Someone recently asked me why I discontinued deck titles: it's to stop propogating corny puns like my titles. For whatever reason, I seem to favor Kansas of late – specifically the Leftoverture if you look at last round. But players who have been around for a while will find another meaning in the title, one that makes me very happy. carrion pigeons is back! Those of you who recognize the name, but can't quite place it, he was mentioned in bateleur's article. cp is the one who revived 5CB about a year-and-a-half ago and ran it for more than thirty rounds.
bateleur is another person I'd like to thank. Not only did he write the article that got you all here, he also wrote all the deck comments and suggested the format for this special round. That's right, the next two rounds will have a special format - Block Party: Choose an Extended-legal block (Onslaught, Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ravnica, Time Spiral, Lorwyn, or Alara). At least three cards in your deck must be from the chosen block.
Last person I'd like to thank is ced395. He's accepted moderatorship for next week while I try to focus for my finals. Please send all decks to him. Also, note that the scoring format will change slightly. From now on, we'll be dividing you into three or four heats. The top three scorers from each heat will then be paired against each other, and the points they score in that final round will count toward the player of the month race. This would probably be a good time to mention that this round marks the start of a new month and a new player of the month race, so pick your deck wisely.
In general, this round greatly exceeded my expectations – for sheer numbers as well as creativity and competetiveness. There were some very good decks this round. And it's possible that in awe of the great deckbuilding, I missed some interactions and messed up some scores. If you believe I've made a mistake, please post an explanation in the thread. But since there are a lot of decks, I request that you think very carefully about each game in the match, and that you use the following format to post corrections:
Decklist One
Decklist Two
Score (Deck One – Deck Two) A-B -> C-D
Explanation.
Also, I'm looking for a program to let me process results and deck entry more quickly. If any programmer is interested, a list of desired features is included in the spoiler below. There would be no payment, but the program would be a great help to me and future 5CB moderators.
5CB Program – Desired Features
1. Compatibility
Ideally, the program is compatible with any major system. It must be compatible with Windows Vista.
2. Interface
There should be two interfaces which can be displayed next to each other. The first is for deck entry. The second is for the scoring table. It's important that I can have them open next to each other and easily scroll down either.
3. Deck-Entry Interface
Here are the features I would like for this section.
I. I enter decklists in list format. When I get to a new number, I enter a player name. Then, I enter five cards. When I've finished an entry, the program alphabetizes the cards in the deck and formats them correctly with slashes.
II. I should be able to change the order players appear in. If I move players around, they should be automatically renumbered. Also, this reordering should happen automatically in the scoring section.
III. There should be a button that let's me do and undo forum formatting. This entails adding cards tags, bolding players' names, and adding italics tags beneath each decklist.
IV. Card names should be spellcheck-able against the Gatherer database. The spellcheck should skip over deck comments.
4. Scoring Table Interface
I. The interface should work like a table, but without all the annoying lines separating things.
II. I should be able to add, remove, move, and highlight rows and columns. If I add, remove, or move a row or column, the scores should adjust for other decks. If I move a row or column, the corresponding row or colum should adjust, and the player's deck in the deck-entry interface should adjust.
III. As I add scores for a deck, the corresponding scores should be added for its opponents (0-6, 1-4, 2-2, 3-3, 4-1, 6-0). Also, the scores should be continuously summed and displayed at the end of each row. Remember that 3 counts as 2.
IV. There should be an automatically upated list of rank at the bottom of the table screen, including player name, number, and score.
V. There should be titles for each section, and a button that lets me add or remove underline forum code from the top of the table.
VI. I should be able to import POTM scores from the previous round and have the new scores automatically add.
5CB #83 results are listed below the results for the New Player Round.
2 Blarg – Chain of Vapor / Daze / Force Spike / Helix Pinnacle / Tropical Island Elegant... but the problem you had here was that some threats just can't be countered, like manlands. Also, with only one way to win it's not fun getting Thoughtseized.
10 jskura – Gaea's Cradle / Llanowar Elves / Pendelhaven / Slate of Ancestry / Words of Wilding Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my! Cute, but the trouble you have here is that you lose to pretty much anything that can stop you making bears. And in 5CB there are lots of things that can stop you making bears.
12 Sinzer – Black Lotus / Forest / Sol Ring / Stuffy Doll / Words of Wilding So there I am reading your decklist and I just know for sure the last card is going to be Guilty Conscience and then... eh?! Bears are cool. I get that. I'm just wondering if maybe there are some decks that don't want infinite bears?
13 SaumZ – Black Lotus / Daze / Inkwell Leviathan / Island / Master Transmuter Oooh, I love Transmuter! This deck's weakness is that unless you play first it's very easily disrupted. Also, I was thinking maybe Darksteel Colossus?
14 Charm_Master3125 – Mana Tithe / Path to Exile / Rancor / Savannah / Wild Nacatl This deck plays much too fair! Also, it hurts that you can't keep Tithe mana up the turn you cast your wild thing, because in 5CB a lot can happen in one turn.
16 NightArcher – Foil / Isamaru, Hound of Konda / Karakas / Path to Exile / Tundra Foil is always appealing, but I'm not convinced of your deck's capacity to actually win. Once you cast Foil you need Karakas to cast Isamaru at which point it's not ready to bounce him. Even if he lives, he's just a 2/2.
18 Shadow Knight – Black Lotus / Blurred Mongoose / Daze / River Boa / Tropical Island Black Lotus seems like a slightly odd choice for a deck like this. If anything messes with your Lotus, you can't resolve any threats! And unfortunately even when you can resolve your threats they're a bit on the small side against some opposition.
19 dsouthers2 – Black Lotus / Channel / Misdirection / Nullstone Gargoyle / Snakeform Sneaky use of Snakeform/Misdirection there! Unfortunately there are more ways than a straight counterspell to disrupt your combo. Plus, Gargoyle isn't a guarantee of victory even when resolved. Still, it mostly did the job. [What was the point of Snakeform? – Mogg]
21 jordman – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Meddling Mage / Meddling Mage / Meddling Mage A respectable attempt to break the format! Where this falls down is that your opponent only needs to stop one Lotus to stop your entire deck. If you play first there are few ways for them to do that. But if you play second...
23 Kamiken – Black Lotus / Braids, Conjurer Adept / Eureka / Island / Progenitus I'm impressed that you have two ways to get Progenitus into play... but the catch is that the opponent's disruption just gets aimed at your Lotus, which stops both methods at once!
26 Apex – Mishra's Workshop / Mox Jet / Sphere of Resistance / Steel Golem / The Rack Pretty good Workshop build. Sphere caught quite a few people off guard! Mox Jet might be better as Sol Ring given you don't use the black mana for anything (because hate for zero mana spells is sometimes played), but it doesn't make a significant difference.
28 falcon – Dryad Arbor / Elvish Spirit Guide / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Oxidize Committing to killing the opponent with a single 1/1 creature is a bold plan indeed! There's a lot that can go wrong here, but you did crush a few people whose threats you were able to answer.
29 dethwing – Ajani Vengeant / Argivian Find / Black Lotus / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity Nice idea combining Karakas/Leyline and a Planeswalker. I'm slightly puzzled as to the purpose of the Argivian Find. If the opponent has a counter, surely they'll use it on the Planeswalker?
30 IBjeremy – Black Lotus / City of Traitors / Dramatic Entrance / Progenitus / Soldevi Digger Good work fitting some recycling in alongside your Progenitus combo. A lot of players this round paid too little attention to the risk of having their Lotus countered or discarded.
31 FuriouslySleepingIdea – Crack the Earth / Gemstone Caverns / Mana Tithe / Plateau / Zealous Guardian There is a long and honourable tradition in 5CB of trying to get good use out of Gemstone Caverns. This was a decent attempt, but as you can see from your results it still isn't quite as good as it needs to be.
32 XenophanesFX – Daze / Foil / Nether Spirit / Tropical Island / Utopia Mycon An ingenious twist on a classic! Of course for the most part it had the same strength and weaknesses as the original. Still, a respectable performance. [Mycon instead of Thallid helped in exactly one game, when you needed to hardcast Spirit against another Foil deck. – Mogg]
36 ExplodingCow – Black Lotus / Crack the Earth / Daze / Mogg War Marshal / Volcanic Island Good synergy between Crack and War Marshal! This deck's a bit lacking in the threat department, but disrupted the opponent's plans enough to be good for a few wins.
37 Ecophagy – Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / Swamp / The Rack / Thoughtseize In an odd way I'm really impressed with this deck. Because you're one card away from a very strong netdeck (replace one of those Swamps with a Mishra's Factory), which suggests that you reinvented this archetype from scratch, If so, nice work! (PS. This works better with a Mishra's Factory in it!)
