Hello everyone. I've been lurking this thread for about 6 months, and finally decided to post a few of the 3D cards I've tried. I made some lands and a Siege Wurm that I didn't like, and a few other random commons and uncommons. These are the first ones I figure were worth putting here at all, and any advice would be great. I'm working on another one, and my edging and border coloring is getting better. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera at the moment, so all I have here are scanned images.
@Chry Things like smoke and fog seem pretty hard to deal with. I think selecting a card with art that has good potential in one of the most important aspects. It's hard to tell from these scans, but I bet you could add some more layers to these cards to get more depth and play up the 3D effect. Just us a bunch of extra lands or whatever you have laying around that you don't care about. But make sure you don't just use the outside card frame as spacer — you'll need some layers of cardboard behind the art that you want to stand out as well so it has some support. Do you have a cell phone you could snap some pics with?
I haven't posted anything for a bit, so I thought I'd do that. I recently worked with Klug to make a combination painted/3D alter of Melira, Sylvok Outcast. Also attached is the Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur I did as part of the Guru Praetor cycle and the Squee, Festering Goblin I did for the GatheringMagic Altered Reality Challenge #3.
The 4th Altered Reality Challenge is up today. This one wants alterers to do winterized versions of cards. I won't have time to enter but hopefully other 3D artists will. Anyone have good ideas for 3D ways to winterize cards?
I also have an article up today where I show my process for making an abacus life counter. It probably doesn't differ much from what most of you do for yours, then again I'm not sure what others do so I could be way off on that.
I started making 3D alters a little while ago. Here is some of my handiwork. this thread is very inspiring and you guys are awesome at this stuff.
My EDH General
The more I make these, the better i get. I'm trying to figure out all the little tricks to doing these better by reading past posts. They help alot.
Some ppl that I know have asked about EDH Generals in 3d form. I think if something happens to the general to make it leave the Battlefield, others have decided that you would need a flat General card as well for these instances. That way it looks no different than any other card int he deck.
Love your work Shazaam. You should post your Momir and Wort here as well. Make it a gallery of sorts so we can share our work. I've been doing this for a couple of years but haven't made too many 3d cards. Most of what I had made sold @ the Houston RoE Prerelease. So I'll be working on some more here in the next few weeks, hopefully.
Now, onto my works (sorry about image sizes in advance):
This was a commissioned piece for HomelandsRules
This was taken before I glued the background onto it. I may do one with the background missing as i like the way it looks.
My first attempt at a 3-d life counter. Couldn't find any needles long enough for the abacus, but I like how the bridging looks. I might try another with that and see if I can make it a little more polished.
I also need to give it one more once-over with a sharpie, see if I can get rid of some of the random whitespots.
Here's the last couple 3D alters I've done. The Marhault Elsdragon was given away as part of a Pauper EDH Deckbuilding contest, and the Zedruu the Greathearted was for Angry? Apples!!, who also has Child of Alara, Sygg, River Cutthroat, and Rith, the Awakener by me.

Another beautiful card for my EDH collection. Even better in person. I look forward to continuing work with you in the future. Thanks!
So when I first started playing MTG mother had just taken a break from doing her arts and crafts because life got busy. However I remembered that she made things she called "3D paper sculptures" and asked her if she would make me a life counter. She did.
Its slightly similar to d.g's work I know, which I showed her recently. She said she'll try a few more when she has some time again.
awesome job. i'm sure you and her can turn this into a mini business if you have a playgroup who'se interested
let alone the rest of MTGS who is.

First of, LOVE your work. I joined the forums just because of that. Now, I was wondering if you have done any of the life counter versions of 3d cards like this:
I've just started getting into 3D magic cards, it's a calming activity. I've worked on a couple lands so card just to get some beginner practice, will take some pictures soon to post.
I do have some beginner questions if anyone's willing to help out.
First of all, to give the cards more of a "pop", does anyone have a certain card stock or foam to place between the cards?
Secondly, I've seen mention of markers and pens for coloring in some of the posts in here. Aside from the outside edges, what exactly do you color? If it's the inside detail edges, is it better to simply color it black/gray or to try to get colors that match the image?

Hi Sweetooth, I am glad you like the 3Ds and thanks for joining MTGS to say hi. I have not done a life counter, mostly because I just use the 3Ds as distractions during games and I prefer to write everything down. The way I layer 3Ds would also not be too conductive to the way most of the people here make the life counters (using real cards as spacers for the whole 3D). Maybe someday : )
@MysticMirei: y'know... i never considered the calming aspect of cuttin mah cards, but yes, i will have to say it is very calming. Especially when not working with a deadline. Now, as for your questions:
First of all, to give the cards more of a "pop", does anyone have a certain card stock or foam to place between the cards?
For filler I use other cards. When its a full card I use a full card with bits cut out. For small floating parts I use random scraps from old cut cards or filler bits. Since I have a bajillion lands and other jank cards, I tend to use those.

I color all edges. Inside, outside, and sometimes the "hidden" ones. The white of the card stock tends to really stand out and adding that bit of color helps hide your edges as well as giving the cut areas a cleaner look. I used to use only black on all my edges but after I got my hands on some colored markers to use, I have to say, it makes a big differance.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me, email me, whatever questions. I may not have all the answers (or the right answers), but I can definitely give some insight. ~29

Thanks for the advice! I only have black at the moment, so I'll probably stick to that for now. Save the buying of colors for when I actually start to master this stuff. And i'll definitely try the land cards as fillers for my 3D ones.
For pens, I use Pigma Brush pens. I happened to have the 6 pack that came with different colored pens. I believe Shazaam uses other colors and kinda blends them. But I'm not 100% sure. We all have different methods to our madness. Find what you like and work at it. Post images, I'm curious to see what you create. Good or bad, you can only get better. I'm not the best, but I'm constantly learning (aka being skool'd by Shazaam).
Just completed my first attempt (other than my "plains lightning" circa 1997, wish i had a pic :))
My first observation was how sore the back of my neck was the next day. Good soreness though, like after a workout.
Also, the #11 tips break so fast.
Biggest challenge so far is creating curved cuts. the paper edge has a tendency to rise up when doing so, not sure if that makes sense.
I used about 12 or so spacers. I felt like a badass the first time I completed all four cuts on the spacer, lifted it up and had the picture just fall out without any corner snags
