I was going to start writing now, and do a rush job, but I noticed that the deadline is the 16th of JULY. Hurrah! I thought it was the end of june ...

my mouth is full of winsome lies -
and eyes are full of death besides
but luckily the soul is wise -
it sees beyond my blindness and
forced failure makes a better guise,
so as i come again alive,
it feels like life's a decent plan
In the fog of it all, I fail to see what is being copyrighted
Perhaps dragon would like to clear up the situation as to what is being Copyrighted now? From what I understand, he's trying to copyright a Time Travel version of the story, which I don't think can be done.

I was just joking, yes it was about the Time Travel.
It's not dissimilar to trying to write a story about Jesus.

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
It's not dissimilar to trying to write a story about Jesus.

You could do that creatively.
(sung to the Transformers theme)
SPACE JESUS!
More than meets the eye!
SPACE JESUS!
Messiah in the skies!
*cough*
Seriously, though, Joan isn't the foundation of a religion or anything. She has people who are rabid fans, but she's probably actually more popular in the US now than she is in France (quite secular, they is they is). Trust me, there's a lot that can be done with Joan of Arc... as always, think outside the box.

That is the best theme song ever. Not even kidding. Sigged.

I don't buy it I mean yes, you've done a lot of research, particularly in the pop culture of Joan, but given the fact that Joan of Arc is invoked in every political event in Frances history sicne 1500 is rather remarkable.
Yes, "The Messenger" was an American movie, but it was by Luc Besson. Checking IMDB, there are more French movies and tv shows in the past 10 years than American.
She has more than a few "rabid fans." I think the fact that both De Gaulle's government and the Vichy government both invoked JoA ti be rather telling
A large part of why she's more popular in the US than France right now, is that the French far right has adopted her as a symbol for their movement. I mean, if Pat Buchannan took, say, Lincoln, and referenced/advertised with him so often that the public started to associate Abe with Buchannan's ideology, Lincoln couldn't help to lose in popularity. Further, the the States, we've had something of an upwelling of religious sentiment that helps her popularity - remember Joan of Arcadia?
Since it's my first time judging, I wanted to sweeten the pot a bit, or dump aresenic in it, depending on your point of view. First prize gets all three books in the Ravnica trilogy, autographed, shipped out at no expense to you by yours truly (but I ain't springing for next day air or anything).
Looking forward to seeing what you're all able to do with Ms. of Arc. Just don't take her to the mall, and don't let Napoleon or Socrates out of your sight.

That's a very sweet pot, and very generous. Thanks, I'd enjoy that. If I can write a story....

That is very generous. And very thought provoking.
How many stories now feel ill fated now that everyone will up their game? How many stories will now suffer deletion in hopes of something better to fill it's spot?
It's just the kind of twist a contest needs
I wanna make VD read as many stories as possible
Interesting. Perhaps if I wright a 8,000 word Time Travel story I can twist the ending so it only makes sense if you read another 8,000 word Time Travel story that takes place with the same characters but with a new point of view. Though surely that's cheating. However if it were possible, it would probably recieve a lower rating based on: why you can't understand the first story without reading the second
Suddenly I feel like writing... Not that I can win that...
If you write now, you'll truly see how good you are. Assuming the new prize(s) get you revved up.
Actually I do have a question: Is swearing in the extreme allowed in these contests? I'm assuming that any swearing is off limits due to MTGSalvation's Rules, but with this being writing (however the same goes for the Art Contest as well as far as nudity goes) I think some should be allowed for character flexibility.
However I am aware a good writer (or any writer for that matter) can make a character come to life without swearing at all. I'm just curious is all.
The official stance is that all stories must fall within the rules of MTGSalvation. But, just remember that I got 2nd with a story littered with the N-word. So, some artistic license, done well, would not only be allowed, but might improve the story.
Just remember, liberal use of the f-bomb does not a character make. It would have to exist in such a way that the judges can't imagine the story without it. And with most swear words, that's quite hard.
Edit: Though remember, I'm not a judge or a mod so my opinion isn't official at all.

THanks for puting them up, by the way. Never did get to read the last one ...

Won't you try some of Mrs. Lovett's meat pies,
Savory and sweet pies - as you'll see
You who eat pies, Mrs. Lovett's meat pies
conjure up the treat pies used to be!
-Tobias from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
May I just say that you have perhaps my favorite sig perhaps ever?
You don't truly appreciate the Murder She Wrote lady until you've seen and heard her serving up tasty pies of uncertain origin. Then you realize the reason all those murders popped up wherever she went was because it was herall along.
So I'd just like to clarify that there's nothing wrong with Joan in a different era right?

" I came to them in a flock of ravens that filled a northern sky at dawn...
Magic shall be written upon the sky by the rain but they shall not be able to read it;
Magic shall be written on the faces of the stony hills but their minds shall not be able to contain it..."
I'd type up all of my questions in one post, but I keep thinking of new ones!
Since I haven't seen it done yet (or rather haven't noticed anyone useing yet), what's the opinion of useing art in your short story?
From what I can figure:
The art can be submitted into your story, though it would have to play a small role; the role of seeing dust in the air. It's their to give a feeling and time of day. Anything more and you're adding it as a concept that needs to be understood; and understand it's place in your writing. The SSC is about wrighting and not art; therefor any art shouldn't play a role in my opinion, but I figured I'd ask before just assuming 'no'.
When the contest is over, are we allowed to post our storys in another site (not for another contest or anything but just for other people to read) or am I allowed to post it now?
There are numerous theories regarding Joan having survived the execution. One oft-cited book (I haven't read it, but every conspiracy theory seems to cite it) is "Operation Sheperdess," so you might want to check that out I'm sure there would be plenty of material there for you to make some revisionist history.
