Interesting collection of decks this week. Foil seems to be falling out of favor as people favor attrition decks of various types over combo. Next week should be a good one.
I was very amused by Halinn's deck, which managed to pull out a few games just by virtue of having Jitte in play with Energy Chamber. Unlimited removal plus fairly rapid lifegain makes a pretty tough opponent for a lot of decks, even if neither card has any real impact on the board. This was a very entertaining example of winning by doing nothing.

Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.
- Random effects always go in their owner's opponent's favor.
- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.

The deadline for next week will be Thursday, Jan. 10 at 3PM EST. Results will be posted before the end of the following Saturday.
For bookkeeping purposes, I would appreciate it if you could alphebetize your decks. Just to save me 10 minutes. Don't bother if you're dyslexic, though.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
I think I beat JC on the play. He Channels out Plat, then I Thoughtseize. Either way he lose Pact and I Chain Angel back for the win. If he waits its like I was on the play and I just Seize a combo piece. So that should be 6-0 instead of 3-3.

Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone
To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.
These are the matches that I think need correcting. I haven’t checked 5 vs. 6 yet because it’s a Smokestack mirror.
1 jcsuperstar - Black Lotus, Channel, Disrupting Shoal, Pact of Negation, Platinum Angel vs. 5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 3-3 Should be: 0-6
I play Thorn of Amethyst. Jc either uses up his counter or lets it resolve, which prevents him from playing pact. Either way, I then play Smokestack and kill his angel.
1 jcsuperstar - Black Lotus, Channel, Disrupting Shoal, Pact of Negation, Platinum Angel vs. 9 WhammWhamme - Dread, Dust Bowl, Fireball, Maze of Ith, Molten Slagheap
Listed as: 0-6 Should be: 2-2
Jc counters Fireball and then they both just kinda sit there.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea vs. 3 Xyre - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Glowrider, Magus of the Moon, Preacher
Listed as: 3-3 Should be: 1-4
armlx Thoughtseizes Magus. Xyre plays Preacher. armlx plays Shortfang. Xyre takes Shortfang. armlx bounces Preacher eot. armlx makes Xyre discard. Xyre discards Glowrider. Xyre replays Preacher. armlx swings. Xyre takes Shortfang. Shortfang can block Factory. If Shortfang dies, Xyre takes Factory. If armlx holds off on Shortfang, Xyre takes Factory, but relinquishes control of it if armlx ever plays Shortfang.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea vs. 5 Mogg - Sol Survivor and a Stacked Deck
Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 4-1 Should be: 6-0
I ran this matchup when I was building the deck, and just figured I’d accept the loss since Sleeper did so badly when I played it. How do I draw a game?
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem vs. 5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem vs. 11 bateleur - Black Lotus, Foil, Glowrider, Island, Rishadan Cutpurse
Listed as: 6-0 Should be: 3-3 Bateleur leads with Glowrider. sorrel plays Tongs, then golem which gets countered. Glowrider stops bridge and wins the damage race.
7 Halinn - City of Traitors, Coretapper, Coretapper, Energy Chamber, Umezawa's Jitte vs. 8 Wrath_of_Dog - City of Traitors, Fire/Ice, Isochron Scepter, Isochron Scepter, Lightning Helix
Listed as: 6-0 Should be: 4-1 On the play, WoD imprints Fire/Ice. He either shoots small Myr or taps Halinn’s City during his upkeep.

