What Magic-card is that artwork from? I can't remember having seen it before, but it looks cool anyway - except that the text is too close to the left border...
@mazzer: As ForD said - it's too large for the contest, and otherwise it doesn't belong into this thread.
Dwarven Soldier, Fallen Empires version. I found it on Doug Schuler's website while searching for Old Fogey.
On the topic of blended art banners though, I wouldn't have them as a personal choice. I don't think I've used a single blended art banner for myself for ages - people request them though, and they're boring. Ridiculously easy, but boring.

I prefer the lasso tool with quick mask... easier to control than a brush... and can be *very* precise (and you can adjust anti-alias/feathering)... I only use brushes for rough work and bigger feathering.
If you're experimenting, give it a try.
Brushes are where it's at...
Then again, 99% of all my banners are done at 2-4x the final size and resized down later.
Dang! I never use the lasso, I meant the Polygonal Lasso - I'm simply ignoring that Paint-style lasso... - perhaps this makes more sense, eh?
*shrugs-again*
Polygonal Lasso with feathering is alright, I spose. Layer masks + brushes is still the best in my experience.
Brushes are more precise. In fact, the lasso tool is a pain unless you have the hand of a surgeon. :/
Even if I worked at 1:1, I'd still use brushes.
Agreed. I used to use the polygonal lasso tool to mark my selection, but I've found that the brushes allow for a greater amount of control and precision with just a little bit of practice. Also, working in a larger size that the finished product is a must for all of my digital work.
did i make it in time????

I do all my stuff in MS Paint anyway, so yeah.
The face was an old resize job I had lying around and I thought I might use it - I did cut out around it with fill tool in paint tho
@Topher: Uhh... Is it even possible to do drop shadows in paint?
That's 600x115...>.>

Actually, you can. Once in paint got to image--> attributes and there it will let you change the size.
i think you win

Type your text in a dark color (black), then type it again in almost the same position but in a lighter color (yellow).

Actually, you use the feather tool.
Heh.

no WONDER I got rejected from art school!
Really? I've always used layer masks.

Me too.
The feathering is an arguably faster, bu much less refined technique. Masks with brushes will always yield the best results IMO.