38 airza – Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Mana Tithe / Saltcrusted Steppe / Vitu-Ghazi, the City-Tree Nice design. This has a pleasing inevitability if the game goes long. The one catch is that Godot might turn up before it wins, which means if Tithe and Karakas between them don't stop the opponent's plan you're probably dead.
39 sauceofmalice – Chalice of the Void / Daze / Daze / Thallid / Tropical Island Heroic attempt at control, but only partly successful. Chalice is good here, but things you can't stop with Daze are probably not going to be stopped by two Dazes either. Still, where you had the right tools for the job your deck did its thing.
40 Dogod – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Dramatic Entrance / Progenitus / Pyroblast The big problem here is that nobody's going to counter Dramatic Entrance or name it with their Meddling Mages. What they're going to do is attack your Lotus. At which point Pyroblast is not castable! That aside, Entrance/Progenitus was a solid choice. [Pyroblast added one point to your total score, against Specter. – Mogg]
41 haoban3 – Brass Gnat / Llanowar Reborn / Sol Ring / Time Vault / Voltaic Key Very much an all-or-nothing strategy. Unusual to see a pure combo deck not relying on Black Lotus, but that came at the cost of some speed in this case.
45 Magus819 – Bloodhall Ooze / Karakas / Leyline of Lifeforce / Leyline of Singularity / Mountain Wow, remarkable similarity to deck 44! Whilst Ooze has marginal advantages over Tactician, where your deck really gained was in terms of being able to protect the Ooze on the turn it was cast. You lost some power from running a second land over Pithing Needle, though.
46 Gamerz – City of Traitors / Dust Bowl / Mishra's Factory / Smokestack / Soldevi Digger Running Smokestack without Mishra's Workshop is certainly unusual, but if the reward is access to Digger and Dust Bowl then I can see the appeal! Still, this did make the deck rather slow overall so wasn't without its drawbacks.
48 JackBrace – Black Lotus / Daze / Island / Sword of the Meek / Thopter Foundry This deck looked weak to me at first, but it works surprisingly well. The Sword/Foundry combo is particularly neat - did you bring that across from some other format?
49 gaura – Daze / Foil / Icatian Javelineers / Nether Spirit / Tundra I can see what you were aiming for here, but the key advantage of Thallid as a threat in Foil decks is that if your opponent never gives you anything to Foil it can beat a Mishra's Factory. The problem you have here is that Javelineers on its own is very hard to win with!
50 Alivezombie16 – Anurid Scavenger / Black Lotus / Foil / Island / Misguided Rage I would call this a timeless classic, but actually it has dated a little bit. Scavenger doesn't like to see Karakas/Leyline, which was a popular choice this round.
51 Hong Kong Phooey – Dust Bowl / Mishra's Factory / Simic Growth Chamber / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Treetop Village It's a nice feature of this build that you can animate both manlands at once. Still, for the most part it shares its strengths and weaknesses with most 5-land builds. Not that this was a bad feature this round, with a lot of players opting for control decks.
52 Baxta – Blurred Mongoose / Eternal Witness / Isao, Enlightened Bushi / Selesnya Sanctuary / Treetop Village This deck looks like it's expecting a fight! The funny thing is, you don't get many fights in 5CB. Usually your threat is either good enough, in which case you win, or gets answered in some way. Your Village is a good choice here, but none of the three other creatures are really adding much to the deck.
53 joedredd – Keldon Megaliths / Maze of Ith / Plateau / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth / Vindicate This is a very original 4-land build and has some good ideas in it. Presumably Maze over The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is because you were expecting enemy manlands? Tabernacle otherwise has good synergy with Vindicate. [Disappointed that you gave up on finding a win condition that doesn't make you blow up your board. – Mogg]
54 Umbacano – Black Lotus / Daze / Progenitus / Sneak Attack / Volcanic Island Wow - the first Progenitus deck I've seen that can recast it! The downside of this is that your Sneak Attack is a great deal more vulnerable to harm than Progenitus.
55 rambull – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Errant Ephemeron / Mystic Gate / Restore Balance Giving yourself the option to hardcast Ephemeron has a bad effect on your manabase here. You're right that options are good, but if you cannot access your Lotus mana you're in big trouble!
56 elitemantis – Black Lotus / Foil / Fulminator Mage / Island / Nether Spirit New variants on the classic Foil/Spirit deck are always worth looking for, but I'm not convinced this one has much to offer. The big trouble here is that if the opponent gives you nothing to counter then you cannot activate the Fulminator Mage without leaving yourself short of a win condition. This means that the Mage doesn't actually provide a good answer to manlands (Foil's traditional nemesis) because you'll only end up with a draw.
57 MozWazzu – Black Lotus / Blizzard Specter / Daze / Library of Alexandria / Underground Sea The deck you submitted was fairly potent... and also fairly illegal. Making the opponent discard twice on turn two is, unfortunately for you, not allowed. Still a decent deck without the Thoughtseize, but obviously worth being more careful next time (or submitting earlier so that you have time to make changes before the deadline).
58 oEJo – Foil / Misdirection / Mishra's Factory / Thoughtseize / Underground Sea Something's not quite right with this design, I suspect. The problem here is that if you cast Foil you give up all hope of winning! That's not a good thing in 5CB, because draws are simply not worth enough points to play for deliberately.
2 ced395 – Bloodhall Ooze / Daze / Foil / Nether Spirit / Tropical Island My preference is still for Thallid, which is by itself the larger threat. What scenarios were you thinking of when you chose Ooze?
5 Halinn – Bitterblossom / Mishra's Factory / Path to Exile / Scrubland / Thoughtseize I forget when, but somebody played Bitterblossom once in 5CB and did horribly, prompting a quote that "Bitterblossom sucks". It didn't win, but the faeries have at least been redeemed.
9 carrion pigeons – Daze / Island / Leyline of Singularity / Karakas / Meddling Mage Didn't you once say a basic rule of 5CB is that you have to be able to do something on turn 1? Karakas and Daze definitely count, but a faster Mage would have helped.
Five Card Blind (5CB) is a weekly Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit five-card decks which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1.2. Players' decks contain exactly five cards, which begin the game in hand. Players do not mulligan or sideboard.
1.3. Players' libraries begin the game empty. A player does not lose the game as a result of being unable to draw a card.
1.4. A random effect produces the result that least benefits the owner of the source of the effect.
2. Tournament Rules
2.1. Players submit their decks to the 5CB moderator (ced395).
2.1a. The moderator acknowledges submissions and informs players of mistakes in a timely manner.
2.1b. A player may submit multiple decks, but only the most recent is counted.
2.1c. If a player's final deck is illegal, the moderator replaces cards in the deck with Library of Alexandria until the deck is made legal. Replacements are made such that the revised deck functions as closely as possible to the original.
2.2. A player may not submit a deck that can, against any deck, win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn.
For example, Cabal Therapy + Swamp x4 is illegal because an opponent's deck may have duplicates of a card, but Cabal Therapy + Subterranean Hangar x4 is legal because Cabal Therapy can't be played until the third turn.
2.3. A deck may include any number of any card legal in Vintage (Type 1), with the exception of the following banned cards:
2.4. Each player plays one match, consisting of two games, against each other player. Each player is the starting player once per match. Results assume optimal play and perfect information (a player that can't win or draw plays to not lose for as many turns as possible).
2.5. Points determine tournament standings. Players are ranked, first to last, in order of decreasing number of points.
2.5a. For each match, a player earns 3 points per game win and 1 point per drawn game. However, a player that wins one game and loses the other earns only 2 points.
2.5b. A table of match results is posted each round. Its rows represent players and its columns represent opponents. Match results reflect the combined result of both games played in a match; 3 is a game win, 1 a drawn game, and 0 a game loss. A player's points are listed at the end of his or her row.
2.6. The player with the most points over the course of a month becomes the Player of the Month.
Format: Block Party
Choose an Extended-legal block (Onslaught, Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ravnica, Time Spiral, Lorwyn, or Alara). At least three cards in your deck must be from the chosen block.
Please use this thread to discuss any aspect of 5CB. Also, consider a subscription to 5CB. Subscribed players who have not already submitted a deck receive a reminder PM about two days before deadline. PM me to subscribe.
And for those of you keeping track for the record books, Mogg just processed 1653 matches! (And yes, in the end it was a solo effort.)
Apparently, you were still in the running for POTM after missing a week.
Well, let that be a lesson to me in the follies of failing to submit! (Also, who's to say I'd have scored as many as 5 points even if I did? ;))

