Special Format of the Week:
Discount Week
Each player chooses a colour. All multicolour spells they play of that colour cost one coloured mana of that colour less to play.
Meddling Mage is banned this week.
AS IS TIDEHOLLOW SCULLER
Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Random effects always favour the opponent of the owner of the source (and mulligans always put the card you want least to be put in your deck into your deck).
- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.
- Participants earn 3 points if their deck wins a match, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
- The moderator may confer any number of Deck Awards. Each Deck Award is worth 10 POTM points unless otherwise specified.
Deck-Building Rules
- You may not submit a deck that can win before the opponent's first main phase.
- You may not submit a deck that can potentially force an opponent to lose a number of cards from their hand greater than the number of turns you have had.*
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- You may not include a card that is illegal in T1 (Classic). However you may include any number of restricted cards.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 5CB Banned List.
The Banned List
Ghost Quarter
Strip Mine
Wasteland
Force of Will
Trinisphere
Mycosynth Lattice
Form of the Dragon
Barren Glory
Unmask
Magus of the Moon
Cabal Therapy
Mindslaver
Word of Command
Watch List:
Anurid Scavenger
* - Timetwister is legal. Decks that can play a first turn Timetwister + Uba Mask are not. Decks that can play a first turn Timetwister without using it to 'effectively make their opponent discard their hand' are legal.
Balance is legal. Decks that can play Balance before turn 5 are not (unless they can't empty their hand fast enough).
Hymn to Tourach is legal. Decks that can play it first turn are not.
Thoughtseize is legal. Decks that can play two Thoughtseizes on turn one are not.
Due to timezones, the new deadline is approximately lunchtime SATURDAY in the States. This is because I actually need to get some work done on Mondays.
9) Error1 - 34 goblins

12) tgva8889
No deck name submitted
Plains, Cenn's Tactician, Swords to Plowshares, Leyline of Lifeforce,
Leyline of the Void
Is 6-0, should be 0-6
tgva starts with Void in play and I can only make 6 goblins one of witch is Sworded. I can only deal 11 damage attacking.
EDIT: I check WW's and found two that looked off
WhammWhamme - Hypocrazy

8) ced395 - The deck that loses a lot more than yours can
Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,

Is 6-0, should be 4-1
If ced plays he starts with Lich's Mirror. WW plays Chalice Wicth is countered, and then Leveller. He replays Lich's Mirror. You attack. He plays Triskelion. If you attack he does not block, if you smokestack first he blocks. You play smokestack. He replays Triskelion. You put a counter on the stack and attack. He sacs the Triskelion an plays the mirror. You sac a Workshop. He sacs a Workshop. You sac a Workshop. He sacs a Workshop. You sac the smokestack.

11) Chimpanzee - Huge Tracts of Land
Crucible of Worlds, Glacial Chasm, Keldon Megaliths, Mishra's Workshop,
Sandstone Needle
Is 4-1 should be 3-3
If chimp plays he starts with Megaliths+ Workshop + Crucible. You play Leveller. He plays Chasm and needle sacing a workshop. You play smokestack. He sacs and replays chasm. You add a counter. He pays 2 life and sacs Megaliths replays Megaliths + Workshop. You add a counter and sac Chalice. He pays 4 life and sacs and replays Megaliths + Workshop. You add a counter and sac both lands. He pays 6 life and sacs 3 lands. You sac everything.
I double-checked my results. This is the only one that I thought was incorrect.
15) Shogun17 - Since when do dolls have a conscience?
Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
------------
11) Chimpanzee - Huge Tracts of Land
Crucible of Worlds, Glacial Chasm, Keldon Megaliths, Mishra's Workshop,
Sandstone Needle
Listed as 2-2, should be 6-0.
He needs to lay the Chasm before my second turn. Once that happens, if he ever fails to pay the upkeep, I can ping him before he can replay it. If he does pay the upkeep, he loses to the loss of life before he can kill me with the Megaliths.

That sounds like me trying to _win_, not draw. But head hurt.

