Vestdan, are you sure you fit enough joan D'Arc references in your thing?
Sigh.
I'm pissed off at myself for forgetting. 4 hours wasted I could've used tightening it up.
I stopped editing at 1:17 because ... I don't know. I started doing other things. At least it got finished somehow.
I think my story's almost 2000 words. 1000 in 2 hours. I could write 8500 in a day if I was writing a massive story at the same time for more writing practice. I bet it helps a lot!!
OH WOW. I need to change my avatar pic ... *whistle*
*edit*
Gah, I reread my story and I feel like Tom Clancy ... this is not a good sign. >< Stupid 'work' combined with not work.
Cabal, I'm sorry, but ... ugh. That's just ... I can stand the other two, really, I can. I couldn't even get myself to read yours with that title.
Oh, and after reading [or partially reading ... mainly partially] every entry, I give victory to Hellion, even though it's over 10,000 words.
Damn being too self-disparaging to choose my own story. Boo.
And ... I re-read my short story for SSCIII again. God, I love that story. Makes me feel awesome, knowing the goal of a story is attained.
Was it attained here? To a point. But not really ... yay time constraints.
[waits for VestDan's story]

Come on now; I wasn't trying to be cute. I don't insert puns on purpose unless I mention that I did! Really!
I thought someone mentioned something about more time; and VestDan granting it? (2-3 hours more...)
I can't find the post now, though if my clocks right it's been 2Hours, 50Minutes past midnight.
I've been writing ALL DAY. I'm still NOT DONE. 8500 words in one day is pretty nice, I think. but now my wordbox is broken and I know not what to do. Other than crashy mcsleep sleep.
It's broken? I think you're refering to your brain; though if it's your computer I hope you saved all the information onto a Flashdrive or Floppy. (That's what I do. Everyone should have a Flashdrive for their writing. Even if they only do a little of it. Holds lots and lots and most FD's can hold Audio and Images in addition to wordpad, wordperect, ect (other typing programs).
Good luck to everyone. Despite if you win or lose, or come in semi-second or semi-last; you should still submit it to magazines and websites, ect.
Scavenger was a bum and didn't finish his story, but that does put him in the position to judge, as someone here suggested. So... he's gonna! Heh.
you just want to torture him. I thought having to go through 50,000 words was bad...this looks like it's gonna be more, what with two 10,000 word epics.
Gaaah. I hate transferring large blocks of text from one program to another. Why, why, why must it put an extra couple of blank lines in every two lines or so?
I thought for quite a while I was going to have about 2000 words, then ran a word count at the end and it was 3000. Either I got hit by the Muse or my addled brain just lost track of what the hell was going on. I blame Mel Gibson.
Oh man, Scav and I are busy as hell judging 15 short stories at another forum, and we're almost too lazy to do just the one. I wouldn't count on his help for this one. =P
Yeah, he's judging! We're just finishing up the other contest (should be done this weekend) and then he'll give his full attention to here, I'm guessing.
I should just stop doing this contest until I have the time to write 'stories'.
I'm a bit too affected by bad reviews for my own good.
Oh well, I had someone read it over, they said it was allright. I guess I have to fire that person.

No, there's still Scavenger and Cory Herndon, the celebrity guest judge. They're both working on it, but I asked them to post all their results at once. We'll very likely see their feedback by the end of the weekend. Probably.
Wow, Cory Herndon is judging this contest? I feel honored to have a famous Magic novel writer checking out my work! By the way, I'm just about finished reading the Dissension novel, which is kinda funny. The irony of each of us reading the other's writing at the same time keeps making me laugh now!

Check out my ongoing story setting: The Timber Grove Chronicles Vampires, angels, organized crime, magic, mystery. And yes, even...talking cats. It has everything!
VestDan: Since I'm not so up to date on copyright, perhaps you could answer this question for me:
If I choose to edit my ShortStory (for anycontest) in such a way that it completely changes the storyline and characters; yet keeps the glue of the story there (so it's the same story, just told differently. Same characters, ect), can I publish that with the same name as the first story? I don't see why not; but it seems as though it's just copying what someone has already but in a different light, ala palagerizm (sp?). Even though it's my story?
Well, first rule is, you're always free to plagiarize yourself. Second of all, not quite sure I understand your question, but you are free to do with your own work as you please. Maybe clarify your situation a bit so I could comment on it further, heh
Well, first rule is, you're always free to plagiarize yourself.
That more or less is the answer I was looking for.
Another way of saying it would be: If JK Rowling rewrote Harry Potter Book 1 (it could be for any reason; but for the most part we'll assume it is to make the ending in Book 7 better), could she publish under the name Harry Potter Book 1 or would something have to be changed? (such as: Harry Potter Book 1 AGAIN, Harry Potter Book 1.5, Harry Potter Book 1: The Real Story, ect).
Well, I'm not sure on actual rules for that sort of thing, but I see no reason why she couldn't use the same title. But I also see no reasons why she WOULD. I mean, we have Star Wars Special Edition, and there's all the various reboots of comic series and etc. Then again, we have two very good and very different series both named Battlestar Galactica.
Anyway, general rule of thumb... you CAN do that, and if the story you are recycling isn't really published or whatnot, it wouldn't be a big deal; but confusing the reading public isn't usually the best idea, heh.
We'll very likely see their feedback by the end of the weekend. Probably.
Just an update--I've gotten through all the stories, but I need to edit my scores and responses so they all make sense before I post them. Dan, I'm going to hold off on yours for now (since it's ineligible, and lengthy) so I can get these other scores posted first. My apologies for the delays, things have been hoppin' at Casa de Herndon.

well, I think it's safe to say we're mostly just grateful for your feedback!
Does it normally take this long? I'm not in any hurry, it's just that this is my first contest.
Hey all-
The lateness is entirely on me -- I've gotten sidetracked horribly this month. I'm working on getting my posts together tonight, so expect them very soon. For real this time. I do solemnly swear on my complete set of Marvel Godzilla comics.
Part of the challenge for me is that I want to make sure nothing comes off as flippant criticism -- because oh yes, there will be criticism -- but as *constructive* criticism. My initial notes were entirely for myself, that's what's taking the extra time.
But let me say this: you all laid your writing out on the slab for all to see, and that takes big brass ones. Even when I criticize -- as constructively as I can -- know that I have huge respect for all y'all for allowing your work to be scrutinized in this way. In return, I'm going to talk to you writer to writer, call BS when I see it, and generally treat this as if I'm having a conversation with McGough, McDermott, Lebow, or any of the others.
Thanks for your patience, folks. Be back with you (relatively) shortly with individual Posts of Judgment.
Sigh.