IV. Card names should be spellcheck-able against the Gatherer database.
Does Gatherer actually provide an external API? Are there any online card databases which do? The rest of the requirements I could handle, but that one looks a bit tricky to me.

It's also the least important part. My spelling's not terrible, you know. But since I have no idea how hard any of this is, I figured I'd throw in everything I could think of.
There's one thing that is rather confusing me - how do you get a 3-point result? The scoring system says
So...as far as I can see, 2 wins gets you 6 points, a win and a draw gets you 4, a win and a loss gets you 2 (because 2.5a says so), and two draws gets you 2. What am I missing? :/. Am I interpreting 2.5a wrong?
You're correct that a 3-3 result counts as two points toward the final score. I write win-loss as 3-3 to give more exact information on how the match plays out. In case someone has corrections, it's useful to see exactly where we disagree.
Changing to the find was probably dumb. But rebuff the wicked or mana tithe would only have been useful AFTER I had the planeswalker in play. I wonder if it would have helped me win any matches.
Question about the Block Party - how do you count basic lands (if you use them)? Can they be 'part' of your 3 cards from the block, or do you need to actually use 3 non basic-land cards from the block?
Question about the Block Party - how do you count basic lands (if you use them)? Can they be 'part' of your 3 cards from the block, or do you need to actually use 3 non basic-land cards from the block?
Basic lands count toward your block, as do any reprints in that block. The cards don't need to originate in the chosen block, but they do need to be part of it.
WOW, that's ALOT of work! Thanks Mogg, you're awesome!
I did alot better than I expected. I was debating whether to put in Thorn of Amethyst or Sphere of Resistance, and in the end, I went with Sphere (to which I lost like a game or two I think because I couldn't have casted Golem with sphere on table and opponent holding daze, but Thorns would have lost me other games where my opponent would have been able to cast their creatures). I went through my matches, and I tabulated some data and identified some problem cards for my deck, so when I'm building a new deck, I'll have to take these cards into account (curses you Karakas + Leyline, and Ajani :D).
You can't drop Needle on Lotus, well, technically, you can, but it just doesn't do anything. Needle says: "Activated abilities of sources with the chosen name can't be played unless they're mana abilities", and Lotus is for sure a mana ability.

