear works as evasion, but on a 3/3 is a bit too slow. I think worried a bit too much about Thoughtseize.
10 ced395 – Academy Ruins / Calciform Pools / Misdirection / Platinum Angel / Venser, Shaper Savant
I think I’m justified in not liking this archetype – both narrow and slow. Angel was a good call, but it needs to be in play to have an effect. No hard feelings, but your deck clue amused me.
11 riddle – Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Life from the Loam / Selesnya Sanctuary / Treetop Village
Resilience – check. Early disruption – check. A solid deck that needed one more card to push it over the top. Basically 4CB.
12 IBjeremy – Mutavault / Swamp / The Rack / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Thoughtseize
Powerful, but this was the expected strategy.
13 Shadow Knight – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / The Rack
Almost the expected, but lacking the central Thoughtseize, changing everything. The deck skips the formalities of Seize/Anti-Seize and loads up on damage.
14 diet.pepsi.drinker – Mutavault / Path to Exile / Path to Exile / Pithing Needle / Plains
Good for drawing, but Paths don’t push through damage against man-lands.

B Heat
1 Halinn – Esper Stormblade / Meddling Mage / Mox Pearl / Tidehollow Sculler / Underground Sea
Consistent. You just had trouble converting that consistency into match wins in the finals. By nature, a 3-3 deck.
2 bateleur – Forest / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Treetop Village / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth / Vesuva
I was surprised you didn’t try Urza’s Factory / Storage Land / Dust Bowl / Tabernacle / Other. Dust Bowl would have given you more of 5-land’s superior inevitability.
3 math_geek – Fetid Heath / Hunted Horror / Hunted Horror / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity
Totally dominated the pod. I’m glad to see this classic combo put up some results. Between Heath and Urborg, Heath was the better choice – when a deck is good, it helps to avoid random draws.
4 Kotoso – Academy Ruins / Engineered Explosives / Epochrasite / Izzet Boilerworks / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Bases 1-3 covered, but big and fast threats could get by. Nice engine for a very specific metagame.
5 haoban3 – Chalice of the Void / Epochrasite / Epochrasite / Mishra's Workshop / The Rack
Epochrasite is resilience. Two Epochs is more resilience. But Rack works best with some pressure, and 1/1’s are menacing even if they lack eyes.
6 Riftbot – Ancient Ziggurat / Meddling Mage / Putrid Leech / Thoughtseize / Underground Sea
I’m starting to run out of comments for two-drop Thoughtseize decks, but Leech’s speed was relevant and often a deciding factor.
7 Iron_Blood – Mishra's Workshop / Steel Golem / The Rack / The Rack / The Rack
I do believe that’s the most Racks I’ve ever seen in a deck. Possibly the most copies of a non-Lotus card I’ve ever seen (excluding YuanTi’s 5x Factory; Someone correct me if I’m wrong.). Two might have been enough, though, with a third slot to give you some more options.
8 omegaorb – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Scrubland / Soul Warden / Thoughtseize
Soul Warden is synergy, but it’s not a badass like Shortfang. Solid deck, though.
9 dethwing – Aethersnipe / Commandeer / Guile / Isleback Spawn / Saprazzan Cove
One thing that I enjoy about special rounds is how different the timing can be – Guile was relevant fairly often even if it was the first spell you cast. But that often led to draws.
10 Madmanquail – Mutavault / Progenitus / Rotting Rats / Secluded Glen / Shelldock Isle
Awesome combo. I’m amused that your answer to discard involves discarding your win condition, but it works.
11 carrion pigeons – Aether Vial / Eater of Days / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Ritual of Restoration
Fairly similar to #3. Slower, bigger guy, but the same idea.
12 Niv – Bonesplitter / City of Traitors / Myr Servitor / Myr Servitor / Umezawa's Jitte
The deck rode on Jitte – a powerful card, but some disruption diversity might serve you well. Bonesplitter is somewhat redundant.
13 jskura – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Goblin Assault / Goblin Assault / Mountain
So each heat gets its goblin rush, and all is right in the world.
14 Darko121 – Black Lotus / Platinum Angel / Seat of the Synod / Tinker / Welding Jar
I owe Darko121 an apology. This is the original deck, and I noticed that it couldn’t win, but didn’t notice until an hour ago that the resubmission – Brainstorm over Welding Jar – was illegal.

Looking at the field, it doesn't matter much. The main problem is that risking five land didn't pay off since too few of the decks were vulnerable to Tabernacle.

3 FuriouslySleepingIdea – Black Lotus / Channel / Echoing Ruin / March of the Machines / Mycosynth Lattice
4 Shadow Knight – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / The Rack
On the play, my deck throws down its combo, and Shadow Knight is locked out.
On the draw, Shadow Knight can only play either Nezumi Shortfang or the Rack on his first turn.
I can then channel out lattice, march, and echoing ruin whichever he plays, leavng him with no permanents and no way to do anything.
So, I believe that it should be 6-0 in favor of my deck (deck 3).
Oh man! I totally forgot about that. Though I wonder how relevant it was to the actual game results. Thoughtseize was just an afterthought, cuz I was like, if I can't beat them why not join them? Boooooo me.
Check out my pauper cube!

You could, but it would be a bad plan.
A better idea would be to PM them to Mogg, as per the instructions. (And if you haven't read the instructions, I would recommend doing so first.)

i think some of my matches might have been miscalculated as well.
my deck:
11 riddle – Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Life from the Loam / Selesnya Sanctuary / Treetop Village
in my match against:
13 Shadow Knight – Bitterblossom / Mutavault / Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / The Rack
Bitterblossom is useless against Leyline, and he can't attack with Muta or cast Nezumi without me bouncing with Karakas at end of his turn, so all he can is cast The Rack, which, because i hold Life from the Loam the whole game can do max 2 pts a turn, while i can do 3 a turn with Treetop. i think i win both games this way. this matchup is exactly why i played the Sanctuary over other lands.
and against:
14 diet.pepsi.drinker – Mutavault / Path to Exile / Path to Exile / Pithing Needle / Plains
he can Needle my Karakas so he can attack with Mutavault BUT... if he attacks with it he doesn't have mana to Path my Treetop attacker, and i would win that race SO... he has to Needle my Treetop which means i can use Karakas against his Mutavault, resulting in a draw for both games.

math geek holds Leyline in his hand, which he can discard to Rats. That gives him two horrors. On another note, [card]Progenitus[*/card] (without *) is easier than the card tags you're using.
Riddle's corrections are incorrect for the reasons stated by Shadow Knight and Halinn.

Good point. The card tags issue confuses me, though, because when I quote your post, I get this:

Before I do, a quick question - are matches in which neither player is ever willing to change the gamestate except by passing the turn (ie., if either player plays does anything they lose) considered draws? I can't really see how else that would be handled, but the rules don't address it.
