MtgSalvation traffic is down more than 50 percent the last two years, just like mtgo traffic is down more than 50 percent in that same period.
You're gonna have to back that up, since this thread has a global moderator saying last December had record activity, and a technical admin saying active user stats are up.
MTGS is not dying, I want to put that out there first. We had our most active day in the site's history this past December.
We are somewhat slower than we used to be, but there are a lot of reasons for that, but the two big ones are that Curse is blocked by a lot of professional firewalls (so when the site moved to Curse we lost those work day posters) and there has been a rather huge shift to social media (Facebook/Twitter) in the last few years, to the point where Wizards closed their own forums.
We're most active during spoiler season (and just after leaks are posted), so in the lull between spoiler season and the next major event, we do tend to slow down.
another reason to ditch curse as a forum host.
honestly, i stopped posting from my phone because the site is pretty much unuseable on my mobile devices since the switch to curse.
So I've been on the forum for while. Even though it doesn't seem like it, and I've been noticing a lot lately that when I go into sub forums like Standard, Limited/Sealed, or even General Discussion, the same posts are at the top and most of the times replies to threads are very slow.
Maybe cos more than a few users are under their banned period.
Jokes aside.. I do feel MTGS is having less traffic. But do i care. NO!
MTGS is still providing what I wish to see in a forum. Spoilers / Threads..
Even if there is only 1 other user, if we are interacting, I will still visit this forum.
However, even if a staff / moderator posts a reply, but if there isnt any data I will not believe so willing as there is a conflict of interest.

What do you mean with this ?
What is a pro firewall ?
I mean the kind that businesses and government agencies install to filter what employees can access to prevent employees from wasting company time. The old website got through these, and we found that quite a few people (including some staff) couldn't access the site at work anymore when we moved to Curse since it's more well known.
I don't even know what I'd do if curse was blocked at work. Gotta pass time at a call centre somehow. Some companies will do that if they're serious about productivity. Sometimes it could be a privacy issue if you deal with private information
Even if this forum has declined, it's still nothing compared to being on the ghost town that was the WoTC forums between the redesign and last year's shutdown. If you want a basis for a dying forum, that was it. Only a handful of subforums had any activity at all, and the regular users couldn't have numbered more than a couple dozen across the whole site.

Well yes, except that you haven't pointed out the reason in words =).
It is because the mods have the attitude that threads aren't supposed to discuss how things could be with mtg in all the various areas. The only discussions allowed outside the geek vs not geek threads are the ones clarifying how things are.
The mods use all the tricks in the book to eliminate good ideas from the forums, because once those get visible all the lacks in this game become much clearer (to newer players).
That and the hopeless discussions that root in comp-rules/ipg/tournament "principles"/"policies".

I've only joined MTGSalvation recently, and have been lurking for a few months, so I can't speak for this forum. What I can say is that the old WoTC forums had a serious moderation problem in regards to how they let trolls and spam occur.

Agree, and that is a "technique", because when they do not have words left in a discussion they let the trolls drown the genuine posters that came to spread good ideas, or at least to discuss them.

I don't think I've heard anything good about mods on WotC forums. At least mods are fair here

that's a pity the mods are not good there. I used to be on some pretty strict places, never had the mind games thing though. that's a new one to me.
I've come to these forums for a long time and I personally haven't noticed any decline over the years. That said, I no longer access the site from my mobile devices. As others have said, the loading times and pop-ups are beyond annoying. Just reading a post and mid paragraph I'm redirected to some ad garbage. So while I don't think membership of the site has declined, usage may have since access on mobile is frustrating.

It seems to me that posts per day in the forums that I visit have declined. There are appear to be fewer new posts and replies where I actually care to look. But, that is just my observation.
I know that I have frequented the site far less since the switch to Curse. It seems like the site has gotten a bit laggy when I type posts and things take longer to load, both of which discourage me from visiting more often.