Check out my pauper cube! and thanks to PurpleD @ [<--- Left Play Design <---] for making this awesome banner!
"As Pithing Needle comes into play, name a card.
Activated abilities of the named card can't be played unless they're mana abilities."
That is really impressive that you went through that many matches. Must have taken a lot of work.
I'm pretty excited about my little Stax deck that could. Heavily borrowed from the Trin Version posted in Bataleur's article. I really wanted to find a build that didn't lose to discard. God's Eye was perfect for that because it guarantees your mana and gives you a way to win if someone takes your Eater. Much better than the desert I originally submitted.
OH... what is the banned list for the special formats? Are the same cards always banned?
The banned list for this format is the same as usual. Whenever there is a change to the format, treat the format as being exactly the same as the normal format, with the exception of the specified changes. Sometimes there will be additional bannings for special rounds, but this time the banned list is the same.
9 carrion pigeons – Daze / Island / Leyline of Singularity / Karakas / Meddling Mage Didn't you once say a basic rule of 5CB is that you have to be able to do something on turn 1? Karakas and Daze definitely count, but a faster Mage would have helped.
Listed as 1-4, should be 0-6
mg needs to get stack on the table in order to tie going first, since I can bounce Eater at will. In order to get Stack to stick, he either casts it before or after attempting Chalice for 2. If before, I cast Daze. If he attempts Chalice, I Daze that and play Mage naming Stack on my next turn.
Either this was just an oversight or you were thinking that Chalice for 0 stops Daze's ACC, maybe?
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'

I could be wrong here, but I think I win on the play.
I go Workshop, Extract. He plays meddling mage - doesn't matter what he names, I kill it.
Turn 2, I play Lich's mirror. He has no plays now. I just mana burn to death, to recycle
moonglove extract, each time doing two to him.
On the play, I go Workshop, extract. He plays Lotus, Island, Transmuter. I kill Transumter with extract.
Turn two, I go Workshop, play Leveler. He dazes (if he doesn't, he loses to leveler in 2 turns). He now has no plays.
From there, I play mirror, then proceed to mana burn to death, again recycling moonglove extract for the win.
On the draw, he makes first turn Transmuter. I try moonglove extract, which he dazes (if not, see below).
Turn 2, he transmutes out the leviathan. I play lich's mirror, and let the leviathan kill me (or else mana burn to death).
When I die, I go workshop, extract, take 7 from leviathan, then play lich's mirror and sac the extract for 2 to him. I then die, either to leviathan or mana burn.
This then repeats until I win.
If he doesn't daze extract, I kill transmuter, then we're in the same situation as if I had played.
That's all I had time to look through for now, but I'm guessing you might have forgotten that I can kill myself at will with mana burn, enabling the moonglove extract recursion. Alternatively (and probably more likely) I'm missing something. But I'm trying to learn here! Am I wrong about this? If not, I'll look through the rest of my matches too.
In any case, thanks for all the work you did on this, Mogg. It was really fun and interesting.

