3D cards are amazing.
I read some tutorials on 3D-ing card and I start to make my own.
I practiced with goblin tokens. Then, I give a try to Gravedigger.
I use Aleene's tacky glue, x-acto with blade #11 and Pigma Brush as marker. This stuff work really well. Soon, I will post a picture of my gravedigger abacus life/token counter. (I need to find 3 inches needles before)
Have you tried using extra magic cards as spacers to fill the space on the sides?
Also do you think Stoic Angel would make a good 3d card?
Hi timebeing,
I like the foam spacing because it is simple and clean. Using the card spacers is somewhat messy because you need to glue them all together. it's also very time consuming...so I have not tried doing both together, though I have done each individually.
I do like Stoic Angel...admittedly I will probably add this to my next order for 3D cards : ) That artist (Volkan Baga) has a lot of great cards to 3D, unfortunately many of them are very expensive, such as Mox Opal and Snapcaster Mage.
@cernst: HA! Love that Tariel. That art is my lappy BG, so yeah... I dig that 3d of her. Some nice cuts you have there. Lots of little bits. I've been avoiding doing the oversized cards bc I'm afraid of the little bits that I would want to do, and seeing yours... well, its amazing. As for getting in the corners, I use Pigma Brush Pens. I have a base 6 pack and they work fine for me. I think Shazaam uses a few colors, but I don't know what type of markers/pens he uses.
@etiennesl: And those are your first batch? you have some pretty clean cuts there. Layering looks pretty good too.
@All: I've noticed something that some 3d alters do, well more like not do. Color in the outer edge of the cards. I never really noticed until I met a few other 3d alters at GP Austin and we swapped tips, ideas and showed off our work to each other. The white edges are fine on white bordered cards, but when you have a black bordered card the white is a bit distracting. If you take the time to color the edges of the inner stuff, why not the outer stuff too? It might just be minor and "nit-picky" of me, but I think coloring the outer edges makes the piece more solid.
Color palette tests; determining the best combination of colors for Mimeoplasm's unique color.
The final color palette.
Hey guys,
Above is a commission of The Mimeoplasm, which I have gotten MANY requests for. At one point I really thought I'd be buying enough of these for commissions to upset the supply and demand of the card itself : ) The buyer asked for lots of WIP photos to learn more about the 3D process, so above are a few photos that show my process for selecting the color palette. Also above is a 3D of Amulet of Kroog, a card by Margaret Organ-Keen. The center of the amulet is fully 3D, best seen by the curled tail in the second photo.
I have always really liked the art on Gravedigger. It is very cartoon-like in its execution. I think you did a great job on it. Is it just my eyes playing tricks on me, or is there a foil there in the background? I'm still waiting on cards to come in the mail for me to work on the next few commissions. I will be working my first double faced card and one for an art swap. Also, I agree with darkensaga, had my first one come out like that 'digger of yours, I would'a been soooo happy.
i am having trouble getting my layers to stay lined up when i set the project off the side to dry. I am putting a fat pack box full of cards on top of it to press it together but at some point in time, one or two layers will end up sliding off the to side thus making my edges way off. any suggestions?
I use a styrofoam glue, Hold the Foam i think is the name, would have to check when i get home. and I normally only do two or three layers at most. i was thinking part of it was i had too much weight or might be using too much glue, but jsut wasn't sure.
I switched to craft glue sticks for bottom layers because of that kind of problem, much cleaner and much easier to work with.
My new wolf token.
I'm not happy with his back leg, but I'm not sure what I could've done differently, so if you have any ideas please give input.
For any of you unaware Altered Reality Challenge #5 is posted. The theme is Valentine's Day. One of the judges is our very own, AlteredCity(Shazaam) Mr. Drew Sitte.
I only glue 2 "layers" at a time, and I use a small bead of glue. I really should take pictures of what i mean. I work like this, I glue layer 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, etc... And i repeat until I have all the cards in 2 card layers. I press the cards together by running my fingers, very tightly, on all the edges making sure to wipe away the excess that oozes out. Then I pile the cards onto each other in order and stack some weight onto them. Leave them for about 20ish minutes. I tend to work on 2 at a time so that I am working on something while I wait for the layers to dry. Now I continue the process above with the 2-card layers, then 4-card layers, all the way until I have 2 halves that come together in the end.
Now, I have tinkered with foil cards. I couldn't tell too much of a differance from it and a normal card when I cut both. Now... as for gluing. While testing with foils, the glue I use has a minor issue with holding the foil front to the back of a card. To remedy this, I use a super fine grit sand paper, lightly scuff the border and that allows it to hold a bit better. I have never done a FULL foil 3d alter, but I have incorporated them into middle layers.
That Altered Reality Challenge.... it has me interested.... now, to figure out what I will be doing with it....
This was the first one I made that I thought was good enough to keep. The lines aren't the straightest, and it could use more layers to "pop" more. The legendary side is especially amateur looking, I think. I haven't made one in several years; just got out of the habit.
@serrot_29 Ya it took some time for me to come up with an idea for the ARC, this one doesn't lend itself to 3d as well as previous ones. I hope you enter I would like more than 2 3d entries this time (even though your quality will destroy mine)
@viricide the details in the art are really clean, but the text box cuts seem speedy
@viricide the details in the art are really clean, but the text box cuts seem speedy
I don't remember the actual process in any detail, but I have a feeling that's pretty accurate. I think I got tired/cranky after spending a lot of time on the wing separating the two images and just kind of said "screw it" on the text boxes.
See, that's the thing, I do something most other 3d alterers don't ... I paint cards. I did a bit of brainstorming and I think I have an idea. It will be the craziest thing I will have ever done. It might also be the most complex..... I don't want to give too much away, as I'm still not sure if I can pull it off. I'll know for sure by tonight when I get home. I will definitely share a bit more if I am successful.
so i'm sure this question has been asked before, but how are you guys getting to pictures so big in your spoilers? everytime i try it, i either get the error box or a crappy thumbnail.

That sounds like it takes actual talent --- something I am quite short on : )

Suggestions?

The next card I'm planing to make is Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician. That is gonna be a hard 3D card to do.
EDIT: Do someone have an idea on how to layering Ib?

Depending on how confident you are with cutting:
back -> front:
goblin mob (could split this into the 3 different goblins visable)
Ib's flag and weapon hilts
arm with spyglass
body
head
other arm
Theres other details in there you can do but there's start of how I'd layer it
Good Luck!

just a little post to thanks all the people that took time to post advices and 'how to' for 3D cards on the forum.
They were quite helpful to help me start making some 3D tokens. Here is a few that I didn't give away yet. (Sorry for the size of the pictures)
And I also tried a 3D life counter for a good friend in our mtg group as a farewell gift.

There is still room for improvement, but I hope he will like it anyway.

@serrot 29:
I didn't used a foil 'digger. I think that yours eyes are fooling you. Maybe, it's the steam coming out from 'digger and the corpse.
Question:
Do foil cards are more difficult to cut through?

In the preceding pages, some propose to glue not more than 3 or 4 layers at the same time...
For me, it works well. Also, I use Aleene's tacky glue, the tackiness helps to reduce the sliding.