11) Chimpanzee - Huge Tracts of Land

It's your own fault for playing smokestack.
basically you have a max of four permanents in play on the draw and so does he. In order to make him sac his Mirror you need to sac your only win condition.
That sounds like me trying to _win_, not draw. But head hurt.
Basically Chasm stops Leveller and you can't make him sac enough lands to kill Crucible.
1 WhammWhamme - Chalice of the Void, Leveler, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
3-3 > 1-4
You need Karakas or Leyline gone to win. You need me to sacrifice 3 permanents (with Chalice) or 4 permanents (without Chalice). You can't do that without also sacrificing a mana source. Instead, we both end up saccing a lot of stuff and no one wins.
1 WhammWhamme - Chalice of the Void, Leveler, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack
vs.
11 Chimpanzee - Crucible of Worlds, Glacial Chasm, Keldon Megaliths, Mishra's Workshop,
Sandstone Needle
4-1 > 3-3
Chimpanzee can replay two permanents per turn, easily matching Stack. He can afford to lose a bit of life to Chasm while you have Stack active. Eventually, you're forced to sac Leveler. Chimp replays his lands and wins.
I play Tactician and grow it every turn. By the time at 1 life, I have a 6/6 Tactician that can double-block. Halinn never has more than five power and can't attack with more than two creatures.
5 dasheiff - Isochron Scepter, Lightning Helix, Mishra's Factory, Mox Jet, Thoughtseize
vs.
6 xyre - Dust Bowl, Mishra's Factory, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Thoughtseize, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
3-3 > 0-6
Dust Bowl on Factory.
5 dasheiff - Isochron Scepter, Lightning Helix, Mishra's Factory, Mox Jet, Thoughtseize
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
0-6 > 3-3
Mage gets Seized. dasheiff wins.
6 xyre - Dust Bowl, Mishra's Factory, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Thoughtseize, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
vs.
14 MT_Gunn - Sheltered Valley, Crosis's Catacombs, Chalice of the Void, Flash, Woodfall
Primus
2-2 > 3-3
Seize on Flash wins. Chalice on Seize, with two lands to pay for Primus wins.
7 GiftsTrix - Lich's Mirror, Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Epochrasite, Taiga
vs.
9 Error1 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
0-6 > 6-0
Mirror stops GT from losing. Epoch either blocks (surviving Mirror), attacks and gets blocked (surviving Mirror), or attacks and deals damage.
8 ced395 - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
vs.
9 Error1 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
0-6 > 2-2
Lich's Mirror isn't such a complex card. If ced395 would lose, instead he doesn't. Then he replays Mirror and he doesn't lose again.
8 ced395 - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
vs.
15 Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
0-6 > 1-4
Mirror. Pact Doll. Replay Mirror. Shogun17 can't Pact. If he did, he would lose to Pact on upkeep, when Mirror stopped him from winning.
9 Error1 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
vs.
12 tgva8889 - Plains, Cenn's Tactician, Swords to Plowshares, Leyline of Lifeforce,
Leyline of the Void
0-6 > 3-3
Error1 mostly has it, but on the play he can deal exactly 20 damage so he wins.
9 Error1 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
vs.
17 Parsley - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
6-0 > 2-2
See 8-9.
9 Error1 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
3-3 > 0-6
Leyline beats Warrens.
11 Chimpanzee - Crucible of Worlds, Glacial Chasm, Keldon Megaliths, Mishra's Workshop,
Sandstone Needle
vs.
15 Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
2-2 > 0-6
Chimpanzee can't always pay Cumulative Upkeep. He sacs Chasm and Doll wins before Chimp's next Main Phase.
12 tgva8889 - Plains, Cenn's Tactician, Swords to Plowshares, Leyline of Lifeforce,
Leyline of the Void
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
1-4 > 0-6
Mage names a card "as", not "when" it comes into play. This is not a triggered ability and it can't be responded to with Swords. That aside, two win conditions + Karakas beats Swords + a creature I can bounce.
14 MT_Gunn - Sheltered Valley, Crosis's Catacombs, Chalice of the Void, Flash, Woodfall
Primus
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
3-3 > 0-6
Catacombs requires that MT_Gunn return a land. He can't play Flash on my first turn. Mage names Flash and I win.
15 Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
vs.
17 Parsley - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
6-0 > 4-1
See 8-15.
17 Parsley - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
6-0 > 3-3
This is the same matchup as 8 vs. 19. Mage on Trisk. Attack to 2. Play Tactician. No counter, because Mage would kill, then Pact would kill. Make Tactician huge. EOT bounce Mage. Replay Mage on Tomb. Attack to kill. Tomb disappears, and Trisk appears. Bounce Trisk, and attack.
18 angelatheist - Black Lotus, Chimeric Idol, Smallpox, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale,
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
2-2 > 0-6
Smallpox before I play anything is pointless. Mage on Smallpox. Pay for Tabernacle and bounce Idol if animated.
He plays Flash on HIS first turn, popping the Leyline. You can't beat the 5/5 trampler from there.
8 ced395 - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
vs.
15 Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
0-6 > 1-4
Mirror. Pact Doll. Replay Mirror. Shogun17 can't Pact. If he did, he would lose to Pact on upkeep, when Mirror stopped him from winning.
...snip...
15 Shogun17 - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Stuffy Doll, Guilty Conscience, Pact of
Negation
vs.
17 Parsley - Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
6-0 > 4-1
See 8-15.
This one had me for a while too, but I forgot that while Lich's Mirror does reset his life total after the first 20 damage, the guilty/doll loop keeps on going after everything has been shuffled up and continues to drop him to 0 again.
This is correct as 6-0.
Mirror. Doll, He Pacts, I Pact. He loses, shuffles, replays Mirror. In response to the lose game, I ping, he gets reduced to 0, shuffles, he continues to get pinged down to 0 still during my upkeep before the Pact trigger ever resolves.
Mirror doesn't do anything to the stack
Once the doll damages itself on Shoguns upkeep, (in response to the pact trigger) It doesn't stop dealing damage just because the mirror keeps him from loosing. In fact if the opponent had a Runed Halo naming the doll the game would end in a tie before he has to pay for the pact.
I think the best I can do is put him at 6.
E: make 6 goblins
TGva: play Tactician
E: deal 6 (14)
E: attack, TGva: block add counter take 5 (9)
E: attack, TGva: block two add counter take 3 (6)
E: attack, TGva: block two swords 1 take 0(6)
How does this special format work with Hybrid, If I choose Green does it only reduce monogreen symbols or all Symbols with Green in them.
With Hybrid you can choose to reduce the cost or not. Look at the ruling on Edgewalker
104.3h If a cost would be reduced by an amount of mana represented by a hybrid mana symbol, the player paying that cost chooses one half of that symbol at the time the cost reduction is applied (see rule 409.1f). If a colored half is chosen, the cost is reduced by one mana of that color (or, if the cost can’t be reduced by one mana of that color, the cost is reduced by one generic mana). If a colorless half is chosen, the cost is reduced by an amount of generic mana equal to that half’s number.
Thanks for banning TIDEHOLLOW SCULLER I have been trying to find a way my deck could beat it.
Thanks for banning TIDEHOLLOW SCULLER I have been trying to find a way my deck could beat it.
That bold font is surprisingly hard to read. I was scrolling the opening post looking for where it said Tidehollow Sculler and it took me a while to find it. I associated bold with the deadline and just skipped over it.
6) xyre - Cost/Benefit
Dust Bowl, Mishra's Factory, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale,
Thoughtseize, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
8) ced395 - The deck that loses a lot more than yours can
Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
Current Result: 6-0
My Result: 3-3
ced's most important weapons are the Workshops. Xyre can't kill both of them and the other one ensures that ced can kill himself whenever he wants to. He'll mana burn himself to death so that Mirror can't be reached by Thoughtseize. If Xyre doesn't use Dust Bowl, Trisk will kill him sooner or later (remove all counters, deal 3 damage, kill yourself, replay Mirror and Trisk, etc.)
(same for 6-17 of course)
- No, b/c I can hit Workshops on his upkeep before he can drop a Lich's Mirror, meaning he will never get to cast anything. The advantage of Dust Bowl in this format is that it can preemptively hit lands before they can get used because all lands are Leylined.

