I'd definitely start submitting, though I don't have the time to help run it. Beyond getting some regular contributors, I'd contact a moderator for this subforum (I believe Talore is the guy to talk to) and see about who would handle the hosting duties
it's fairly zombified but I would contribute a piece as well, or at least attempt one ...

If anyone wants to set up any contest, new or revived, they can talk to me if they need anything from a moderation standpoint. (Though if you don't need anything like that for an idea you have, you don't have to run it by me before posting it.)
Writing is actually a lot of work for me. I would like to see how you would structure a healthy and reasonable prose section for this forum before I can say that I would contribute.
Can't start the contest without a community, can't get a community without a functioning contest...
So, as the guy who's only real job is to set it up an count the votes I feel like I should ask you guys if you have any preferences? I'm thinking prompts, maybe a round or two of flash fiction to get everyone warmed up. Doesn't have to be Magic related but it certainly can be.
Prompts are fine, but I believe they should be very abstract in what they demand. There is the proverb that creativity spurs from restrictions, but there is a fine line for when those restrictions become overbearing. A weekly flash fiction contest is totally doable and I would enjoy supporting that.
However, if we're looking at a real prose writing contest (short stories and the like), the time length should stand for one month--one month to write and submit a prose piece for said contest. Then, there should be one month allocated for voting said pieces. Then, one month back to writing.
I say this because prose pieces require more time for writing and reviewing than flash fiction or poetry. Devising a plot, adhering to restrictions, creating characters, and then refining the writing is a lot of work. Reading several prose pieces and deciding which ones you like best also takes time as prose stories tend to not be so settled in a single quick sitting and, like poetry, require some time to reflect on meaning, symbolism, and yadda yadda.
Take also in mind that not many people really frequent or participate in the creative writing subforum. Including an extra competition or two may stretch out the free time of those who are here too thin.
So if you want to factor in flexibility in time, you may want to do only flash fiction and have an annual prose writing contest every Nanowrimo or something like that with a nice prize on top for that annual contest (maybe a booster box or a grab bag of rares).
I look forward to it. I'm in a good spot right now to write in a longer form than poetry (which can be written in one or two sittings and edited in pieces), especially with school wrapping up for the summer.
