@futantshadow: thanks man! next time i'll do something like what you've suggested, probably on my own card and if I have FREEEE TIME! as of now we'll just follow what our bosses would want to do on their own cards!;) thanks to you all for viewing my AVP series!
@dakes - the highborn is interesting and nicely done, but one thing I've been wondering about this type of alter (in general) is that, why extend the art full card if you aren't adding anything to the what is already there? The original art (top half) is very detailed and interesting, then the bottom half is just blurred colors. While it works on one hand, it also seems kind of pointless unless you are going to use the same style and detail of the original art for the entire piece. Know what I mean? I guess it is something to think about and perhaps try on future alters. It's like the baneslayer with the planets added to the bottom- there is good reason to remove the text box b/c something really cool is added to the card for completeness. I've seen baneslayers with the text box removed, the drapery of the angel extended and then just black for the rest of the card; it was cool but boring compared to what could be there.
Thanks for your critique. What would you suggest to paint on the bottom half? I do not see the top half as very detailed, only Kalastria and the guy near her. For me, the general style of the picture is more blurry than detailed. I wanted to get that style on the bottom half too, actually it is the ground there (where those people are standing on). Adding there some vampires or other things (in the foreground) would be nice but very hard to do - especially for me - and very time consuming. By the way, the commission was: do it full art.
This is my first alter! I wish I was as good as porxy, Yawg, and CardKitty but I know it will take time. Any help or tips would be great!
This picture was taken with my iphone so the left side didnt come out right. I aslo dont know how to do the spoiler: show.
just for the record. I actually play a lot of magic. I consider myself a player. all my decks are altered out or foiled. play lots of ptqs and starcity 5ks and have not had a problem with the judges and have not had to remove and replace cards.
but yeah. i rock.
i'm sorry you don't like me cardkitty. i'm not going to try to live up to your expectations though. you are you, and I am I. The alterd cards i sell are fully playable in a sleeve, and tournament legal.
The fact that you play Magic means nothing. Whether or not the cards you alter are legal doesn't depend on you, or your past experience with a few judges. It is up to the Head Judge at the event they are being played at, always. Some judges may allow a card while others will not; it is a discretionary decision and tournament players know that they should always have a non-altered version of the card with them in the event the Head Judge disallows the alter.
The only thing you're doing is misleading your buyers and setting someone up for disappoint or a game loss ( or worse).
Section 3.3 of the Universal Tournament Rules
Players may use otherwise-legal non-English and/or misprinted cards provided they are not using them to create an advantage by using misleading text or pictures. Official promotional textless spells are allowed in DCI-sanctioned Magic tournaments in which they would otherwise be legal. Artistic modifications are acceptable, provided that the modifications do not make the card unrecognizable or contain substantial strategic advice. The Head Judge is the final authority on acceptable cards for a tournament.

I would, just to cover your own butt. I've never had a problem with mine either, but a Judge can be having a bad day and not allow them. You don't want your customer coming back to you and saying: "YOU SAID THEY WERE LEGAL AND I GOT DQ'D!". What a mess that would be. I'd just protect yourself and post the actual rules regarding card alterations, instead of posting your own interpretation of the rule. This is the era of liability and accountability, and you don't want to falter on either front.
Someone said they couldnt see my first post so here it is again with another alter i just finished.
The leech was my first alter! I wish I was as good as porxy, Yawg, and CardKitty but I know it will take time. Any help or tips would be great!

I think having her standing in front of a bloody sacrificial altar (with or without a body) would be something with potential. This would fit the theme of the card.
@Sandra: The Jace is really nice, the tinker so-so.
@Poxy: That's a very nice trio!
@dakes: Counterbalance is one of the best I've seen.
@Burner: Too many leaves on the Nacatl. I think they're a nice idea but then you overcommited to it by covering the entire textbox. The way each leaf is more or less 'evenly' spaced from eachother in the textbox, it looks weird.
Left leg on the bottom right one o__0 Seems SUPER thin.
But all in all very nice! Very cool set
To all the alterers, isn't it cool too look at cards you need to paint and see tons of cool stuff on the table?
lol I've had a Library, a Mox Emerald and some expensive Japanese cards sitting on my table for a while now.
I dunno, I just like cool cards.
The Library alteration has been done once before.
I cannot remember by who, but I was commissioned to do one like it, and I hope I did it justice! What a good idea.
@sandrameals: very neat! synod's my favorite!
@CK: what would I say? THESE DELTAS ROCK MAN! never was a fan of manga or anime or something like these, but you inspired me to try one of these soon!great job.
@eternalburner: nice work, looking forward for more of your posts.
@yaug: I had a pretty heavy sunday...the only thing that made me smile yesterday was those disney alters! ; )
@BIGUP: how's our next PNP? how about mythological characters? THE CLASH OF THE TITANS is already coming... : )
another one for the people who enjoy looking at cards on this thread [SNIP]
also, it's on the auction site now
Are you really just going to individually post each and every card that you have for sale right now? Not that my opinion matters, but that's pretty tacky. If I recall you were also the person that posted 1 card 3 times as the eBay clock was ticking down and got an infraction for it. You are also supposed to use image tags. Your disregard for etiquette is an issue that people will say something about. Sorry, but that's the facts.
On to the art....
What Morphling said was pretty spot on; the Tinker is so-so. The main reason, as Morphling pointed out, is that the initial art is pretty dry and static. Your extension takes a very static composition and carries it all the way to the edge of the cardbaord. You missed a lot of opportunities that were there to add simple, but guiding, elements to the piece. The tan areas could have used some kind of a gradient or texture to sell the idea that it's a surface with light falling across it.
Here's what the composition looks like when diagrammed:
and
Notice how your eye is never really given a chance to go diagonally or connect any of the dots any way other than through the middle. I like a central focus as much as the next guy, but you have created a hub where your eye movement has to go through. And awkwardly enough it's not her face, or anything remotely interesting. It's one of the artifacts, but nothing of note.
I wanted to see if there was a quick fix that helped the overall design without a) taking up too much time, and b) maintaining the original image. I think this looks a lot better and it uses the oldest trick in the book: Use shadows to emphasize the light areas and to manipulate your viewer's eye.
It's by no means perfect, but it makes that dull flat wall a lot more of a "visual enabler" that a dull flat wall. I used violet, but I think any cool color would complement the subtle ochres that you already have painted. I also think that adding some kind of simple curved element would help offset the harsh perpendicular geometry of the table and "bong/*****" things that are all over that image. Those objects resonate with each other and start to take on a much more dominant role that you probably want them to. I added an oval, but that was just because in Photoshop it's easiest. My version feels pretty robotic since I used gradient tools, but with thin layers of paint I think you could achieve a similar (and way better) effect.
I could just be talking out of my ass, but I think your skills as a painter outshine your skills as a designer. Most of your work is well made, but the overall compositions of the cards feels like they need that Oomph to push them over the top.
(and if you think I am being a douche, please understand that I don't spend 30 minutes of my life to play internet douche-guy with complete strangers)
