Has anyone ever tried to remove an alter from a card ?
I recently bought a tarmogoyf on the cheap that has been horribly altered using acrylics (only on the picture). Naturally i wan't to remove the paint without damaging the card underneath, anybody got an idea how to solve my problem ?
Post a picture and I am sure we can tell you if it's possible and if so, how to do it. It might be as simple as a toothpick and a damn paper towel.

It won't be possible unless it's foil, your best option it to re-alter it well.

I have taken entire alters off and redone them. It was the biggest pain in the butt, but I got it off well enough to feel like I was starting on a clean slate.
You are right though. Let someone with the tools sand and repaint it.

I love raw and clever cards like this one. There is way too much stock put in "how much something looks like something" and not enough in concept. Although, who am I to say anything?

If it's as bad as he says, it's probably not sealed. So fingernail/toothpick/wet finger should work just fine. If the card isn't erased, the paint comes right off. (I've done it before when I screwed up an alter...)
@Nakamura: Magic Eraser. (there's a brand of eraser called Magic Eraser, it's not a joke) Regular pink block eraser works fine as well.

I dunno about impossible. I'd recommend trying things like paint thinners and nail polish removers. Got a wasteland from a friend real cheap and removed the probably month old or longer set in sharpie that was all over it and the card looks 20 times better though it's obviously not perfect. Just use a Q-tip and nailpolish remover and rub with little pressure.

I had Christopher Moeller alter these at GP Columbus. I really love the mask. He had the coolest form of payment; Donate a card. Friday he was asking for elves and saturday it was zombies. It was absolutely amazing
Some new ones that I dont think anyones seen...big scans again.. -.-
I love that Catacombs! It's simple and a bit sloppy, but that style really looks good! When I am doing proxies like that I always try to match the original MTG font, but with the way you painted the illustration, it had to be the text you put in there. Nice!
This is a little out of the blue and slightly off topic but I wasn't sure where to post it.
a while back I bought a domain name to build a site for the altered art community.
My idea was to let artists display their work, post contact/commission info, post tutorials on how to alter cards, art supply info, time lapse photographs of alters, maybe eventually sell cards. Pretty much a community site though.
Eventually, after talking to several alter artists, I decided not to build the site for fear of wizards or actual magic artists coming after me for promoting "illigal" or copyrighted work and shut it down.
My questions are, should I take the chance and build the site for the community anyways? Does anyone know if I could be sued or anything for this kind of site? Why arent there any sites like this already?
Saw you at GP Columbus last weekend and got to take a close up look at your work. I was the guy (Nick) you met with his wife (Theresa) waiting in line at Chris Moeller's table.
Anyway, we loved your work and just wanted to let everyone on this thread who hasn't met you in real life to know that you're not only very talented, but also a great person. Wish my mom was as cool as you growing up!
Oh, and I got that playmat finished... Moeller drew a Siege-Gang on one side throwing a goblin with lightning bolts in the background and Steve Prescott drew a bad-assed rendition of Rafiq/some other knight holding his sword very angrily towards the Siege-Gang... Awesome.
I'll post it as soon as I can find my digital camera.

Awww...Poxy I've been trying to save up some cash for a few Green Lantern alters in the coming months. This is a magnificent piece and the owner should be extremely proud to have it. I know I'd love it.
Here is the latest commission. As usual the concept and decision of which art to use on what cards was from wtwlf123.
CK: great as always. Your art always has a signature shine to it that others just can't match. I really enjoy how each of the greats could do the same piece and it still come out slightly different. These are all amazing. And damn wtwlf123, your cube is beautiful. Your play group is very lucky.

I thought I had to dip it in radioactive waste then feed it to a pig for the art to come off. I appreciate the tip. Much easier than my plan.
Edit: Okay, actually, I may need to check out the Magic Eraser. My pink block-y one won't work. :\

BTW all props go out to the original artist, I am sorry that I painted over the person's name.
