Your job for this month is to create a T-Shirt logo for the Team Unknown Stars, a Magic strategy group that our very own Lesurgo belongs to. The logo needs to look professional and fit in the corner of a polo shirt (though a larger, more detailed version is certainly encouraged for this particular competition) and it needs to have some connection to the team name. The winning entry as decided by Lesurgo and other members of the team will be used on their team shirt.
Remember, since this is going to be used publicly it cannot have any copyrighted material (such as mana symbols) on it.
For more information, take a look at this thread or contact Lesurgo.
Note: There will be a vote to determine the winner for the purposes of the photoshop contest. However, the logo that actually gets used will be up to the discretion of the Team Unknown Stars.
I had a go. This design evolved quite a lot over the course of a couple of hours - the shapes in the background were originally part of an elaborate design involving the five colours of mana, and the text is quite heavily brushed. Hope you like it, however.
"Hello! I've come to serenade you. I can't play guitar. I can't play this accordion either, but I thought it'd be less obvious."

I'm wondering, when you actually use this on shirts, are you going to have it stitched onto the breast of the shirt or are you going to have it thrown on with fabric paint? Also, how detailed can you make them?
I have a design right now that may be a little too intricate for the corner of a polo depending on how big it can be and what method you're using to get it on there.

I'm not sure yet. My avenues are either go to a local shirt design company, which could be either depending on their process, or use something a little more mediocre like cafepress or zazzle. In this day and age, I'd probably lean towards fabric paint.
Intricacy is nice, although it might end up shrunk down so small that the intricate details are unnoticeable... Imagine seeing your three inch logo from five feet away when judging that. If you don't think that you would notice the intricacy, then most people probably won't either.
Sorry for all the questions, but when you're designing a logo for someone it's good to know exactly how it's going to be implemented, so here are a few more.
If you're going with cafepress (or something similar) does that mean the image would be put on a regular T? And if so, do you still want something that just fits in the corner like a business symbol, or do you want something that jumps out a little more?
The image I have can work either way, and there's a little extra jazz in the background if you're doing it with fabric paint (especially if it's a larger size). Then again, the logo itself might look more awesome stitched in.
Last question for now: Do we get to choose the color of shirt the logo should go on or do you have a specific color in mind (and if so, what color)?

It will be put in the upper right corner of a polo. The logo should be recognizable and something people will remember, but not totally obtrusive or with so many small details that people can't understand what's going on.

I'm going to try and get them done in black, but gray is a possibility as well.
Ok, well I think I'm down to minor tweaks as it already looked good on black.
Speaking of minor tweaks, do you guys have team colors? If not I'm going to use standard Magic colors.
Also, do proprietary fonts (like Magic Medieval or Matrix Bold) count as copyrighted material? I think there's a freeware clone of what I'm using right now if yes, but I'd rather use the original if that's allowed.
Team colors, no, not really. Just use whichever colors look the best. That's all I ask for.
As for fonts, I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think I'm going to get sued for using Matrix Bold in the corner of a polo shirt. And if I do... There's a swarm of people who've made their own shirts about to get sued for all they're worth.
Created in illustrator, but with the permission of Krashbot I'm entering it. Thanks, Krashbot!

"If I take death into my life, acknowledge it, and face it squarely, I will free myself from the anxiety of death and the pettiness of life - and only then will I be free to become myself." - Martin Heidegger
My entry, I tried but I rushed it to get it in before the deadline. These contest need a bit more activity now that schools started up and such:
I tried to incorporate the "one world" effect with the blue planet and smaller stars, but I went for simple instead of over complicated. I went with the green lettering to show a natural need to help others and a willing help at that.
Here's my design for this month. I have this as a psd in ridiculously high resolution (everything but the stars were done in illustrator), so I can give it to you with a transparent background and at (virtually) any size (I have the thing up to 8.5" x 11" at 300 dpi with starts and I have the rest as a vector image).
Also, to let everyone know, since this contest started late (and because I myself am entering after September 30), This contest will be open through this Sunday (October 5). I may or may not post the October contest in the interim, but I figured I'd give you guys a little extra time.
I thought that one of the earlier logos could be very good with a bit of re-working, so I touched that one up a bit. If having done so means it's not original enough for the contest, that's cool. I know it's kind of a fine line to walk between re-doing a logo in my own way and plagiarism.

I don't care if I was framed for murder if I only got a warning I would let it go.
Thanks in advance to all of the participants!

You're using a polo shirt.
And fabric paint?:confused2:
If the design is going on a polo, then it should really only be stitched.
