Hey everyone! Jay13x is all busy doing real life stuff these days, so I'll be taking over the Holiday Card exchange! Some of you may know me from the Commander forums, some of you may have even gotten some of whatever I've made in yeears past. I'll even be participating once again this year! So yeah, wow, 10 whole years of this... So, let's keep this going strong!
As always, exchange entries MUST be in to me by the deadline.
For 2016, the MTGSalvation Holiday Magic Card Exchange returns for its tenth year!
Here is an introduction for those of you new to this - or - a refresher for the old timers:
How the exchange works
The premise is simple. First, MTGSalvation members from all over the world send me personally altered cards. Then, as Christmas approaches, I randomly send their cards to someone else who participated. It's a fun gift exchange that's always a blast.
What do I mean by personally altered? Does that you mean you have to be as good as the people over in the official altered art thread? Not at all! What's important is that you personalize your cards. For example, here are just a handful of cards done over the past few years:
As you can see, there is a lot of variation in what people choose to do. Featured is wide range of artistic talent, from doodles to full-blown alters. Just make it fun. In general, if you wouldn't be happy with receiving it from somebody else, you should alter it until you would be.
How to Participate
Participating is easy! Just send me a PM with your address, and I'll send you mine back. All you have to do after that is send me your cards along with appropriate packaging and postage to mail your cards along to the next person. After that, just relax and wait for your return package to make its merry way to you. It's that simple!
All participants must have their cards to me by December 11th, 2015. This means I MUST have the cards in hand by this date, NOT that you should mail it by this date.. They will be redistributed and sent off over the weekend, and hopefully everybody will have theirs by December 25th. Please remember to budget enough time for your cards to arrive. For reference, I live in Maryland, USA.
Brand new accounts are excluded to avoid gaming the system. If you try and game the system to get more presents, I will catch you. Please don't do it. It will just result in a sad face for both of us.
This event is not sponsored or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast in any way. It is purely something done for fun by people who love Magic, and is not for for any financial gain or otherwise.
Tips and Checklist
Over the past three years, previous exchange runners saw a lot of cards come through. Here are some recommendations to help make the holiday exchange fun for everybody!
Try and modify cool cards. They don't necessarily have to be rares, but it's great when somebody can play the cards they receive in a deck and then tell the story of how they received them! If you are on a budget, think an altered playset of playable commons, an EDH staple, or basic lands are great... as long as it's playable it's cool!
Stumped for cards to alter? Try sending cards related to your name, avatar, or signature! That way there's a connection between MTGSalvation and the card's you're altering.
What you receive is random and a gift from someone else to you. Regardless of how you feel about the quality of cards you received, please be grateful. After all, it's a gift!
Part of the fun is ripping open the package when it finally arrives to see what you received. Do not post the alters you did ahead of time - though vague hints can be fun. We don't want to ruin the surprise!
Sending items such as letters, notes, or pictures along with your cards to the other person is not only allowed, but encouraged!
You might want to take a picture of your cards before you send them so that you can still show them off if the recipient has no way to upload an image.
You may submit as few or as many cards as you would like. Take your time and make some great alters!
IMPORTANT RULES --> READ THIS!!!
1. You absolutely must, must, must include a stamped envelope (NOT SELF ADDRESSED) envelope with enough postage for up to a 6 oz package. If you do not include one, I cannot promise you that you will receive any cards back. Make sure this envelope has enough postage to mail the stuff you sent. Again, DO NOT send a self-addressed envelope! You must provide an envelope that will be sufficient to mail your items further out.
2. In the past, a couple of people have sent extra large/heavy items. This is great, and often these items are very cool! However, if you're going to do this, please include an extra envelope that is the appropriate size and/or has the right amount of postage on it.
3. If you are an international participant, please tell me in your PM so we can discuss how international shipping will work out best in your case. The US Postal prices have done some crazy things in the last few years, and shipping times may be a concern.
4. Along with your cards and Stamped envelope, please include a slip of paper with your MTGSalvation username. There will be a lot of cards coming in and if I don't know who sent me something I can't really let them know - which I'd like to do
Checklist
Send me a PM with your address
Check you inbox daily, I'm on all the time and will generally be quick to reply.
Alter cards!
Write your MTGSalvation username on a slip of paper.
Send me your cards, that slip of paper with your MTGSalvation username, and a stamped envelope with enough postage to mail your cards, inside another envelope. Don't forget any of those steps!
Time travel to later in December and check your mail. Enjoy your gift!

