So I misread a request from another user about a life counter, but decided to go through with what I originally thought he wanted anyway. I designed a life counter you can print off and cutout and make yourself. Let me know what you think!
Hehe yeah I was considering releasing it as a PSD, but it just got so messy. O.o If you have a large piece of artwork that you'd like to put in the angel's place, I'd be happy to make you one. The process is very easy, Just kinda weird unless you know where to look in my PSD. I was actually originally going to use Hippy, but I couldn't find a picture big enough.
And I guess I'll add a couple pics of it to the first post so I don't get accused of tricking people into boosting my download count. (if there even is such a thing.... lol)
<EDIT> — Does anyone remember where Fogatog went to get those giant scans of Magic illustrations? That's the size the PSD is looking for, actually... haha.
Dude that is really sweet. Too bad I am almost out of ink. I guess that paper thats due friday is more important than a lfie counter right now Keep up the good work !
Edit: Is there any special way to attach the circles. I figured glue or something would work, but I am wondering if they'll still slip out of place. Maybe something like a brass fastener thing. But that would ruin the awesomeness of it
So I just made one of these (I'll get pics up in a sec). Very cool idea FPM. Couple of words of advice:
1) Cut along the inside of the red lines, especially for the circles.
2) Make sure the circles are nice and round, or they won't rotate properly.
3) For the display boxes, use a clear ruler and an exacto knife to cut it out. It's a pain otherwise.
4) If you have it, do this on a piece of normal cardstock, not a piece of paper. Much less flimsy that way.
@FPM: I gotta find myself a high res picture of the MM Brainstorm...that would look soooo sweet. What size do you need it at?
@Sir Auron: Glue works just fine. Just make sure the numbers line up though (not that it really matters, since you're only looking at one side at a time).
EDIT: Here are some pics (took them with my webcam, sry for bad quality)
When I made mine, I actually pseudolaminated it with packing tape lol. Yeah, that was a pain...
As for picture sizes, bigger is better. And huge is never huge enough. Haha the pic of the angel that I used started out at 2500x1783 px and was resized by roughly 20-25% (meaning it wound up around 75, 80% it's original size). You could probably get away with something smaller, though, since I'm fairly sure that most people's printers print at 300dpi whereas my PSD is set up for 600dpi. I'm actually pretty sure my computer prints at 300... haha I'm not 100% sure why I set it for 300dpi.... Oh well.
It's not attached at all, actually. It just floats in the sleeve, but since it sticks out the top and bottom through a pair of slots, it doesn't come out. The sleeve (and I meant to put this in the first post) is thinner than an MtG card, but the disc is as wide as a card so it's very secure without anything but some tape or glue, plus it fits in a normal card case without folding or anything like that.
I'm really interested in doing something like this, myself. I think I'm going to try to duplicate this, to make customized counters for some of my players.
Edit: It seems to work fairly well, but I'd still love to see how you did it to begin with.
I can send you the PSD I have as soon as I fix it. For some reason when I saved it, it merged all the layers... ><;
I did have a backup copy, though, but there are some things I need to re-update. If nothing happens to deter me, I can have it up by tonight.
I couldn't find a picture of the MM Brainstorm that was big enough to work. I would be interested in getting a picture of Garruk one there. There's a large wallpaper on Virot's website here. You don't have to get the entire picture in there, since you have to fit the WoTc logo in there and stuff.
This is absolutely awesome. Seriously, I think you could make these and trade/sell them. If only I had plastic to print on...
About to work on the Garruk one: just wanted to ask - should i be cutting on the inside of the red line, or the outside? with my firemane angel counter, the wheel seemed small when I cut to the inside of the red line.
Inside the red line. It's ugly with the red on there on purpose. Hehe the wheel is supposed to be just a shade smaller than the hole so it doesn't scrape or grind when you turn it. No worries....you're doing it right.
Heys, I got a request. Can you possibly format it easily such that you spin on the side of the counter? I say this only because I don't have particularly thick/nice paper so to compensate this I was going to put it in a clear sleave but then I won't be able to spin it. Thanks in advance if you can figure out the mechanics of this one!
I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking here, Suwabara. Actually, I have no idea haha. Could you try explaining it a different way and maybe I'll be able to get it then..?
Normal life counters like these have the spindown section on the side. For example in your picture, you spin the circle on the top and bottom. However, I want to put mine in a magic card sleeve. So i would have to spin it at the side of the art.
Yes, I could do that, but it would require a little fudging with the sizes and positioning of the holes. I'll keep it in mind for when I have some free time to devote to it.
Or, if anyone else wants to take a stab at editing my psd, there's nothing I have that you guys who've downloaded the psd version don't.
I made an Alice Margatroid lifecounter and it came out rather well. I just had a mindblank and forgot to delete one layer so a random "Aleksi Briclot" or however its spelled is randomly lurking on the card.
Splendid splendid job, FPM. Although this thread needs a link to a large amount of High-Resolution artwork for the cards. I'm not sure if the MWS Image files are high-res enough for cards, especially the Futureshifted cards like Bridge from Below, Tarmogoyf, and Tombstalker.
I've got a bit of a request. Would it possible to make a Counterbalance life counter? As in the actual card. I absolutely love the art. The largest version I found of the art is here, but I'm not sure if it's high rez enough.
This seems kind of neat. What program do I use to open this with though? My computer doesn't recognize a PSD (and, frankly, neither do I)
A PSD file is for Adobe Photoshop. I think you can download a demo version of it from the official adobe site (but your limited to what tools you can use). Other than that im not sure how to view it with out having the program.

That said great job, if I wanted to print out a life counter this would be the one I would use.
Too bad you can't customize the artwork. That would require some sort of PSD I guess. ;-)
