My first observation was how sore the back of my neck was the next day. Good soreness though, like after a workout.
Also, the #11 tips break so fast.
Biggest challenge so far is creating curved cuts. the paper edge has a tendency to rise up when doing so, not sure if that makes sense.
I used to get a sore neck some days and not others; it took me an embarassing amount of time to realize that one of my work stations was at a good height and the other one was much lower so I had to hunch low all the time. I now have a stack of books at that station to raise the height so I don't have to hunch, and don't get much neck pain anymore.
The light duty blades do break a lot, it's true. I wish I'd kept track of how many blades I've gone through over the years, but yeah...it can be a significant expense if you change tips constantly.
I know what you mean about the raised edge. On many of my cuts I have to smooth the edge afterwards with the back of my fingernail or one of my shaping tools.
Got a couple done, cutting and coloring-wise. I just need advice on what a good glue or adhesive would be. Would regular crazy glue work?
It would probably work okay, as long as you get everything lined up perfectly. The fast drying time is what's kept me away from trying it. I use Floracraft Styrofoam glue, which actually takes longer than I'd like to dry in many cases. I'm considering sticking with that glue for layer gluing and trying Super or Krazy glue for some of my small detail stuff so I can pile on the detail pieces without having to wait so long between them.
First of all, to give the cards more of a "pop", does anyone have a certain card stock or foam to place between the cards?
Like serrot, I mostly use blank cards as spacers. I'm currently working on my first oversized card (Edric) and so I'm trying out foam for the first time. I know d.g. has been using foam for a long time so you might ask him for his thoughts - I don't know if he reads this thread much but he has a thread of his 3D cards here.

I tried crazy glue, but I'm sooooo clumsy that I kept getting cards stuck to me. So I had to go with something that had a longer drying time. I use an Elmer's Craft Glue. It looks like the paste only its significantly tackier. The full dry time is 8hrs I think, but only takes 20 mins to get a workable hold. Which, with how I work, it tends to be perfect timing.
I know the X-acto branded ones are a softer metal, but they are sharper. I tried all kinds of different off brands and have noticed that the tips last a bit longer but you they are not as sharp as the X-acto branded blades. Like Shazaam said, you WILL go through a lot of blades. My previous (current?) project has burned though two 15 blade packs, and about fifteen 5 blade packs since mid October.
I know what you mean about the raised edge. On many of my cuts I have to smooth the edge afterwards with the back of my fingernail or one of my shaping tools.
HOLY JEEBUS.... dude, you just blew mah mind. I have NO idea why I didn't think of this. Been using my shaping tools for interesting bends and such but never thought about this at all.
is that an Academy Ruins as the background for the 3-D Jhoira? cool idea using a different card since Jhoira has such a bland background

Yes, it's an Academy Ruins; it's what the buyer wanted.
Tolarian does not work (buyer requested this originally) because it uses an old format card. The newer ones have bigger art boxes and the art is slightly lower compared to older cards. What ends up happening is the border shows through and looks a bit funky. Also, it would look way better if the changed background was also 3D'd, but who is crazy enough to do that with Tolarian : ) ?

Like serrot, I mostly use blank cards as spacers. I'm currently working on my first oversized card (Edric) and so I'm trying out foam for the first time. I know d.g. has been using foam for a long time so you might ask him for his thoughts - I don't know if he reads this thread much but he has a thread of his 3D cards here.
I read this : )
I prefer foam by a longshot. When I started I used spacer cards but it got really tedious and IMO it's messy to glue everything together. Foam is really easy. Just cut strips of it, place it on each layer, peel off the backing when you're ready to connect all the layers. The only downside of the foam is that the card is less durable than it would be with spacer cards. So if someone steps on your 3D, it's probably toast. I figure it's better to not let anyone step on your stuff than it is to worry about making a 3D that can withstand it!
One of the things that I didn't like about spacer cards was that cards have a pretty wide tolerance for where the art is placed relative to the black border, and if you stack cards you see little inconsistencies. With the foam I can at least make sure that the art boxes are easily lined up and limit inconsistencies to the border of the 3d, which most people don't pay attention to. On the upside, spacers do have the ability to let you control how far each layer is from one another more granularly, but I like having all the main layers equally spaced. After doing a lot of cards I like that they all have that same spacing. Gives the cards you do a nice uniform look.
So both have their benefits, but the foam is much easier for me and fits my "thick" style of layering. I still use glue for floating layers and small details, as the foam I use is usually too thick for this. You can see an example of one of my 3Ds with foam on each layer here:
Some new 3Ds and a WIP of Wrecking Ball. In the new year I'll have some commissions of EDH generals to do. I also updated the original post to have some more info on where else you can find 3D art and tutorials.
ive been lurking on the thread and have asked a few questions several times (some of em werent answered, but its cool). i finally started to do some alters, but only on tokens. im not really confident enough to start on regular cards, much less generals. i sold my first 3d token at the local store last week and it kinda made me happy. even though it was a crappy snake token and the girl that bought it knew nothing of the game.
heres the one im most proud of right now. its a myr token that only took me about half an hour or so to do.
if any one has any tips on what types of beads to use for an abacus style card please pm me with tips. also what types of metal rods are best as im using toothpicks right now.
@All: Pardon the following wall-o-text. Apparently I'm good at building walls.
@darian_seitz: Sorry if you had questions that were unanswered. While I'm not the end-all of abacus makers, I'm kinda ok at it. As for beads, I use metal beads. Because of the abacus making, I know a bit too much about beads and beadery. To fit 10 across, you want to keep them no bigger than 3mm wide. You also want the hole to be no smaller than 1mm, which will make sense in a minute. To fit less than 10, I usually use 5 on the upper bar, you want to go no bigger than 5mm. You can go bigger, but that usually means you have have to get creative with your beading and layer depth. Now as to why you don't want to go less than 1mm opening on the beads. I use sewing needles as my rods. These, actually. These needles are longer than the card is wide, but I clip the ends to fit where I need them.
If anyone has any question, don't hesitate to PM me, email notification is on so i should get back to you as soon as i can.
Well I finished this before I read the bit about coloring in the white edges with a marker and I want to kick myself. This is the first card that I've been willing to show so far; just started this a few days ago.
All those claws and needles. x.x I'll get good at this eventually.