I had amnesia once, or maybe twice. I don't remember.
This is a great tradition, going on ten years. Still can't figure out, w/ soooo many members, why we only draw in single-digit participants. Is it apathy, ignorance, or both?
I was hoping this year for there to be 20+ participants, especially w/ a decade behind us. I've been doing the exchange for 9 out of the 10 years (one year it slipped my mind. By time I remembered, it was too late).
There's still time (4 or 5 days, max) for others to get involved. Is there a way to spread the word in forums that others may only go to? I'm sure there are some who only go to the Vintage forum or the Market Street Cafe. I'd even be OK if the deadline was moved to Dec. 13th/14th, just to allow a few more heads to join.
Well, due to the handoff this year, we started a bit late, so that hurt a bit just to start.
Also, community forums might not get the most traffic out of the forums to begin with.
I'm thinking that next year it might help to advertise more in artwork and Commander (the latter being my own bias... ). In past years I've also plugged the gift exchange in my own Commander articles, but our schedule has been a bit wonky this year - cryogen was going to put up a league article for November, but it seems to have been bumped back for December instead, so no ad space there either (not that that gets a lot of views either.
I sent my cards yesterday!
Yeah it is strange that there aren't more participants.
Although if it were as big as it *should* be, it would get unwieldy for the host person...
Let's push it a little more, starting around Halloween '17....

I've started receiving a few packages. No peeking yet, but the cover pieces that everyone has put up so far are quite nice.
I don't have access to my list while I'm at work, but I'll try to put up a list of confirmed participants and sent/received statuses tonight (hopefully I remember).
We have 8 confirmed participants at this time, with 3 received packages (+mine):

Sorry for the lack of updates, I meant to post again earlier, but I don't have access to my spreadsheet from work.
Status: I've received all but one (a late submission that I approved in the spirit of the holidays), and have started sending out packages. Turns out it takes a bit of time to get all the exchanges squared away and get everyone's addresses where they need to go and stuff.
I sent four of the 6 current packages out yesterday, so most are en route. Yesterday was my magic day, so I didn't get around to getting the last two in the mail today, but those will ship out tomorrow.
The late submission will arrive and will swap with the package that I am currently holding when it arrives, so then everyone will be happy and should have stuff well before the holidays get all crazy like.
All packages have arrived, and as soon as the mailman passes today, all will have been sent out!
Now you need only wait with excitement in your heart, and squeal with glee when your package arrives! And then cherish your cards forever and ever!.
(Remember to take pictures/scans, and share them with all of us!)
----
Also of note, Grant1 has added a little present to each of your packages, so don't be surprised to find a little surprise from more than one person. (I didn't this year (sorry!) because... reasons. I'll do it again next year, I promise!)
Thank you Bobthefunny, for I just built a "Blur the Technicolor Merfolk" deck (I use spells like Trait Doctoring and Alter Reality to change the color hate of cards like Douse and Lifetap) that had only 2 Myriad Landscape as mana acceleration (blue normally lacks in the mana acceleration department). Now I have 3. I have a plethora of other decks the rest of the goodies will go into!
And Grant 1, thank you for
Kild Apes" - gorillas love candy canes (more than bananas... maybe?). I also have a green/red Stompy deck they will go in.
Happy holidays to everyone that participated this year. It was a blast sitting around, creatively altering the cards in the yule spirit.
Thank you very much Elemental! The Karmic Justice artist proof (message/sig. on back) went into a Sharuum enchantment/artifact EDH deck as a replacement, Joiner Adept is a new add to Cromat EDH Superfriends, Endrek Sahr is a replacement in a Savra EDH token deck, Akroma is a replacement in a Homura EDH deck, And Shu Yun will find a home soon. Every summer I go to Origins and Gen Con where I hang out with a bunch of artists. I have 2-5,000 count boxes of signed cards as well as hundreds in decks. The Karmic Justice is my first Ray Lago signed card!!!!

Baubles! It's like StoogeSlap read my mind!! I just built a Grenzo deck that uses Heartstone and Conjurer's Bauble!!
Of course, the holidays wouldn't be complete if we didn't take a moment to remember those who couldn't be with us this year. RIP Harambe.
Thanks everyone for making this a great exchange again!
You're welcome Elemental! After going through my trade binders, I realized I haven't done a theme on ornaments. Glad it was right up your alley. Happy holidays & a prosperous, happy New Year to you!