Ironically, the thing I seemed to be forgetting was not the combo, but the fact that you can still shoot guys to good effect. Anyway, you're right on all counts.
Submitted a deck for the next 5CB. I almost submitted Ravager Affinity (without the Affinity). That seems like a deck that might be submitted by a few people.

bateleur is another person I'd like to thank.
Decklist Two
Score (Deck One – Deck Two) A-B -> C-D
1 omegaorb – Behemoth Sledge / Plains / Treetop Village / Troll Ascetic / Wooded Bastion
Bringing a variant of the classic Ascetic/Warhammer to 5CB was am interesting idea, but more of your points came from your Treetop Village!
2 Blarg – Chain of Vapor / Daze / Force Spike / Helix Pinnacle / Tropical Island
Elegant... but the problem you had here was that some threats just can't be countered, like manlands. Also, with only one way to win it's not fun getting Thoughtseized.
3 phoenix33 – Bayou / Blurred Mongoose / Mishra's Factory / Pithing Needle / Thoughtseize
That's some serious disruption - and it served you well! I wonder if Blurred Mongoose is really the best option here, though?
4 Fruan – Boseiju, Who Shelters All / City of Traitors / Dramatic Entrance / Havenwood Battleground / Progenitus
I've never seen Progenitus played in straight 5CB without using a Black Lotus before. That's impressive! Not necessarily wise, though - compare your results with deck 30...
5 diet.pepsi.drinker – Mutavault / Path to Exile / Plains / Pithing Needle / Swords to Plowshares
Good, solid control here. Was there some reason for Mutavault over the seemingly superior Mishra's Factory?
6 Lashof – Ajani Vengeant / Black Lotus / Chain of Vapor / Daze / Tundra
Excellent, innovative deck! Good mix of power and disruption. (See also deck 33.)
7 Daljo628 – Beckon Apparition / Crusade / Mistveil Plains / Plains / Raise the Alarm
Mistveil Plains is an intriguing idea, but the rest of this deck feels underpowered. Are these really White's best options?
8 darko121 – Black Lotus / Blaze / Channel / Mercadian Bazaar / Rushwood Grove
A timeless classic! Good against the unprepared. Not so good against those decks with disruption. [Or creatures. – Mogg]
9 LeadMagnet – Meddling Mage / Mox Sapphire / Nix / Swords to Plowshares / Tundra
That's a very strong control package, but with only one small threat you're a bit vulnerable to anything you can't answer.
10 jskura – Gaea's Cradle / Llanowar Elves / Pendelhaven / Slate of Ancestry / Words of Wilding
Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my! Cute, but the trouble you have here is that you lose to pretty much anything that can stop you making bears. And in 5CB there are lots of things that can stop you making bears.
11 Alpha Werewolf – Arc Blade / Coiled Tinviper / Ghitu Encampment / Mercadian Bazaar / The Rack
Did better than I was expecting, since it does look like you brought a knife to a gunfight here! Good balance of threat types, though.
12 Sinzer – Black Lotus / Forest / Sol Ring / Stuffy Doll / Words of Wilding
So there I am reading your decklist and I just know for sure the last card is going to be Guilty Conscience and then... eh?! Bears are cool. I get that. I'm just wondering if maybe there are some decks that don't want infinite bears?
13 SaumZ – Black Lotus / Daze / Inkwell Leviathan / Island / Master Transmuter
Oooh, I love Transmuter! This deck's weakness is that unless you play first it's very easily disrupted. Also, I was thinking maybe Darksteel Colossus?
14 Charm_Master3125 – Mana Tithe / Path to Exile / Rancor / Savannah / Wild Nacatl
This deck plays much too fair! Also, it hurts that you can't keep Tithe mana up the turn you cast your wild thing, because in 5CB a lot can happen in one turn.
15 No Stress – Mishra's Factory / Nether Spirit / Smallpox / Smallpox / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Clever design. The main problem here is that double Smallpox starting from turn two is a bit slow against some decks.
16 NightArcher – Foil / Isamaru, Hound of Konda / Karakas / Path to Exile / Tundra
Foil is always appealing, but I'm not convinced of your deck's capacity to actually win. Once you cast Foil you need Karakas to cast Isamaru at which point it's not ready to bounce him. Even if he lives, he's just a 2/2.
17 Generalspuddog – Black Lotus / Blinkmoth Nexus / Blinkmoth Nexus / Crucible of Worlds / Maze of Ith
[I've heard that most people would be 1/1 in Magic. Unfortunately, most people are more like me than Indiana Jones. A stronger threat would really help this deck. – Mogg]
18 Shadow Knight – Black Lotus / Blurred Mongoose / Daze / River Boa / Tropical Island
Black Lotus seems like a slightly odd choice for a deck like this. If anything messes with your Lotus, you can't resolve any threats! And unfortunately even when you can resolve your threats they're a bit on the small side against some opposition.
19 dsouthers2 – Black Lotus / Channel / Misdirection / Nullstone Gargoyle / Snakeform
Sneaky use of Snakeform/Misdirection there! Unfortunately there are more ways than a straight counterspell to disrupt your combo. Plus, Gargoyle isn't a guarantee of victory even when resolved. Still, it mostly did the job. [What was the point of Snakeform? – Mogg]
20 math_geek – Chalice of the Void / Eater of Days / Gods' Eye, Gate to the Reikai / Mishra's Workshop / Smokestack
Superb synergy! Smokestack is quite strong even when it plays fair. Here, it's devastating!
21 jordman – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Meddling Mage / Meddling Mage / Meddling Mage
A respectable attempt to break the format! Where this falls down is that your opponent only needs to stop one Lotus to stop your entire deck. If you play first there are few ways for them to do that. But if you play second...
22 stuckpixel – City of Traitors / Elspeth, Knight-Errant / Garruk Wildspeaker / Treetop Village / Wooded Bastion
On the plus side, Wooded Bastion is actually being properly used here, it can't just be replaced with a Savannah. On the minus side, you can only activate your Treetop Village by tapping it, which isn't ideal!
23 Kamiken – Black Lotus / Braids, Conjurer Adept / Eureka / Island / Progenitus
I'm impressed that you have two ways to get Progenitus into play... but the catch is that the opponent's disruption just gets aimed at your Lotus, which stops both methods at once!
24 CanadianGreenBeret – Black Lotus / Darksteel Forge / Lich's Mirror / Master Transmuter / Seat of the Synod
If this deck's plan gets enacted it's very seldom going to lose. Which leaves two problems: it's quite easy to disrupt and not losing isn't the same as winning!
25 Kotoso – Ancient Tomb / Arc Blade / Daze / Ensnaring Bridge / Volcanic Island
Nicely designed deck. It's risky only having one threat, but mostly this worked well.
26 Apex – Mishra's Workshop / Mox Jet / Sphere of Resistance / Steel Golem / The Rack
Pretty good Workshop build. Sphere caught quite a few people off guard! Mox Jet might be better as Sol Ring given you don't use the black mana for anything (because hate for zero mana spells is sometimes played), but it doesn't make a significant difference.
27 freakflag – Commandeer / Daze / Misdirection / Thallid / Tropical Island
Interesting build. Being able to stop an enemy Lotus even playing second was quite useful!
28 falcon – Dryad Arbor / Elvish Spirit Guide / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Oxidize
Committing to killing the opponent with a single 1/1 creature is a bold plan indeed! There's a lot that can go wrong here, but you did crush a few people whose threats you were able to answer.
29 dethwing – Ajani Vengeant / Argivian Find / Black Lotus / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity
Nice idea combining Karakas/Leyline and a Planeswalker. I'm slightly puzzled as to the purpose of the Argivian Find. If the opponent has a counter, surely they'll use it on the Planeswalker?
30 IBjeremy – Black Lotus / City of Traitors / Dramatic Entrance / Progenitus / Soldevi Digger
Good work fitting some recycling in alongside your Progenitus combo. A lot of players this round paid too little attention to the risk of having their Lotus countered or discarded.
31 FuriouslySleepingIdea – Crack the Earth / Gemstone Caverns / Mana Tithe / Plateau / Zealous Guardian
There is a long and honourable tradition in 5CB of trying to get good use out of Gemstone Caverns. This was a decent attempt, but as you can see from your results it still isn't quite as good as it needs to be.