You got to start somewhere. You also need to change your blade more. When it gets dull it makes the edges raise more. I will also be doing Forbidden Alchemy but alas I need 15 more of them so I can UBER it out. It will probably end up being 30 levels, but I like to get every last detail in.
Some new cards I did over the holidays. I did 3-4 others, but they're not quite finished. They'll be up soon! After reading Drew's 3D Dragons article I ordered a bunch to 3D, including some Drakes and Wurms for good measure. Expect to see them in the near future, as well.
So, seems that Daarken will be at GP Austin this weekend. Lucky me. So, a while back i started a 3d card with the art of Barony Vampire. It wasn't the actual card, but one of those inserts we all love to get in packs. Well, after finding out that Daarken was probably be in attendance, I decided to finish off the card I started. I had to apply paint to the card Shazaam + klug style, only not as cool. There was some white text I covered up and covered the upper border on the background card. I don't have my camera, so phone will have to do for now. I've also got 5 or 6 more that I am working on to complete for inventory this weekend. When they are done, I will post them as well.
That white area is an erased card where Daarken's siggy will go
Well, I made one out of the normal Barony Vamp that I will be giving to daarken. I will also be making one of Viridian Revel for rk post, but am awaiting 6 more copies. So, outside of the big Vamp for me and the 2 for the artists, I have 4 that I will be pushing at the GP. If you wanna see crappy phone pics of them click the link "cutted mah cards" in my sig. should be the first, i dunno, 15 images. I made all but the Revel (and cutting the big vamp) in 3 days. As for the big Vamp, that is the original frame it was on and i believe it came in packs leading up to M11. Don't know which specifically. Same goes for the Sunblast Angel in those Images. It came off of the pack insert thingies as well.
Gah. Still getting over the atrocities that were my weekend. Did terrible in the GP in more ways than one. Working on getting a few commissions started, but I still have all the 3d cards I brought with me. Also met some peeps that do this, Jeff and Brandon as well as a few others, but I did not catch thier names. Sorry, memory of a goldfish. Due to lack of rest, I was unable to complete the Viridian Revel for Mr. Post, but I did spend waaaaay too much time around his and Daarken's table. In any case, off to the pictures!
His wife was actually quite jealous of the fact that he got one and she didn't. So we have agreed (and will work out the details soon) to do an art swap. I'm sooooo damn giddy.
Damnit. I didn't realize until I uploaded these things that there is bit of fuzz or something on it. Oh well.
I bent and curved so many of her parts that her alignment was a bit off. That and I was in a rush. Learn from me, don't do these things in a rush. Unless of course you want to make a few for a GP or something.
This is the second one I have done, I think. In any case, I wanted to push my self to my limits (brink of sanity) and did each plate on his back and head as differant pieces. I accomplished this but it caused the art to be longer than expected, thus the double ear there. I think it was worth it as the plates just look so damn cool in real life.
This weekend, the worst and best ideas for 3d life counters were said. The best I'll hold on to as it is a possible commission piece. The worst being... Liliana of the Veil! Just using 2 of these is more than I charge (using dealer prices here), and the dude suggested using 6! If this happens, I will sooo be taking pictures of the entire process. Also... I need some damn business cards.... *sigh* Been trying to avoid that. ~29
@Draco-lupuS: haha, Raging Mountain... I like the idea there of actually mixing the 2 arts together like that. Imma hafta see if I have some cards that I can do like that. *scampers off to secret lair*
@all: also, if anyone has some hellkite hatchlings (foils would be nice) you don't want LMK via pm. Looking to get my hands on about 10 of them for a "special project".
Been lurking on here for a while and finally got around to doing some of my own. check them out and let me know what you think. sorry bout the bad pics, they really don't do them justice.
