Here's the thing, I don't hate the story we got. I was disappointed that it was obvious Nahiri was summoning Emrakul but they eventually sold me on it. I enjoyed the revenge plot, I enjoyed Sorin getting his butt handed to him and I enjoyed getting to see this conflict between a pair of old walkers even if they were depowered by the mending. That said, I think I'm more forgiving of the planeswalker centric story lines than some folks here. Nevertheless I understand the disappointment with the Innistrad storyline and a feeling of wasted potential. I had a similar feeling with Jace and Nissa's origin stories. But I digress.
All of that said however, my favorite story of the bunch is actually the Sea God because of its potential AND because it can actually slot in as a sequel to what we got this time. I like the idea of political intrigue and that story also allows for a highly intricate vampire civil war to play out with the Stromkirk deciding to use now to try and seize power with the Markov's being weakend and the Voldaren being heavily damaged by Nahiri. I can see the Stromkirk trying to summon the Sea God to try and somehow undo whatever damage was done by Emrakul but give them the edge in this new world. Edgar Markov is trying to get control of it to ensure Markov supremacy and Sorin is trying to find a way to restore balance to his precious world, perhaps bringing the sea god under his control and refocusing the world's religion. There's some great story bones in the Sea God story.
First, I think at this point it's very unlikely that anything will happen to INN as a plane besides maybe a couple mention cards in commander products but wotc has a ton of planes to "return to x" before we get a third visit. Personally, if I were wotc, I would get a group of 5-6 people, where their job is to just plan out the entire lore of a block. Obviously shown by this thread, people are getting more and more invested into different planes than before. The only time there was ever this interest was about the brothers war/mirrodin. But this is great! Maybe I have the lesser opinion, but I actually like the whole idea of the gatewatch as a driving force to the plot, but at the same time, we don't need every set about them, much less we don't always need a jace/chandra/etc. in all the standards. Additionally, if the only reason we had eldrazi on innistrad was to bring liliana onto the team, there were maaaaaaany other ways to bring her on. I do like the idea of the whole nihiri revenge plot, BUT wizards wasn't very smart about how they executed.
I think nihiri could have tracked sorin to a different plane, maybe alara because lets be honest, that place could use some uniting (if you don't know, Nicol Bolas basically brought a 5 way civil war to the plane with ajani stopping him from stealing the mana from the plane). Also, no one ever said that you had to keep the eldrazi storyline going right away...maybe keep emerakul up in the blind eternities for a couple years, let her marinade. Then you could have a better Innistrad story such as the ones up above (personally I like the witch one, they were kind of going with that in this block and they could have made it much cooler. Plus who doesn't want a reprint of burn at the stake! That combo deck was probably the coolest and most convoluted decks ever.) Anyways that's my opinion and thanks for the stories that obviously took a ton of work!
