I realize that, canonically, there is no real link between the “Lorwyn Five” and, well, Lorwyn. But since that always bugged me (and for that matter, since I doubt I can be the only one so afflicted), this thread exists for us to brainstorm some non-canon ideas of what could have happened there.
My goal is to not contradict canon – either anything which has happened yet, or which we can reasonably foresee. As such:
Nobody should directly get involved with the Lorwyn bloack's plot, contradicting the novels.
Almost nobody can meet Nissa, who has had an onscreen first meeting with Jace, and is likely to get those with the rest of the Five later.
Liliana can't meet Jace or Garruk (she has other canon first meetings with them), or Chandra (that's liable to be a plot point).
Chandra can't meet Jace.
However, Ajani has some history of meaningful offscreen interactions with people, and Garruk might well be known by other 'Walkers in the future as a Duels 2015 tie-in, so those probably remain options.
Based on that, my favorite ideas thus far are:
Garruk and Jace met and worked together on Lorwyn. It always seemed odd to me that Garruk would care about some random dude he decided to interrogate calling him a monster – we see in his backstory that he's shrugged off similar accusations before. Why was Jace different? And why did Jace have any emotional investment in the fate of Cursed Garruk, if all he knew was that this was a guy who attacked him, wanted to kill his (ill-advised) romantic interest, and then slaughtered lots of Planeswalkers? If they were actually allies first, those emotional entanglements make a good deal more sense. As for what Jace was doing on pastoral Lorwyn to begin with...
Jace made a bargain with Oona. We could give him credit and say he didn't know how bad she was then, but I'm not really inclined to – early Jace was a pretty amoral jerk (thus fueling his current cycles of brooding and guilt-fueled martyrdom). This bargain allowed him to summon loads of faeries (as most other blue mages did when Standard visited Lorwyn...), but was broken upon Oona's death – hence why he abruptly stopped doing that after Agents of Artifice.
I think this actually comes after Shards of Alara, since I recall the previews for that set referring to Ajani Vengeant as a prequel to Ajani Goldmane (does anyone else recall this? I couldn't track down the preview article). Ever the mentor, I'd like to think that Ajani met Chandra Nalaar – his understanding of both rage and Red mana could help them bond, and he could teach her some portion of his signature trick: manifesting part of your spirit externally. Hence Chandra's growing fascination with creating fire-monsters, which doesn't generally seem to be something Keralians (or Jaya) do otherwise.
Liliana would probably have been there running some errand for her demons, just as she was when she found the Chain veil and launched her actual plotline. I don't have much in the way of thoughts for how she might have met any other 'Walkers, though.
This isn't intended to be a story per say - just me wondering whether anyone else had been thinking about the Lorwyn Five actually on Lorwyn. I initially posted it in the Storyline forum for that reason, but it locked and I got directed here, as that's not the place for fanon.
If there's a more appropriate space than this, I'll gladly delete this thread and try again.
I did find it confusing. It's the problem with creative getting involved late. It would be fun doing a story where you have a bunch of near misses to each other.
