Extending the Magic Because frames and borders were made
to be transgressed!
Themes were getting more and more specialized through time, and it's time to go back to basics and revisite the basis. This time, the theme is wich I consider one of the simpler tasks, if not the simplest one: Art extension.
Your challenge:
Take any card you want and extend its original art. Yes, any card! You may add new elements in the background and/or foreground, change part of the art, etc. You may also use any kind of technique (B&W, markers, acrylics, etc.) Still, the alter must clearly depict an extension of the original art, wich should still recognizable (tournament legal from an average judge's perspective.)
Your reward:
The contest winner determined by poll will be rewarded with a digital trophy above his avatar and announced on mtgsalvation home.
More information, rules and restrictions - please read carefully!
General rules
The work you submit must be something you created for this contest and nothing you pulled from your portfolio.
If you take someone else's artwork as reference, please provide the source.
Keep in mind your entry should be work safe, i.e. no naked boobies or other stuff of that kind
Silent submission: Do not post your work here. Instead send it by pm to both adunakhor and Blackbull. All entries will be revealed when the polls are up.
When submitting your entry, please make sure your pic/scan has a width of 300 pixel. If you can`t do it, no problem, but it would help a lot to make entries more comparable.
Deadline for this contest is 30 September, 23:59 your local time.
Specific Rules:
Some points to clarify doubts (hopefuly):
* Regarding the borders, there's a missinterpretation about them: WotC has stated that the card to alter should have white or black borders. With this, they mean that the card should be tournament legal (so no Un cards -silver bordered-, nor world champion deck cards -gold bordered-) Many people has interpreted that the card should have their borders untouched to probe they originally had white or black borders, wich is false. In fact, it would be easy for a good alterist to change borders with such change passing unnoticed, so the borders themselves aren't a good proof of legality. In case of Un cards, we know that none of them were legal ever, neither had a legal print, so altering any of these to look like a regular card would be as illegal as printing a coutnerfeit. World Champion cards have a different back, while also they're signed at the front and also have a slightly different pallete.
I can safely tell that covering the borders would make the card still being legal for almost the judges (the well informed ones) as long as their original artwork still being recognizable.
* To be as legal as possible, a card should have its name; cost and supertypes/types untouched. Also, in case it's a creature, keeping P/T untouched as well. For planeswalkers, keeping the abilities and loyalty counter untouched would also be necessary, at least until we get our first textless pwker, if such thing ever happens.
* Adding new elements could be a tricky one. In case you're doubvious about a particullar extension having too much of its original artwork changed (at the point of being doubtfully legal), go and ask to some players if they could recognize wich card are you showing them from an average gamming distance. If many or almost of them can't, well, perhaps an average-minded judge would say "no", so would us.
What are you waiting for? Go and extend that beautiful art!
Now the only reason this one is a challenge is deciding which one to enter lol. I have 15 card extentions i'm working on weekly... hum... very hard choice. Btw it says it must be judge approved no question, i just finished up a jace, tms where i extended the borders, He is the same but i put the background as brainstorm, would that be legal per the rules? (i'm not saying i'm using that one just being clear on what you are asking of us) or do you just want where we matched the colors to the original card perfectly (or to the best of our abilities?) either way we should get tons of entries for this one as we all do this pretty regular :).
