[Short Story inspired by my hatred for how much horoscopes let people (including myself) control their lives]
The click of the waitress' heels echoed throughout the small downtown coffee shop, but I was used to the sound by now so I barely even noticed it. The familiar smell of burnt toast still lingered from the night before. Last night felt like an eternity ago, it felt like another life.
Gemini - If you aren't satisfied with the terms of the agreement, walk away.
Everyday I read my horoscope. I live by it. It is my guide, my purpose. I was interrupted from my thoughts by a light tap on the side of my cubicle. My boss dropped a plain white sheet of paper on top of my keyboard and left. A standard renewal of contract form. I'd signed it seemingly a thousand times before, but exactly how many times who could know. It wasn't the type of thing you paid attention to. I read the document anyway to delay having to return to the usual drudgery of my average desk job. Same pay, same small bonus. No big surprise, rather unsatisfying. I pretended to read it a couple more times then grabbed my pen to sign it since my boring job was starting to feel more entertaining. Unsatisfying. Walk away. So I did.
I burned my tongue when I took a drink of my coffee. I must not have noticed the waitress fill it up while I stared blankly out the window at the traffic passing by. How would I explain things to Mary? I doubt I could have, I don't know if I really understood it myself. She was gaining weight anyway, it would be a good time to move on. Or not? I spotted the newspaper sitting beside me. I opened it up, gracefully flicked through the pages, and then stopped.
Gemini - A reluctance to say what you feel is holding you back.
The old wodden door clattered behind me as I exited the coffee shop. My steps loudly smacked the sidewalk ringing with purpose. Everyday I read my horoscope. I live by it.
