"bigger sites like this"
Last time I checked Facebook (1,654m MAU), Youtube (1,300m MAU) and Twitter (310m MAU) as of Q1 2016. MTGS has 310,543 members?
Clearly I meant bigger Magic sites. Of course MTGS isn't one of the biggest sites on the internet.
"Amusingly, one of the Gathering Magic editors claimed that the community had moved on from forums like this... and then tweeted OblivionOne's false rumor without sourcing it to us here."
It only proved others are navigating MTGS to harvest talking points while not contributing to the information base of MTGS and gaining views at their websites. As you mentioned post counts are decreasing, thus sooner or later, MTGS may not even have the talking points to provide.
I misspoke, I meant the rate of new posts. 2015 still had more posts than 2014, and onwards backward. Feyd Ruin has the actual numbers, which show that we have more new sign-ups and more posts than ever. The traffic has just moved elsewhere on the site than where it used to be. For instance, post counts in Water Cooler Talk are way down, while Storyline is way up.
I, personally speaking, have been on here less and less due to the fact that Magic in general is on a bit of a downhill IMO. Prices and set quality have dettered me from spending and playing as much as I used to.

Regardless of the successes/failures of MtG, MTGS still provide the current happenings within the MtG community free-of-charge! Just like reading a good novel.
the modern forums are still very active. I hop back and forth between dedicated modern subreddits and here. standard forums are dying. I will try my best to participate more in them. hopefully traffic there will pick up. legacy forums are dead. apparently everyone is at mtgthesource.
MTGsalvation provides a vastly superior quality of discussion and is a better forum for pro input.
Most of the upper level grinders and lower level pros that I know on the west coast (myself included) would say the exact opposite. MTGsal is pretty well regarded as having a remarkably low quality of competitive discussion, and most only read on here to find out what's going to be getting played in rounds 1-3. The only place I know of that's held in lower esteem is the general forums on Tappedout.
Contrast that with r/magictcg, where truly terrible posts get downvoted to the point of being unseen, and name pros actually chime in and contribute to discussion, not to mention official WoTC and store reps. Contrast that with a site that's amazingly slow and is blocked on many business and professional firewalls, and that's pretty much that. Obviously there's issues in other places too, but MTGSal views many of its deficiencies as strengths and has remained static or regressed since getting sold to Curse.
I've always looked up cards & combo's on the site for deck ideas throughout the years, only recently have I submitted into making an account.
Curse should just add a feature where it's members can create their own, or each join others, live chat rooms, as its own Forum tab. Who Agrees?
What can be done to revitalize some of the dying subforums? I know I for one would love for the Legacy forum to be more active, as I'm looking to really jump into the format, but our primers and thread activity in that sub forum seem well behind what I am used to in the Modern sub forum. I lurked on thesource, but that site seems to have an incredibly hostile attitude for new legacy players. I don't think MTGSal would have that issue, given our mod active mod staff, and seemingly more friendly atmosphere. I can't speak for the standard crowd, as I haven't seriously visited that sub forum since I stopped playing standard in 2013. But I can say I've noticed the Modern subforum having a higher user numbers from what I've seen while jumping from sub forum to subform.
I don't know how people use Reddit. I hate, hate, hate that site. Between the flamewars and crap posting that goes on on that site, I don't know how any meaningful discussion is ever accomplished there.
People in the Creative Commons seem to troll & compete as though they are playing against each other instead of discussing ideas & truly interacting with each other. Can't say much about the other forums, besides it is a shame there is an introduce yourself section that is as ignored as it is. Makes for a poor experience for new users.
Well, looking at the main page of the forums, there are more than 30 subforums I can see, and of those, 4 have posts within the past 4 hours, and 8 have no posts within the past 24 hours. I know it's a Sunday, and that all subforums are not created equal, but that still seems pretty slow, especially for prerelease weekend.
The limited subforum used to be full to bursting with posts on a prerelease weekend. As of this post, there have been 16 posts there in the past 12 hours.
Curse is slow and filled with advertisements. I have been less inclined to use the forum since the switch. This obviously doesn't apply to new members. If you've never tasted chicken salad you're perfectly content with chicken ****.
