For June, adunakhor proposed contestants to abandon the MtG theme for a while and to create a classical wizard/sorcerer. We have got just two entries, wich probably means our beloved community is getting a little lazy (just kidding ;))
Let's give a check at what the rules were about last month.
The challenge was:
"Paint a classical wizard, a Merlin/Gandalf sort of guy and make use of the know stereotypes with the accessories we all know, like hat, staff, beard, whatever. :old::old:
In addition, your piece should follow this guideline (here comes the artistic challenge )
- Your piece must display a foreshortening perspective: An arm or leg of the wizard is closer to the beholder and viewed at an angle that certain body parts are obscured by it. See examples here.
- Your piece must explore the use of complementary colors, meaning that the wizard will mainly be illustrated in one color and the background of the image in a less saturated complementary color. E.g the wizard is red and the background is green.
- This is not mandatory, but to spice things up a bit your piece can show how the wizard is casting a spell."
And here are the entries:
Good luck to both of you and let's the most powerful sorcerer win this battle!
Both entries accomplish the goals of the contest. My vote has to go to Zombie Shakespeare, though. His wizard looks more polished. Nice job to both entrants.
Question: Trancebam, where is the entry you promised? Our mouths were already watering, but no dish was served... Maybe I should call you NoBam from now on
Seriously, pity you didn't make it.
From both entries that were submitted, ZS's is obviously more mature in many ways. I really like how the background merges with the spell being cast, also the overall concept is very convincing.
I think what Nemean did better though is the way the foreshortened first obscures a part of the wizards body. Overall a very nice idea! I am wondering, what kind of paint did you use?
Also thanks to Bull for taking care of the poll, I am travelling and it is a pain in the xxx to write this on a tablet
Yeah, I'm working on an illustration project so my time was unfortunately divided. I was so close to being done too. I'll put it up here if I ever find the time to finish it.
Voting for ZombieShakes cuz he's awesome. Way to go, guy!
Nemean's piece is good. Much better use of foreshortening than my own. It seems like the physical size of the piece hampered the amount of detail he could put into it but the core idea is still very solid. And the creature the wizard is encountering is really cool. Reminds me of Aku from Samurai Jack of the spirits from Kazu Kibushi's Amulet graphic novels. Well done.
