I get if someone is just bumping old, dead threads and not really adding anything new to the discussion or something like that, but I saw a necro'd thread that was recently locked and the mod simply posted saying that if you want to continue the discussion to post a new thread instead of digging up an old one.
Ummm, why? If there is already a thread on the subject, one that's already some discussion in it, why not just continue to use that than just add another thread about the exact same thing?
In a lot of cases, there are newer cards that have come out and or become relivant since then. If you jump in to read a thread with 5 pages of discussion from 8 years ago that got bumped with one post, how much of that thread do you think is useful? Yes sure some of it still is but if we are discussing how to build a deck or something most of that discussion is very outdated.
What if for instance I went into commander and wanted to talk about Trostani, Selesnya's Voice as a commander and what would fit that kind of a deck. That is a discussion we totally encourage but if it were a thread from when RTR came out, I am afraid the suggestions from then to now would leave a very different sort of suggestion base. If readers were to go into such a thread there would be a whole bunch of comments not discussing how amazing and great things like Helm of the Host, Seance, and a million other great Trostani cards. Sure the one person who posts up to date might mention those but how much time is wasted by those who read a thread from the beginning and catch up to suggestions? The original poster might not even want suggestions anymore either so lots of discussion might not be relevant to kick back up.
Then there is formats like say.... standard or modern where things that are out of date by even a few months might be completely irrelevant based upon a meta shift or bans.
Generally speaking each area and its moderator staff handle necros differently. In commander for instance, you can dredge up and post to a commander deck no matter the age. Discussions on the other hand we tend to kill if they are more than a year or two old (depends on the moderator) based upon some of the point of the thread possibly no longer being relevant or because we feel there may be outdated data within the thread due to its age.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