Congratulations can hold for a moment (with less than 3 points between first and third, they will almost certainly change), PoTM standings are currently the same as this round's scores.
Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Timetwister, Yawgmoth's Will, Empty the Warrens
---
12) tgva8889
No deck name submitted
Plains, Cenn's Tactician, Swords to Plowshares, Leyline of Lifeforce,
Leyline of the Void
Is 6-0, should be 0-6
tgva starts with Void in play and I can only make 6 goblins one of witch is Sworded. I can only deal 11 damage attacking.
EDIT: I check WW's and found two that looked off
WhammWhamme - Hypocrazy
Chalice of the Void, Leveller, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's workshop,
Smokestack
------
8) ced395 - The deck that loses a lot more than yours can
Lich's Mirror, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's Workshop, Pact of Negation,
Triskelion
Is 6-0, should be 4-1
If ced plays he starts with Lich's Mirror. WW plays Chalice Wicth is countered, and then Leveller. He replays Lich's Mirror. You attack. He plays Triskelion. If you attack he does not block, if you smokestack first he blocks. You play smokestack. He replays Triskelion. You put a counter on the stack and attack. He sacs the Triskelion an plays the mirror. You sac a Workshop. He sacs a Workshop. You sac a Workshop. He sacs a Workshop. You sac the smokestack.
Same for #17
1) WhammWhamme - Hypocrazy
Chalice of the Void, Leveller, Mishra's Workshop, Mishra's workshop,
Smokestack
------
11) Chimpanzee - Huge Tracts of Land
Oops. Forgot LotV.
...brain hurty. I hate artifacts.
That sounds like me trying to _win_, not draw. But head hurt.
[/quote]
Oops... sorry, didn't think it through.
It's your own fault for playing smokestack.
basically you have a max of four permanents in play on the draw and so does he. In order to make him sac his Mirror you need to sac your only win condition.

3 Halinn - Mishra's Factory, Mishra's Factory, Mishra's Factory, Mishra's Factory,
Dust Bowl
vs.
19 Mogg - Cenn's Tactician, Karakas, Leyline of Singularity, Meddling Mage, Tundra
6-0 > 4-1

He plays Flash on HIS first turn, popping the Leyline. You can't beat the 5/5 trampler from there.
More later, if any.
I think the best I can do is put him at 6.
E: make 6 goblins
TGva: play Tactician
E: deal 6 (14)
E: attack, TGva: block add counter take 5 (9)
E: attack, TGva: block two add counter take 3 (6)
E: attack, TGva: block two swords 1 take 0(6)
Taking those edits into account, I get this:

Thanks for banning TIDEHOLLOW SCULLER I have been trying to find a way my deck could beat it.
That bold font is surprisingly hard to read. I was scrolling the opening post looking for where it said Tidehollow Sculler and it took me a while to find it. I associated bold with the deadline and just skipped over it.
