That's really well painted, but compositionally it's really poor. I realize the placement of the island matches up with the original art, but it would've been much more effective if you had lowered the horizon line in the frame and made the island smaller. As it is now it's visually confusing, conflicting.

Agreed. It was so well painted it took me a minute to realize what card had actually been painted...
Wow Minmin, that Zodiac Dragon is beautiful. I love dragons, and when people do alters like that on one of them it's like it makes my heart happier then when I see the first ray of sunshine on a super gloomy day.
I thought wizards was going to stop the "real world" feel. Thats why Grizzly Bears was changed to Runeclaw Bear. Diminsh is awsome but quoting Alice's Adventures in Wonderland....what? Oh well.
I just got my hands on another full art promo cancel so I thought I'd do another version of it. My first one turned out a little green after the spray so I thought I'd try to get a different color on one and see how it looked that way.
I wish I knew of a way to keep the paint from changing color (sometimes) when I spray it. Sometimes it stays exactly the same and sometimes it changes a great deal. Anyone know how to get a handle on this?
It's not the issue of the perceived size of the bird. It's the bird's actual size compared to the island. Since the island is about the same size as the bird, it pops out from underneath and creates more chaos in the center than the mood of the image calls for. Had they not overlapped, or only overlapped "a bit," it would have helped push the illusion of space. As it is, the island gets pulled forward and the bird gets pushed back and you end up with a relatively flat image.
... I still think it's great. I love the retro v. new alters that people have done on here. With this one, I looked at it, looked at a BoP in my hand and thought, "Nice try jackass, that bird was put on there digitally!" Then I realized that I was the jackass (refrain ffyouth ;)) and that I was thoroughly tricked.
@niheloim, those Plateau and Rith are so simple, but very beautiful, amazing works.
@Galspanic, haha, you know, what a cool guy you are! I really enjoy the altered cards in here, and I also think your critiques are just as cool as the arts in the thread(including the last critique on yourself haha). But seriously, even though I'm pretty new here, i can see you are the watcher of the thread. You are cool not only because you are painter but also for your critical spirit
Keep the background the same, just move it down so that the Island doesn't line up so well with the bird. Imagine a picture of you standing somewhere and 3 feet behind you is a person with a similar pose, except they are a good 12"-15" taller than you. So now we see you, but our attention is going to be on the awkward guy behind you. I think the perspective is fine even though it may not make sense at first; birds are supposed to be at all different angles and the island does the job of telling us where our point of view is. The issue isn't the objects or the way they were painted, but the arrangement of illusionary three-dimensional shapes on an actual two-dimensional surface.
That Rith came out very nice! I always have a little problem matching that soft forrest of trees in the background of a lot of cards. The match there on yours is great.
If I was to alter a fauna shaman to include a vengevine, would that be considered outside help as far as tournaments go? I would ask this on another thread but I figure that you guys and gals would know best and this thread is very active.

Thanks for the help!
It's up to the head judge. It's probably okay, but you should always bring a spare one to switch it out with just in case. Just make sure you check with the head judge of any event you play the card in first to get approval, you might find that not every judge is going to be okay with it.

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm as poor as a church mouse that's just had an enormous tax bill on the very day his wife ran off with another mouse, taking all the cheese, i would like to commission a playset of tropics..

That Masticore is beyond amazing, Ondal. Really, really awesome. The Wasteland, too, is a nice departure from the usual "add snow, ???, profit" Wasteland alters.
This thread is for competitive decks only. Your deck is not Grixis Control, as you said yourself. A serious decklist with shroud and counterspells belongs here, not a for fun/casual decklist with bad discard. Sorry, but your princess is in another castle.
