Quick question for you artists out there. My wife alters from time to time and just recently decided to have a go at my Nimble Mongoose playset. While she was doing it, I walked in to take a look and noticed that she took the top of the snakes head and covered the Mana cost. Is this still tournament legal or do we have to uncover it now?

"Artistic modifications are acceptable in sanctioned tournaments, provided that the modifications do not make the card art unrecognizable, contain substantial strategic advice, or contain offensive images. Artistic modifications also may not obstruct or change the mana cost or name of the card. The Head Judge is the final authority on acceptable cards for a tournament."
While an FNM or other tournament at your lgs may give you the pass; I would suggest you're less likely to get an okay in more substantial events. The defining characteristics of a card being visible, easily identified, etc. are usually the first requisite to getting an okay.
While not practical for all cards, it's not a bad idea to have the altered versions you prefer as well as a plain face copy should the head judge at an event give you the thumbs down on use of the altered art. At the end of the day, the head judge makes the decision regardless of what you, I or anyone else think is okay or not okay about the alter.
Galspanic I normally despise most full body PW alterations... the legs most often just don't feel like a proper extension of the body (for many reasons).
But this is possibly the best, most cohesive job I've seen of this. Kudos, well done.
Hooo boy Iit's been a while. After looking through quite a bit of pages (at least 500 by now) I'll post some recent alters that I did. None of them are near as good as some of the recent ones though, nice to see familiar faces still posting along with new ones.
Both the elves are obviously inspired by bigup and the Wave is just my imagining of what would be extended art of the original artist.
I have a question. Buying alter arted cards such as Gaea's Cradle...
How would you recognise it's a WCD card under the paint?
Aside from scratching paint off the card, you can't really tell unless you see the back of the card. Sometimes the gold stamped player's signature comes over the text box, so if it is a borderless alter you can still tell that way.
Anyone else start painting Commander 2013 cards and find that they are covered in oil and don't take the paint at all?
Yeah, at first I thought something was wrong with my materials but then other cards I painted in the same session were fine. I found that I had to sort of double prime the cards. Maybe I was just washing off the layer of gloss?

Or, instead of making your cards thicker, just spray a layer of matte finish on top, it should take the paint then.

My first alter, I'm happy with it for about an hour and a half, wih cheap paint, and no background in painting! Definitely not gonna give up any time soon, but 99% of my cards are newer considering I just got back into magic, and was never really into it before morningtide anyways, so I've never really had cards with a more matte finish so I got this one from a guy at FNM. I need to buy the matte spray before I do any of my newer cards, but any that I do will get posted here!

Ever since at least the Tibalt dual deck (in the U.S.) I have noticed that there are noticeably more gloss layers on non-booster pack based cards. It makes the colors bolder, especially the blacks, but they they are a bit too shiny and showy compared to normal cards. They are pretty easy to pick out even if all you are looking at is the black border.

Actually, I noticed a change with the first Event Decks, back when MBS came out, then it spread to Duel decks (Ajani v. Bolas) then when M13 came out the Intro packs had joined the party. Planechase was the same as well.
Honestly, I can't figure out why they can't keep the printing technique the same as booster cards.

I primed with grey on my sol ring and shatter gang from a pre con, and i didn't have any problem. Although, they had been opened outside of sleeves for a week or two and went through a couple hours of play once i sleeved them up before painting. I did notice that they felt slightly greasy when i first opened them.

No, actually, i'm finding it pretty easy. Are you blanking the edges of your cards at all?

On precon cards it's always generally a good idea to blank out the edges.

Yes Galspanic (not altering them) but have opened 1 COMM 2013 and found the cards to be slick as all get out.
Don't like it one bit.
