Now, I had a poetry challenge recently to write a poem about the recent earthquakes in Asia...I approached it by thinking...What do I know about this disaster? Do I care? My last poem on natural disaster was the cynical "Katrina"...Yet, I didn't feel the same weight and such in this matter, possibly because of apathy.
Then I remembered a prominent news story I read in the disaster about a girl's only school of some sort being destroyed and two hundred fifty girls dying, and in a few seconds wrote this lighthearted little poem. Not really one of my serious or most skillful ones.
The 250
Two hundred fifty girls, oh dear!
What a tragic sight to see
Two hundred fifty girls, oh dear!
Their soft lips buried for eternity!
For the old are dead, and those who care
Are buried alongside their ashen hair
But what a tragic loss in truth
Two hundred fifty girls in their youth!
What sweethearts would've caressed their hair?
What scoundrels would've touched their skin?
So much love and foolishness now lost floating in the air.
What a tragic loss indeed, to befall!
Two hundred fifty girls left lonely
Without any hope at all
And those smiles, kisses,
Lonely bridges of love and lust and sin
Are now forever lost to man!
Mother Earth greedily drew her children within.
And let the rest remain damned!
Oh two hundred fifty girls, oh my!
What a cruel fate, by God, what sad muck!
For if love is simple symmetry
Then two hundred fifty boys are out of luck.