32 XenophanesFX – Daze / Foil / Nether Spirit / Tropical Island / Utopia Mycon
An ingenious twist on a classic! Of course for the most part it had the same strength and weaknesses as the original. Still, a respectable performance. [Mycon instead of Thallid helped in exactly one game, when you needed to hardcast Spirit against another Foil deck. – Mogg]
33 spaghettihoop – Ajani Vengeant / Black Lotus / Chain of Vapor / Daze / Tundra
Excellent, innovative deck! Good mix of power and disruption. (See also deck 6.)
34 jonah64 – Black Lotus / Isamaru, Hound of Konda / Path to Exile / Plains / Wheel of Sun and Moon
Wheel is a good idea, but unfortunately this deck has big problems. You have only one threat, it's underpowered and you're somewhat vulnerable to most forms of disruption.
35 Dtrooper – Isamaru, Hound of Konda / Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Mana Tithe / Mox Pearl
There's some good synergy here, but Isamaru is your only threat and for all his efficiency is still only a 2/2.
36 ExplodingCow – Black Lotus / Crack the Earth / Daze / Mogg War Marshal / Volcanic Island
Good synergy between Crack and War Marshal! This deck's a bit lacking in the threat department, but disrupted the opponent's plans enough to be good for a few wins.
37 Ecophagy – Nezumi Shortfang / Swamp / Swamp / The Rack / Thoughtseize
In an odd way I'm really impressed with this deck. Because you're one card away from a very strong netdeck (replace one of those Swamps with a Mishra's Factory), which suggests that you reinvented this archetype from scratch, If so, nice work! (PS. This works better with a Mishra's Factory in it!)
38 airza – Karakas / Leyline of Singularity / Mana Tithe / Saltcrusted Steppe / Vitu-Ghazi, the City-Tree
Nice design. This has a pleasing inevitability if the game goes long. The one catch is that Godot might turn up before it wins, which means if Tithe and Karakas between them don't stop the opponent's plan you're probably dead.
39 sauceofmalice – Chalice of the Void / Daze / Daze / Thallid / Tropical Island
Heroic attempt at control, but only partly successful. Chalice is good here, but things you can't stop with Daze are probably not going to be stopped by two Dazes either. Still, where you had the right tools for the job your deck did its thing.
40 Dogod – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Dramatic Entrance / Progenitus / Pyroblast
The big problem here is that nobody's going to counter Dramatic Entrance or name it with their Meddling Mages. What they're going to do is attack your Lotus. At which point Pyroblast is not castable! That aside, Entrance/Progenitus was a solid choice. [Pyroblast added one point to your total score, against Specter. – Mogg]
41 haoban3 – Brass Gnat / Llanowar Reborn / Sol Ring / Time Vault / Voltaic Key
Very much an all-or-nothing strategy. Unusual to see a pure combo deck not relying on Black Lotus, but that came at the cost of some speed in this case.
42 Some One – Dust Bowl / Mishra's Factory / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Thoughtseize / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
A very defensive variant on four-land. This did fairly well, but was perhaps a bit too cautious a choice to aspire to more.
43 slothman – Leveler / Lich's Mirror / Mishra's Workshop / Mishra's Workshop / Moonglove Extract
If one Workshop is good, two must be... Joking apart, this deck has some good ideas in it and was quite effective.
44 SANCHEX – Cenn's Tactician / Karakas / Leyline of Lifeforce / Leyline of Singularity / Pithing Needle
OK, so I can see how with only one threat you might want it to be uncounterable, but the trouble is there are other ways to deal with Tactician besides countering it. Nonetheless, a respectable performance.
45 Magus819 – Bloodhall Ooze / Karakas / Leyline of Lifeforce / Leyline of Singularity / Mountain
Wow, remarkable similarity to deck 44! Whilst Ooze has marginal advantages over Tactician, where your deck really gained was in terms of being able to protect the Ooze on the turn it was cast. You lost some power from running a second land over Pithing Needle, though.
46 Gamerz – City of Traitors / Dust Bowl / Mishra's Factory / Smokestack / Soldevi Digger
Running Smokestack without Mishra's Workshop is certainly unusual, but if the reward is access to Digger and Dust Bowl then I can see the appeal! Still, this did make the deck rather slow overall so wasn't without its drawbacks.
47 IocanePowder – Mishra's Workshop / Pithing Needle / Steel Golem / The Rack / The Rack
Classic Workshop deck. Not a bad performance.
48 JackBrace – Black Lotus / Daze / Island / Sword of the Meek / Thopter Foundry
This deck looked weak to me at first, but it works surprisingly well. The Sword/Foundry combo is particularly neat - did you bring that across from some other format?
49 gaura – Daze / Foil / Icatian Javelineers / Nether Spirit / Tundra
I can see what you were aiming for here, but the key advantage of Thallid as a threat in Foil decks is that if your opponent never gives you anything to Foil it can beat a Mishra's Factory. The problem you have here is that Javelineers on its own is very hard to win with!
50 Alivezombie16 – Anurid Scavenger / Black Lotus / Foil / Island / Misguided Rage
I would call this a timeless classic, but actually it has dated a little bit. Scavenger doesn't like to see Karakas/Leyline, which was a popular choice this round.
51 Hong Kong Phooey – Dust Bowl / Mishra's Factory / Simic Growth Chamber / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Treetop Village
It's a nice feature of this build that you can animate both manlands at once. Still, for the most part it shares its strengths and weaknesses with most 5-land builds. Not that this was a bad feature this round, with a lot of players opting for control decks.
52 Baxta – Blurred Mongoose / Eternal Witness / Isao, Enlightened Bushi / Selesnya Sanctuary / Treetop Village
This deck looks like it's expecting a fight! The funny thing is, you don't get many fights in 5CB. Usually your threat is either good enough, in which case you win, or gets answered in some way. Your Village is a good choice here, but none of the three other creatures are really adding much to the deck.
53 joedredd – Keldon Megaliths / Maze of Ith / Plateau / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth / Vindicate
This is a very original 4-land build and has some good ideas in it. Presumably Maze over The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is because you were expecting enemy manlands? Tabernacle otherwise has good synergy with Vindicate. [Disappointed that you gave up on finding a win condition that doesn't make you blow up your board. – Mogg]
54 Umbacano – Black Lotus / Daze / Progenitus / Sneak Attack / Volcanic Island
Wow - the first Progenitus deck I've seen that can recast it! The downside of this is that your Sneak Attack is a great deal more vulnerable to harm than Progenitus.
55 rambull – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Errant Ephemeron / Mystic Gate / Restore Balance
Giving yourself the option to hardcast Ephemeron has a bad effect on your manabase here. You're right that options are good, but if you cannot access your Lotus mana you're in big trouble!
56 elitemantis – Black Lotus / Foil / Fulminator Mage / Island / Nether Spirit
New variants on the classic Foil/Spirit deck are always worth looking for, but I'm not convinced this one has much to offer.
57 MozWazzu – Black Lotus / Blizzard Specter / Daze / Library of Alexandria / Underground Sea
The deck you submitted was fairly potent... and also fairly illegal. Making the opponent discard twice on turn two is, unfortunately for you, not allowed. Still a decent deck without the Thoughtseize, but obviously worth being more careful next time (or submitting earlier so that you have time to make changes before the deadline).
58 oEJo – Foil / Misdirection / Mishra's Factory / Thoughtseize / Underground Sea
Something's not quite right with this design, I suspect. The problem here is that if you cast Foil you give up all hope of winning! That's not a good thing in 5CB, because draws are simply not worth enough points to play for deliberately.
59 riddle – Daze / Island / Isochron Scepter / Mishra's Factory / Raise the Alarm
[The build was particularly good against Daze, as you could force opponents to hold back their spells whilst attacking. - Mogg]