So when you hear a mtgsalvation mod saying traffic is on par and user base is increasing you feel like you are listening to some wotc spokesperson talking about something wotc related, ha ?
Just to say that I too stopped looking at the forum from my mobile, for the same reasons other people have already mentioned. Hoping things get sorted soon.
I don't usually post but been lurking here for years. Just want to chime in regards to the forum in mobile mode. I have to switch in desktop mode just to see what is the latest article and click the latest post. In mobile mode you have enter the forum section you want to see and click the latest article and there's no way to see the latest post. You have to actually go inside the article which is the first post and have to click the last page and still have to scroll down to see the latest post. Really bad design. On the main forum they show the thread and post count which are freaking useless. They should show instead the latest post like on desktop mode. Been meaning to complain regarding the change in mobile mode ever since it changed but couldn't find the appropriate section. I still view the forums on my mobile but in desktop mode which I have to keep zooming in.
On topic. I see the forums are quiet right now but quite busy during spoiler seasons and any news of new cards or release of new blocks.

Even though I dont post much, I can 105% vouch for this, I'm one of those people that can no longer access this forum while at work. I'm too busy when I get home to be reading about MTG and so, I've kind of quit MTG all together. Only came here today because I was wondering about Eternal Masters. Maybe i'll be back in a month when theres more about it.
I will say this, I probably post a lot less and use the forums a lot less ever since I dropped standard. The way standard has moved the last few years (I last played with U/W delver in ISD/SOM era) is that the rares/mythics feel like they are making up more of the structure of a deck and the overall power level of C/UC have gone down.
This leads to an overall higher cost for standard, with less and less cards keeping "non-standard" value. What cards from Khans block are going to continue to be played in Modern/Legacy? Siege Rhino? Monastery Swiftspear? Ugin in Tron? The fetches also I suppose. Not much translating after it leaves standard.
There might be less active forums as the Mods said, but other forums are definitely more active than in the past. EDH is a good example of that.
My observation was simply that the forums that I frequent seem quieter now than in the past. I am sure there are forums with greatly increased traffic, but those aren't forums I visit.
While I don't have any concrete prescriptions, I feel like wizards could do a bit better distributing previews throughout the year. There are just a bunch of doldrum periods where something, anything from eternal masters, conspiracy, commander 2016, etc would keep up some flagging energy in the forum community. Even right now, now that SOI spoilers have been released, folks are just sitting on their asses waiting for prerelease and their preorders to fulfill. Far from taking energy away from SOI, a little preview from one of the summer or fall sets could do a lot to stimulate conversation online and at the LGS the weekend of prerlease/release.
As for mtgs dying, I think it's a matter that there hasn't been a major format devised or released since modern. The most recent thing even approximating a new format was edh tiny leaders, and interest in that seems to have died off completely. Until there's something that significantly shakes up card prices, or breathes new life into a dead corner of the card pool, then it seems like folks interest will generally flag. Gamers need a project, and there just isn't much to do or discuss in the game outside of solving metas or hairsplitting cube and edh cards. Other sites are also just doing a better job analyzing market data; I spend a lot of time these days at mtggoldfish, where it's easier to glean information on card deals, and keep up with price trends.
Dont you think that there should be no preview of a prerelease at all, meaning no one know the cards in advance ?
I think it is much more fun that way, and I know it is a great advantage to read cards in advance because then you have to spend way less time deciphering cards and its' (sometimes horrible) words/wordings.
The hardcore mtg geeks go straight to archetype build after spending 1 minute cracking the booster folios at the prereleases.

Oh, I love the pre-release period and think prior knowledge of the card pool is necessary before competing. What I meant above is that it seems like there's a lull between the end of spoilers and the actual pre-release weekend where wizards should amplify some upcoming product information. Their stated reason for not doing so is "we want to keep folks attention on the new set about to drop," but I think it's actually the perfect time to keep enthusiasm, momentum, and conversation for upcoming products going.

Just get rid of the prespoiling completetly, no one knows in advance what the pre release brings of cards, maybe it is phyrexians and maybe it is dimoloshigans (they havent used them yet), or something else.
It is so exciting to not know what is inside that parcel...
