Ooh ooh! Me too This style IS really fun to paint in. Cool trend, bigup!
Really cool. @ Bigup, those first two you did are awesome as well.
I'm willing to bet this becomes another one of those things that the unskilled perceive as easy to do (like borderless alters) and as a result, we'll see a lot of awful copycats. (Not the case so far though - keep em coming.)
I always thought that Quinton Hoover's old stuff with the contour lines was his best work and then he stopped doing that. It's nice to see that approach on some of the newer cards!
I couldn't agree more about Quinton Hoover's old stuff - such a great style. The contour lines also make them really easy/fun to cut for 3-D work. I just wish the art for Nameless Race were on a sweet legend instead of a terrible creature.
...and yeah, these last few alters have been sweet! Though after adunakhor's comment, the bottom-center of the art no longer looks like the back of the guy's head to me...
i dont like the "new style" at all.
makes no sense artwise.
That's fine, but instead of just saying that you don't like it, why don't you try a little harder? What don't you like about it? "Makes no sense" just makes you look like you are trolling, so why doesn't it make sense?
I like the 3d "glass effect" of these alters. I might try it, hopefully find something different so it's not the same.
But the thing is it's abstract, which is why I think some people don't like it.
I think it's really cool, but it's probably only cool on mythics and rares since the art quality of those cards are usually better for abstract art. Like I don't think you can throw it on a card like Wooded Foothills or Blightwidow or something like that, more like cards like Venser, and Titans and stuff like that. But even so I think picking the card is really specific for the alter.
I feel like painting it is a blast cause you aren't sitting there trying to match colors, you get to paint exactly what ever color you want. Which is always nice.
as for me, haven't posted in a while, but I'm working on a cool set of squad hawks so hopefully those will be up here soon when they are complete

I have one question for you all: How do you paint over token cards? If I use wet acrylic it permeates and ruins the card instanly, or at least it warps the card. Is there any reliably way to paint over them?
I think I'm going to try another card in the glass style today.
It is going to be a better card than Skith, much more iconic, and it can be played in the same EDH deck as him.
What will it be?
BigUp started it on Azusa , which i liked, shes surrounded by green glimmering stuff anyways. but all other cards, i see no need or sense to extend the image to such tentacle like form. it look very 3D and so , but i still say it makes no sense, atleast to me.
look at the blight dragon, why should some green tentacles grow out of him?
or the the timespiral? a mirrored figure with blue/white extentions?
not my thing, but i guess this thing is over allready anyways;D
It's not over, lol, you can't expect us to spit one our every hour or something.
I just put the stuff on Skith because it seemed pretty cool to me. It has a bunch of watchers on eBay, so I guess I'm not the only one that thinks so.
Sorry it isn't your style It is pretty fun to paint, though. Anything fun to do in altering appeals to me because it's my job currently and the rest of the techniques can become boring and tedious to me after a while.
I'm a fan of this "new" style of alteration; I think that it's wonderfully vibrant. That being said, I can see how it fails to work in regards to illustrative purposes, but this is the altered ART thread, so painting something purely for it's aesthetic quality seems more than fine to me

Very nice, bigup, LOVE the Ashling.
I've got another shot at it here with this Yawg Will.
Mine are a little more constructed and a little less abstract, but I want to work this at both ends.
I'll try some more abstract ones, too.
Hey guys, first off, love all your work.
I've been doing some alters on my own a little bit, I'm finally getting compliments on them in my binder, but I'm still not super-great at them. Do you have tips on color-matching? That's the thing I seem to have the hardest time with? Any tips/tricks/techniques to use when matching color?
Thanks!

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't do anything for the fun of it.
WELL, it's been a long time. So long, in fact, that my threads were retired! But it looks like I'll finally have some time to do alters again.

I'm pretty happy with the Hollow, although I think the water needs some more work.
Some great stuff being posted, as usual! I do hope that this 'latest thing' with the wavy tendrils and stuff doesn't become too prevalent, though, since there are lots of great styles out there that I'd love to see more of!
Oh, and CutBackDropTurn, I don't know too much about the tricks to color matching, but I do know that if you are using black and white to darken and lighten your colors, you should be aware that they will also make them 'duller'. Beyond that, lots of practice is the only trick I know!
Looks a bit like sperm, but other than that pretty cool

...but it does give me some very creepy associations
No offense, I find your other work outstanding and very inspiring.

The only place I could find it was this old auction. Which is a shame, since I'd have liked to see more from this guy.
