I can't believe no one has brought up Roc of Kher Ridges. I have one of the revised edition ones, and with the lighter ink in the set there's almost no color at all in the art.
Honestly I don't like Pete Ventures or Ron Spencer, their artwork is just too busy. Rebecca Guay has some pretty ugly work as well but some of her stuff is good, I especially like the promo PtE. Also I think Chameleon Blur is pretty cool even though I can't really figure out what's going on.
I like Rebecca Guays' work, though all so often it seems to be a girl in a gown and some nice nature/setting.
Andi Rusu who did the Roc that was cited did quite a few Legends Legends that look great, that style has an old sort of textbook illustration feel that seems highly appropriate for them. Like off the top of my head Sir Eberyn? Stuff like that.
Can't believe no one has called this one out yet - maybe because of the age of the card. It was a darn good card in its' day. But the drawing is so fundamentally flawed, proportion, execution of anatomy are frigging horrific.
wow, you guys are brutal...
i think you can't compare art from 5 plus years ago to todays art... drew tucker has come a long way...
i might die trying, but someday i hope i work for wizards, so i can't really say who has the worst art only that they are lucky to be picked and maybe the directors saw something they were alone affected by... c'est la vie...
wait a tick.. i just saw the moldy demon guy...yikes...however this style is still kinda nice to have around cuz it reminds us of the good ol days... and spices up our eyeballs!
Well, I must say this thread compelled me to shake my head at some of the accusations leveled against artists who dared to think outside the canvas, but deriding Ebon Praetor? I came dangerously close to swallowing my scotch wrong at the idea that Ebon Praetor is nothing short of brilliant.
The Ebon Hand's rabbit-agent is not holding the woman's hand. It and the thrull on the right are dragging this woman, in all likelihood a merfolk, before the Praetor to be sacrificed. It fits seamlessly with what the card actually does, which in the halcyon infancy of Magic was no everyday occurence.
It is precisely this sort of uninformed opinion that makes a man pine for the time when Magic's art was abundant with different styles. Before the corporate takeover that so desperately sought to "brand" the art came about. I enjoy the direction Magic's art has taken because it is at the forefront of fantasy illustration, but not at the expense of what once thrilled the imagination. If Magic's artwork did nothing but coddle the imagination, it would be meaningless.

You've got a rat in your walls, and cheese won't solve anything.
What's wrong with summer bloom? If anything, its the closest to non-cartoony as the Foglios get.
Artwork in MTG I hate? blue mana battery and celestial prism. and the glyphs cycle (glyph of destruction). I get it, its a glyph, but why couldn't have the artist made it more dynamic? For example, glyph of destruction showing a gigantic wall falling on top of an otherwise huge creature.
Oh, you don't know? In the Magic Multiverse, rabbits are considered very evil beings; just looks at Kezzerdrix and Vizzerdrix. Now, I'm probably making all of this up as I go along, but to me, this is Richard Garfield's attempt to warn us of what is known in underground circles as the "Hassenpfeffer Overlords", a group of hyper-intelligent rabbits that will one day consume us all.. of course, just coming out and saying this would end with Dr. Garfield's untimely death by gnawing, so he had to ever so subtly tell us with the art he had designed for
Because Randy Asplund is awesome. Consdier Rogue Skycaptain; it's basically a giant real-world falcon. And who got away with some of the most subtle female nudity during Magic's youth? Randy Asplund.
Or it could be a reference to the flavor text of his earlier work, Thunder Spirit. But why there's a bunny on Ebon Praetor is less important than the fact that there is a bunny on Ebon Praetor. Artists got away with a lot of crazy stuff before the reins tightened, and that's what made it so entertaining. Today's Magic would never let happy accidents like Mirage's Pacifism or Hyalopterous Lemure sneak through.
ha...horrible hordies is bad conceptually but i think the technique is quite nice... a toaster in dominia? isn't that what magic is for! down with electricity contaminating dominaria, unless its crasckling from the fingertips of a mage!

i really wish someone would close and lock this thread but i know i am dreaming-it is so counter productive and rude IMO. sure everyone has the right to express their opinions and artists should be able to take the priase and input form the critics, but i think if we are every looking forward to more mtg artists posting on these threads, we should keep it positive. nobody likes to hear, they suck and i know for a fact that there are mtg artists that read these boards. i just wish people would keep it positive and if you have something negative to say, keep it to yourself. just my opinion

Holy PC police! Seriously, look at Celestial Prism and Blue Mana Battery. I would be shocked if Amy Weber herself said they weren't some of her worst pieces for MTG. The quality of artist has drastically improved over the years, and it is no mistake that a lot of the cards being brought up here are from the early days. MTG probably couldn't afford high tier artist, and doing artwork for MTG wasn't the portfolio piece that is probably is today. I would say there is a reason why only a handful of the original 25 artist are still doing artwork currently.
not being retained or used is one thing....saying they suck or crappy is something else. its just rude. do you know amy webber? i doubt she would agree. dont know your profession Dlucks, but what if we put up a board with a thread on it posting Dlucks crappiest performances. or worst dates, or generally just posted for the purpose of shredding you. thats fine if you call me PC police, but go ask AD jeremy Jarvis what he thinks of this thread-he is the one who reatins and hires artists for pieces. there are some artists he doesnt use anymore, but would he approve of saying that their art is crappy or sucks in a forum thread? i doubt that and yes i do know jeremy. its just rude and ****ty behavior. but maybe being nice wasnt stressed in ytour house-just my opinon

Staggershock pisses me off because I can never figure out who or what that lady is.
Llanowar Elves is annoying because it's always been a picture of just one elf.
Mirage Memory Lapse is pretty bad, thank God Rebecca Guay got better at drawing or else she wouldn't be one of my favorite artists.
Mold Demon looks like a five year old did it.
Grazing Gladehart's head is too flat and it's eyes are too spaced out even for a deer-esque creature.

Personally, I love Foglios' art. It's usually pretty funny. Cloud Pirates is one of my favourites.
Just not for MtG. They make fine comics, though.
