art, mana symbol, text, everything meticulously raised.
I had debated trying this (minus the text box because I like adding an abacus for functionality). However, I feel under normal wear raising the text and mana symbol may just cause them to fall apart amidst every day transport. Still, I may try it after a few dozen more cards...

"What is mana but possibility, an idea not yet given form?" - Jhoira
I have also made a few 3D cards of my own. here is a picture of one of them. just forgive the quality of the picture right now i took it with my phone.
@Lsmash: I really like the look of that blanked foil as a replacement background. Nice idea. I don't swap background myself, but I might consider trying that if I ever do Karona, False God or Jhoira of the Ghitu again.
Though he was the commander of my 2nd EDH deck, it took me forever to get around to finishing this guy:
When you look at it from an angle, it looks like the pieces are floating (it also looks nicer head on since yo can't see the layers). How did you do that?

All of the elements of the card art are bent or curved in some way in order to make 3D work with the perspective of the original art. If you look closely, you can see that the ground he's standing on is curved back and the wall behind him slopes back to stay touching the ground. Norin himself is leaning forward a bit, and his arm is pulled forward even more; when he's not in a case the torch sticks out slightly beyond the card face. I leaned his body away from the background and supported it with a cardboard pillar in the center of his back. IIRC, it's about 2mm wide and 3mm tall, and 5 or so cards thick. It's positioned in such a way that even viewed from an extreme angle it's not really visible.
You're right that it looks nicer head-on. The great thing is that during games the side perspective doesn't come up; every player's head is at least a foot above the card so even if they're across the table the upper layers hide the lower layers really well. I wanted to include that second picture anyway to help people understand what was going on in the first picture a bit better.
Between life and video games (I'm looking at you Portal 2) I've not touched any cuttin cards. So I decided to do something a bit different. I have a few of these lying around so I thought I'd start here.
This one will be mixed media. I plan on painting over the text on the front most layer and a few other places. This will be a life counter but the beads will be placed in that void on the right going vertically, not horizontally like all my other ones.
As a side note: If anyone out there has any of those insert/rules cards for Scars of Mirrodin that have Sunblast Angel on them, PM me. I want to try my hand at that one. I'm shy on my Koth's Couriers and Bloodthrone Vamps so those will have to wait a bit.
Side note #2: How the hell do you blank a foil card?!!! Been destroying a few of them trying to figure this one out.
A very tricky one, here. Making the energy swirls intertwine nicely was tough, but I was happy with the result. I had to/got to buy a new pen because I didn't have a light purple and I was afraid that any other color would interfere with the blending of the swirls.
Yes, that's me justifying spending $5 on a pen I'll almost never use.
It looks like in some of these photos that you managed to get rid of a foreground subject as it exists in the background. For example, the men in the yavimaya scion above clearly occupy their appropriate layer of depth, but you don't see them printed on the background layer. Am I just not seeing it or is there something done there that I'm not aware of?
It's widely known that [EDH] is very broken. Building a superdeck is quite easy. So what defines you as a player is [...] how you show restraint and creativity while still remaining a competitive player and a good sport.
the only problem with urza is that he is an oldwalker, so its abilities would be like:
+3: remove up to ten target permanents from the play
-2: win the game
-8: kick your opponents in the face, then win the game
starting loyalty: 100
After some consulting in this thread, picking up some ideas/techniques, and conducting a bit of practice, I present to you one of my EDH generals in 3D: Saffi Eriksdotter. Let me know what you think!
Btw, I'm not sure if the photos show it, but Saffi's body is not foil, but her headband and dagger are. A cute touch of mine
And I know the edges are pretty rough, but that's pretty fine by me.

i take it 3D cards can't be used as a General in EDH... (Unless you also have another physical copy you can use when he goes to the Library or hand.)
EDIT: Also i notice some cards have beads in the text box, what is that about?
I defintely use 3D cards as EDH generals. You are correct in thinking that for each 3D general I currently have, I also have a regular one in case it gets lost in the deck (think: hallowed burial). If that happens then my 3D just hangs out off to the side until a time when I recover the real general from the deck and recast it.
You can't imagine the awe-inspired looks I get when I bring along the big generals for social EDH (though my main play group is used to them).
Great article Shazaam! I slowed down on my card creations and also forgot to take pics of a few more I made. I did a Stone Golem that turned out great, as well as a Blight Mamba. On both of these cards I used the foam spacer to see how I liked it compared to the card spacer I had used in my previous cards. I think it really depends on the card sometimes as to which method will look better. I'll have to snag some pictures of them.

Hello guys! I'm new here but I've been a long time lurker. I've visited this thread many times over the past few years getting ideas for my own projects and just seeing the cool stuff you guys have put together.
I just finished a major (for me anyways) project that I felt I had to contribute.
Now this project I made for a friend's upcoming birthday. She's an accomplished artist in her own right and is partial to the creepier more macabre Magic art, RK Post, Brom, and Wayne England in particular. I didn't want to give her something she was already familiar with so I chose Macabre Waltz, which I think she'd like without being immediately familiar with the artist.
I started this back towards the end of March and finished it earlier this week. My goal wasn't so much to make a 3D Magic card as I've done before. I wanted to push it to the point where it was more of a diorama and I think I succeeded for the most part. My knife control isn't nearly as good as many of you here and god knows my gluing (rubber cement) is by far not the cleanest but I can't help but be proud of the result.
As I was making it, I noticed it was difficult for light to get into the deeper parts of the thing so I made the decision to add some LED lighting to VERY roughly match the lighting in the image
Diel, that is a pretty intense piece. You assess your knifework correctly, as it does look rough. But with this piece, it's not a stretch to say that it adds to the macabre nature of it. I don't even want to guess how many layers that thing is. And the incorporation of the LED is pretty clever.
As a general note, here are some shots of a Teysa, Orzhov Scion I just did as a gift for a friend. It turned out much better than my Saffi above and has actually encouraged me to do Saffi over, without using foils. The darkness of a gold foil throws off the natural brightness of gold card frames.

@Annorax: I know Shazaam seems to have luck by doing Legendary critters for people to use as thier EDH Generals. As for me, I just tend to gravitate towards art that has chicks in it.... yes, I'm THAT shallow. To find cards I tend to look through visual spoilers of the new sets or pilfer through what I get out of packs.
I did this as a christmas present for my cousin that plays an angels deck. It's an m11 plains with akroma from the pacifism card she was in. Sorry about the poor quality, I only have my laptop's webcam.

I wanna rock and roll all night... and part of every day.
This thread is a wealth of knowledge, so thanks for that. I've also been meaning to try this for a long time, and I'm finally gathering up steam to do so.
I think I want to try to make a life counter like I've seen. I've got a ton of SoA basic lands lying around, and thought I'd start with that. I was hoping you guys could give me some advice as to which art you think would be the easiest for me to get started on.
I was thinking of Mountain #242 - it seems like the layers are a little more clear than the rest (although I'm not sure about the foremost one with the rocks jutting out of the bones).
