We all remember Week 52. Who you supported and why is totally irrelevant. All that matters now... is who has the talent to produce the most humorous, Magic-related banner in MSPaint. This banner must be 600x100, or smaller and, must be made using MSPaint or an equal equivalent. This week is all about "t3h funnay" and the content need only be related to the game in some way - so hop to it!
Note: You can use Photoshop/GIMP/Paint Shop Pro/foobar to work on it, but you can only use tools that MSPaint has. No Filters, no layers, etc. Only the Text tool (solid colored text ONLY), drawing tools (pencil, paintbrush, airbrush, bucket, etc.), and selection tools can be used. The rule of thumb here is if MSPaint can't do it exactly the same way, it isn't valid for this contest.
"Hello! I've come to serenade you. I can't play guitar. I can't play this accordion either, but I thought it'd be less obvious."
Dylan Moran, Black Books
Here is my newest banner. I worked really hard to come up with such an original idea for this weeks contest. I sure do hope this is greatly appreciated by the community at large. [/sarcasm]
1. can it be forum-related, like, making fun of people that play magic
2. can I use normal brushes with a low hardness so they don't look jaggy like they would in MS Paint (for example, contrary to how it looks this banner/av would be impossible in MS Paint)
3. transparancy yes/no
edit: how about resizing with photoshop instead of ms paint? with ms paint it ends up looking like, what's the word, "****"
edit: this took me way too long, here's my contribution
for the zero people curious, I took craven's partially transparent serra avenger because it was the last one posted in that thread, made a transparent layer over it, traced it with the paintbrush, set it on a white background, shrunk it down, added text. I used photoshop as a shortcut, essentially; I could have done the exact same thing with MS Paint side-by-side the original image, it just would have taken forever. I'm not sure if this is my submission yet.

I don't think you should be allowed to use this as your entry. Why? because it violates the rules of the contest. If you feel that it'll take too much of your time to do in paint, then don't do it and choose something else.

I thought the point was that it could be done it paint, it would just take, you know, skill. I don't have skill.
Riight, kcw... because you obviously used the layers of photoshop for tracing (and your free-drawn stick figures are funnier)... and because the format is 600x100, not our beloved (and hopefully implemented) 450x150.
Well excuuuuuuuuuse me for not reading the original post or following the rules! Jeez you people
(Also my stick figures are boring and gimmicky, even moreso than everything else I make.)
my point is that if it turns out the same way, but one way takes half as much effort, I should be able to take the shortcut.
If you could make it look exactly the same way, would you be able to without the aid of something to trace over? I don't know.
Edit: By your logic, I should also be able to use gradients from GIMP even though pain doesn't have them, because if I spend enough time, I can draw the gradient in pixel by pixel.
May as well throw one out there myself. Notice the good old MSPaint transperancy when saved as a JPEG. I am still undecided about the red line but otherwise there is too much empty space.
In WinXP MSPaint can save as .PNG, so I hope it preserved my image quality while maintaining a reasonable filesize.
I had to run 2 copies of MSPaint at the same time to crop out artwork and resize it while not ruining my working version. I also had to do quite a bit of work with the pencil tool.
EDIT: It appears to have kept the image quality and is about 86k. Not bad, in my opinion.
EDIT 2: Almost forgot to cite my non-magic artwork: ExLax
nowhere in the rule is stated that just because it might took you ages to do something in Paint and minutes in Photoshop to get the same result you're not allowed to do it. Nobody cares if you have the skill to do the banner with Paint.
If kcw's banner could be made in Paint (and it could), then it's a legid entry.
Isn't that what the rule says? You can use only techniques that you would be able to in Paint. If you want a gradient, select your 1px hard brush and zoom in!
Gradients? Drop-Shadows on the Prophecy-Logo? Now that's something that can't be done in Paint. However, it is possible that the background is part of a complete banner. If so, please link to it...
I'm 98% sure that its from a MTG.com wallpaper. I'm sure that the source will be posted prior to voting.
*gasp* THAT can be done with Paint? Absolutely amazing!
Glad you like it! I could have done more if I'd have had more patience, such as a nicer border or more easily readable text. Hopefully I'll earn a couple votes on this one.

Pshaw, that's not even that hard. A simple erasing (in white) of the area around the cutouts, then just duplicate and paste the forest background a few times. Paint supports transparent cut/paste, so cutout figures are not that surprising - you just make a big white background, make your cutout by drawing in white, and then transparent-drag it over your image. The drop shadow is just black text with yellow text typed over top of it. I did similar stuff working on my first sig banner in paint. The rounded edges are a nice touch, but as you can see they lack the true transparency of a png and are just the forum background color.
As an example, this banner uses overlapping and the same drop-shadow effect:
Not that it isn't a good piece of work, its just that it's not that uber-amazing when you know how it works. It's a fine entry at any rate.

This was my first time using Paint to create a banner...
And your breakdown of how I did it is almost correct, except I used the freeform selection tool with a very steady hand to grab the parts of images that I wanted.
@ Topher: Hrmm... That would take a steady hand. I started my banner career with nothing but MSPaint, so I had to learn it inside-out and backwards to make anything decent looking. Now that I've had experience with Gimp, and know how to do even more, I bet I could make quite the hellacious banner with paint if I really tried. Of course, whatever I made, it'd take a third of the time to make the exact same thing in Gimp, so I don't see what the point would be.
Theme: I'm a riot?! You're a ****in riot!

This week should be interesting.

2) Um, I'd preferif you stick with basic 100% hardness circle, square, and callipgraphic brushes.
3) Can you do transparency in MSPaint? (fyi, the forum's bg color in Default skin, the most widely used, is F5F5FF)

You are right, and you can't make layers in paint. Now if you had done it side by side in photoshop, it would have been acceptable.

if I did it in MSPaint it would come out the exact same way; I even made sure to save it in 4 colors just so it looks awful

Weee. My greatest banner ever.
that's an MS Paint distort effect on the girl, not a ****ty source image.
This is huge due to being saved as a 24-bit bitmap. It's the only way I know of to get paint to preserve the image quality.
Source (for border, art) was the autocard image of boros guildmage.