5CB #83 Results
This week had normal format.
1 Mogg – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Empty the Warrens / Mesmeric Fiend / Yawgmoth's Will
Obviously, this wasn't the place. But I like goblins. A lot.
2 ced395 – Bloodhall Ooze / Daze / Foil / Nether Spirit / Tropical Island
My preference is still for Thallid, which is by itself the larger threat. What scenarios were you thinking of when you chose Ooze?
3 Chimpanzee – Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Black Lotus / Coercion / Rakdos, the Defiler
I'm glad to see that this deck no longer problematic. Still fine, though.
4 r_x_ – Dust Bowl / Golgari Rot Farm / Nevinyrral's Disk / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Treetop Village
Congratulations. Disk rounds five-land out well.
5 Halinn – Bitterblossom / Mishra's Factory / Path to Exile / Scrubland / Thoughtseize
I forget when, but somebody played Bitterblossom once in 5CB and did horribly, prompting a quote that "Bitterblossom sucks". It didn't win, but the faeries have at least been redeemed.
6 Shadowlord – Aura of Silence / Black Lotus / Eladamri's Vineyard / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale / Treetop Village
Aura of Silence with Eladamri's Vineyard is unusual synergy.
7 math_geek – Chalice of the Void / Eater of Days / Gods' Eye, Gate to the Reikai / Mishra's Workshop / Smokestack
Thought it lacks the first-turn Stack, I've really taken a liking to this build. It just has so many things it can do, and all of them are really powerful.
8 bateleur – Black Lotus / City of Traitors / Powder Keg / Soldevi Digger / Spiketail Drakeling
Apparently, you were still in the running for POTM after missing a week. I feel like Drakeling packs the necessary punch, but we'll see.
9 carrion pigeons – Daze / Island / Leyline of Singularity / Karakas / Meddling Mage
Didn't you once say a basic rule of 5CB is that you have to be able to do something on turn 1? Karakas and Daze definitely count, but a faster Mage would have helped.
10 GiftsTrix – Mishra's Workshop / Scalding Tongs / Sphere of Resistance / Tel-Jilad Stylus / The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
You've got some trouble with man-lands. And those troubles were exceptionally relevant this round.

