Long story short: I've got a friend that used to work for WotC back in the old days and he found out I'm a Magic freak. He brings in this poster, a piece of promotional art for Ice Age. I love Richard-Kane Ferguson art and I'm really stoked. Then I realize that this art doesn't correspond to any Magic Card (though Obv. Elder Druid is the closest) I can't find RKF art sites with this pic. Is it alternate art? Anyways, since we're gushing over Coldsnap and Fyndhorn Elves and stuff, here's my christmas gift to you. If anyone can give me any further info on it, ask around and let me know, yo!
PS: I can only do upload 5 photos, but I'll add more pics if you like.
Note: He's got an ice staff!! :tongue3:

I've never scene anything like that. The closest I could say.. Would be one of those huge posters they have at a prerelease. But something like that poster is priceless.
I remember Kolbjörn from the flavor texts, but I have never seen a picture like this. And although RKF is not one of my favorite artists, I must say that I am impressed.

There have been a lot of instances where legends mentioned in the first set of a block do pop up somewhere in the rest of the block. Although this wasn't true for Ice Age and Alliances, we can hope that more modern design styles would allow such awesome art to make it into Coldsnap. Hopefully any kind of Kolbjorn card would be as good as the art. Go RKF!!
It would probably be worth more if you didn't put push-pins in it, adverting my eyes from the distruction.
Ha ha, actually, it came to me in much the same condition. I can repair that to some extent. I have a couple of other rare video game posters (signed) and they are all going to get framed, as soon as I can afford it.

Might I suggest you head over to your local Kinko's or the like and make prints of it and then offer them on eBay to make yourself a fair amount of cash? WoopS!! Did I type that openly?!?!?!
Now I have no idea if this is fake or not, but if it's true then I finally found out where the art for this appears.
It's a promo video for ice age, allegedly.
These are the type of things us magic geeks really dig - The Ferret did a really nice piece on some of the early Inquests (really, really embarrassing) But keep in mind is this magic history we're talking about. 20 years from now (even if Magic isn't around, god forbid), all this stuff will be classic and "retro"

I agree, awesome piece. I think I saw it in a Duelist ad before, but the size of it didn't do it justice. I'd love to have such a big poster in my bedroom (I already have a Duelist prints of RKF's Pillage there, sitting next to Whispers of the Muse, though time and bright sunlight haven't been kind to it, sadly).
And you know, this isn't RKF's only picture of Kolbjorn. The one in the 1997 Magic calendar is awesome too, though less dynamic and more formal than this one. Shame I still don't have a scanner...

Well, this thread has been necro'd, and I have a scanner now...
Seems like a good excuse to post that other RKF Kolbjorn art I mentioned earlier.
The calendar this is from's too big for my scanner, so I missed some of the top of the image, and maybe a little on the side.

I love RKF's art, and this just looks amazing. Although for some reason along the righthand side (just past the staff) it looks as though another media was used. There seems to be an abrupt change in style. Still looks great though.
Hehe I remember this thread...
While it's nowhere near as good as a scan, I tried to work a little Photoshop magic with that first image cuz I like it. What do you think?

I just figured out what you're talking about and I think it's actually a technique that the artist is using to draw your attention to the focal point of the piece. If you look on the other side (the left), it's also very kind of vague. All you see are forms of color to suggest what's there. But when you look at the face and staff and such, it's very detailed. I think it's just a way he's saying "look here!! not there" to the viewer.
Awesome old ice age art, very cool. I wasn't really playing magic back when ice age came out, but I had friends who were, so this brings back memories.
Before this thread is considered "necroed" again, I just want to say that both of those pieces are exceptional, even for RFK. Really inspiring for an artist.
I'm also a huge RFK fan, and was determined to get the promo Korlash, instead of the normal one...
Thanks for the art KavuMonarch!