Sure.
Fixed.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea vs. 3 Xyre - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Glowrider, Magus of the Moon, Preacher
Listed as: 3-3 Should be: 1-4
armlx Thoughtseizes Magus. Xyre plays Preacher. armlx plays Shortfang. Xyre takes Shortfang. armlx bounces Preacher eot. armlx makes Xyre discard. Xyre discards Glowrider. Xyre replays Preacher. armlx swings. Xyre takes Shortfang. Shortfang can block Factory. If Shortfang dies, Xyre takes Factory. If armlx holds off on Shortfang, Xyre takes Factory, but relinquishes control of it if armlx ever plays Shortfang.
Okay.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea vs. 5 Mogg - Sol Survivor and a Stacked Deck Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 4-1 Should be: 6-0
I ran this matchup when I was building the deck, and just figured I’d accept the loss since Sleeper did so badly when I played it. How do I draw a game?
Well, going first, you play Sol Ring and Thorn. armlx can't do anything on his turn but play a land. On your turn, you play Smokestack. armlx can't usefully play Chain of Vapor, so he can either Thoughtseize away your Golem, or he can play Shortfang. In the latter case, you put a counter on Smokestack and play Golem; armlx can 1) flip Shortfang and sac his Sea; you take 3 damage from Shortfang, sac workshop, and put a second counter on Stax; armlx sacs everything; you sac Stax and Ring and win, or 2) Chain away Stax and sac something, it doesn't matter what; on your turn, sac workshop and start attacking. In the former case, you lose your Golem to Thoughtseize; you put a counter on Stax; armlx sacs a land and thus cannot play Shortfang; you sac Workshop, armlx sacs his other lands (at some point he can play Chain of Vapor to delay for a turn, but it makes no difference) and neither player can win. Since armlx has a choice between losing and tying, he forces the tie. I don't see how you figure you could really lose.
In other news, Stax is even-stupidlier (stupiderly?) complicated to calculate than Mana Cache.
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem vs. 5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem vs. 11 bateleur - Black Lotus, Foil, Glowrider, Island, Rishadan Cutpurse
Listed as: 6-0 Should be: 3-3 Bateleur leads with Glowrider. sorrel plays Tongs, then golem which gets countered. Glowrider stops bridge and wins the damage race.
Fixed.
7 Halinn - City of Traitors, Coretapper, Coretapper, Energy Chamber, Umezawa's Jitte vs. 8 Wrath_of_Dog - City of Traitors, Fire/Ice, Isochron Scepter, Isochron Scepter, Lightning Helix

Yikes - Xyre metagames perfectly and doesn't even make top 4! Scary things are afoot!
Correction: I metagamed perfectly for going first. The Workshop Decks countermetagamed me, though, with their Sol Ring tech, so even the best card against them (Magus) does very little.

Sol Ring is a bit meh in my view since it takes up an entire card slot. It's only really clever in Mogg's deck where it lets him force Smokestack past his own Thorn of Amethyst and also gives him an extra thing to sac to the Smokestack afterwards.
The traditional advantage of Workshop decks is only needing one slot for mana. At the point at which they use two slots for mana they go from scary to relatively fair.
Then again, what do I know, I seem to be getting p2n3d!

[I spent the whole stupid time I was calculating results kicking myself for not running Mana Crypt.]
And I'm kicking myself for running Thorn over Sphere of Resistance, which would 3-3 the sleeper match and you, putting me at 51.
Correction:
5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
vs.
6 carrion pigeons - Mishra's Workshop, Powder Keg, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Thopter Squadron
Listed as: 3-3
Should be: 1-4
When I'm on the play, regardless of what I do, you can get out Thopter Squadron, which gives you three permanents to sacrifice, meaning that you can get a Powder Keg, whick kills Steel Golem.
Also, I still see my match vs. armlx as 0-6. I play Smokestack, he passes. I add a counter, he Chains stack eot, then he Thoughtseizes Stack. Shortfang > Steel Golem. This is why I should have run Sphere of Resistance over Thorn of Amethyst.
Sol Ring is a bit meh in my view since it takes up an entire card slot. It's only really clever in Mogg's deck where it lets him force Smokestack past his own Thorn of Amethyst and also gives him an extra thing to sac to the Smokestack afterwards.

Correct; that's why the Sol Ring is such a savage choice. The easiest way to dismantle those kinds of decks is to go straight for the manabase with cards like Magus of the Moon, but with Sol Ring, Magus isn't enough to keep them from playing most of the cards in their deck.
And I'm kicking myself for running Thorn over Sphere of Resistance, which would won the sleeper matchup and would 3-3 you, putting me at 54.

vs. armlx you don't play Smokestack. You play Thorn of Amethyst. He can't Thoughtseize on his first turn because it costs him two mana. Then on your second turn, you play Smokestack, and armlx can't bounce it and make you discard it any more.
I'll fix the other; must have had a momentary lapse in realizing that Thorn didn't affect Thopter Squadron.
The traditional advantage of Workshop decks is only needing one slot for mana. At the point at which they use two slots for mana they go from scary to relatively fair.
Smokestack is enough of a powerhouse to justify the extra mana slot, however. Don't think of it as a Workshop deck, but as a Stax deck, because Stax gets a strong benefit from having permanents to sacrifice, regardless of what they do. Workshop just incidentally happens to be the most effecient mana producer that stays in play.
So, I play Land, Ring, Thorn.
armlx plays land.
I play Smokestack (0 counters).
armlx plays land.
I add a counter (1) and play Steel Golem. At the end of my turn, armlx pays 2 to Chain Smokestack.
armlx pays 2 to Thoughtseize Smokestack.
I attack (17).
armlx plays Nezumi Shortfang.
Combining Shortfang and Factory, armlx has a huge advantage, and he easily wins the damage race.