Mogg is the Player of the Month for May.
0. Overview
Five Card Blind (5CB) is a weekly Magic tournament, run entirely within this forum. To compete, players submit five-card decks which are played against each other. Scoring assumes optimal play, without randomness or concealed information.
1. Game Rules
1.1. Except for the changes described in these rules, games follow the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules.
2.2. A player may not submit a deck that can, against any deck, win the game or force more than one card in an opponent's hand to change zones before an opponent's second turn.
2.6. The player with the most points over the course of a month becomes the Player of the Month.

Apparently, you were still in the running for POTM after missing a week.
Well, let that be a lesson to me in the follies of failing to submit! (Also, who's to say I'd have scored as many as 5 points even if I did? ;))
Re: software...
Does Gatherer actually provide an external API? Are there any online card databases which do? The rest of the requirements I could handle, but that one looks a bit tricky to me.
(I'm on on this site much anymore. If you want to get in touch it's probably best to email me: dom@heffalumps.org)

It's also the least important part. My spelling's not terrible, you know. But since I have no idea how hard any of this is, I figured I'd throw in everything I could think of.

Massive thanks to Mogg for doing all that, it appears a positively herculean task!
Can you explain the layout of the table?
Arc Blade is perfect here-kills many problems or goes to the head every 3 turns.
My blog.
EDIT: I've added your deck.
You're correct that a 3-3 result counts as two points toward the final score. I write win-loss as 3-3 to give more exact information on how the match plays out. In case someone has corrections, it's useful to see exactly where we disagree.

Yeah, I worked that out. The numbering system on the side confused me because I forgot about 11-19
Basic lands count toward your block, as do any reprints in that block. The cards don't need to originate in the chosen block, but they do need to be part of it.

Yes. The same cards are legal as would be legal in the block constructed format for that block, except the block banned lists (Affinity) do not apply.
The banned list for this format is the same as usual. Whenever there is a change to the format, treat the format as being exactly the same as the normal format, with the exception of the specified changes. Sometimes there will be additional bannings for special rounds, but this time the banned list is the same.

Thought it lacks the first-turn Stack, I've really taken a liking to this build. It just has so many things it can do, and all of them are really powerful.
vs.
9 carrion pigeons – Daze / Island / Leyline of Singularity / Karakas / Meddling Mage
Didn't you once say a basic rule of 5CB is that you have to be able to do something on turn 1? Karakas and Daze definitely count, but a faster Mage would have helped.

CP T1- Island, Go
MG T2- Eye, Tap 4 -->Smokestack (CP bounces Island to Daze it)
CP T2- Karakas, Go
MG T3- Untap, Tap 4 --> Chalice set at 2 (CP taps Karakas to bounce at End of turn)
CP T3- Untap, Island, Tap 2 ---> Meddling Mage naming Eater
MG T4- Scoop
Edit- or does karakas only work on creatures?
Edit x2- yes it does. My bad.
Daze's CMC is always 2.

Actually, when I made the deck, I thought it worked like that, too. It's been a while since I've played, and I completely forgot about the errata.

Oops, I do nothing first turn but get a Daze ready, I should have used Thoughtseize instead: City of Traitors / Arc Blade / Thoughtseize / Ensnaring Bridge / Badlands
Still I'm happy being in the top 50% :stupid:.
43 slothman – Leveler / Lich's Mirror / Mishra's Workshop / Mishra's Workshop / Moonglove Extract
Listed as 2-2, should be 1-4 (I believe)
I could be wrong here, but I think I win on the play.
I go Workshop, Extract. He plays meddling mage - doesn't matter what he names, I kill it.
Turn 2, I play Lich's mirror. He has no plays now. I just mana burn to death, to recycle
moonglove extract, each time doing two to him.
Also, this:
13 SaumZ – Black Lotus / Daze / Inkwell Leviathan / Island / Master Transmuter
43 slothman – Leveler / Lich's Mirror / Mishra's Workshop / Mishra's Workshop / Moonglove Extract
listed as 2-2, I get 0-6
On the play, I go Workshop, extract.