Basic Rules
- Your deck is composed of exactly 5 cards, all of which start in your hand.
- Your deck has no sideboard.
- You don't lose as a result of not being able to draw a card.
- You can see your opponent's hand, so you can always make the best possible play.

- All other rules of magic remain unchanged, unless otherwise stated.
Tournament Rules
- All matches are played out by the moderator (participants only submit the decks).
- Tournaments are run in round-robin fashion.
- Each matchup consists of 2 games, with each deck going first once.

- You may not submit a deck that can force an opponent to lose more than 1 card from their hand per turn
- You may not submit a deck that can generate infinite (or an arbitrarily large amount of) mana on the first turn.
- You may not include a card that is illegal in T1 (Classic). However you may include any number of restricted cards.
- You may not include a card that appears on the 5CB Banned List.

1 jcsuperstar - Black Lotus, Channel, Disrupting Shoal, Pact of Negation, Platinum Angel
vs.
5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 3-3
Should be: 0-6
I play Thorn of Amethyst. Jc either uses up his counter or lets it resolve, which prevents him from playing pact. Either way, I then play Smokestack and kill his angel.
1 jcsuperstar - Black Lotus, Channel, Disrupting Shoal, Pact of Negation, Platinum Angel
vs.
9 WhammWhamme - Dread, Dust Bowl, Fireball, Maze of Ith, Molten Slagheap
Listed as: 0-6
Should be: 2-2
Jc counters Fireball and then they both just kinda sit there.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea
vs.
3 Xyre - Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Glowrider, Magus of the Moon, Preacher
Listed as: 3-3
Should be: 1-4
armlx Thoughtseizes Magus. Xyre plays Preacher. armlx plays Shortfang. Xyre takes Shortfang. armlx bounces Preacher eot. armlx makes Xyre discard. Xyre discards Glowrider. Xyre replays Preacher. armlx swings. Xyre takes Shortfang. Shortfang can block Factory. If Shortfang dies, Xyre takes Factory. If armlx holds off on Shortfang, Xyre takes Factory, but relinquishes control of it if armlx ever plays Shortfang.
2 armlx - Chain of Vapor, Mishra's Factory, Nezumi Shortfang, Thoughtseize, UndergroundSea
vs.
5 Mogg - Sol Survivor and a Stacked Deck
Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 4-1
Should be: 6-0
I ran this matchup when I was building the deck, and just figured I’d accept the loss since Sleeper did so badly when I played it. How do I draw a game?
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem
vs.
5 Mogg - Mishra's Workshop, Smokestack, Sol Ring, Steel Golem, Thorn of Amethyst
Listed as: 4-1
Should be: 3-3
Here’s what happens when I’m on the play:
M: shop, ring, thorn
S: shop, golem
M: golem
S: tongs
M: stack
S: chalice
M: 19, 1
S: sacrifice chalice
M: 18, sacrifice ring
S: sacrifice tongs
M: sacrifice shop
S: sacrifice golem
M: sacrifice thorn
S: sacrifice shop
M: sacrifice stack, win
4 sorrel - Chalice of the Void, EnsnaringBridge, Mishra's Workshop, Scalding Tongs, Steel Golem
vs.
11 bateleur - Black Lotus, Foil, Glowrider, Island, Rishadan Cutpurse
Listed as: 6-0
Should be: 3-3
Bateleur leads with Glowrider. sorrel plays Tongs, then golem which gets countered. Glowrider stops bridge and wins the damage race.
7 Halinn - City of Traitors, Coretapper, Coretapper, Energy Chamber, Umezawa's Jitte
vs.
8 Wrath_of_Dog - City of Traitors, Fire/Ice, Isochron Scepter, Isochron Scepter, Lightning Helix
Listed as: 6-0
Should be: 4-1
On the play, WoD imprints Fire/Ice. He either shoots small Myr or taps Halinn’s City during his upkeep.

Correction: I metagamed perfectly for going first. The Workshop Decks countermetagamed me, though, with their Sol Ring tech, so even the best card against them (Magus) does very little.

[I spent the whole stupid time I was calculating results kicking myself for not running Mana Crypt.]

Correct; that's why the Sol Ring is such a savage choice. The easiest way to dismantle those kinds of decks is to go straight for the manabase with cards like Magus of the Moon, but with Sol Ring, Magus isn't enough to keep them from playing most of the cards in their deck.

vs. armlx you don't play Smokestack.
Smokestack is enough of a powerhouse to justify the extra mana slot, however. Don't think of it as a Workshop deck, but as a Stax deck, because Stax gets a strong benefit from having permanents to sacrifice, regardless of what they do. Workshop just incidentally happens to be the most effecient mana producer that stays in play.

armlx plays land.
