I remember when I made a thread almost a year ago about how the staff appeared to be in massive disarray back in February. There were a significant number of staff changes over the course of just 1.5-2 months time. As someone who has been on this site for over seven years, I have seen more than my fair share of staff turnover. At the time, I had never seen such a significant change in staff members being demodded, so I made a thread voicing my concerns that something was wrong. The staff, at the time, told me not to worry about the massive turnover.
So I can assure you, there's not any hidden turmoil or any animus going on behind the scenes that's causing mods to drop like flies. I think satisfaction amidst the ranks is the highest it's ever been, and with the new additions from last month, the staff has more than enough coverage and new talent to keep things running smoothly.
Only a couple of months ago, we had staff that had not visited the site since April last year; but we have since then made a greater effort to make sure we have moderators that visit the site on a frequent basis, and don't let forums in shambles. So the number of staff changes recently is partly thanks to the transition we're experiencing, and partly coincidental.
In fact, I wouldn't say the staff is in turmoil but I think they are healthier than ever. A lot of great new people and moderators have been put onto the staff that not only have what it takes to be great mods, but they have my total respect. Guys like Megiddo, ExpiredRascals, Viricide and pretty much every new moderator has done their jobs since being added to the staff and has done it well.
I have a lot of confidence in the staff these days, and I am being honest when I say there is nothing to worry about.
Like the sucker I was back then, I took the statements at face value and thought nothing else about them. Several months and a few epic drama bombs later, it's blatantly obvious that all of you were wrong. Everything was not fine. The staff has experienced a type of tumultuous chaos that I have never seen in the site's history. The turnover on the staff accelerated at an extremely rapid pace, with admins changing as frequently as I change clothes and moderators going in and out a seemingly never-ending revolving door. It sure made the staff changes back in February that I mentioned look like a sideshow at the carnival in comparison. Reading those comments made by now ex-staffers only makes me shake my head in disgust. How could this have happened? How could the staff try to save face like this when it was only a matter of time before everyone knew the truth? As an aside, I think it's funny that all these comments came from people that no longer are on the staff. It might be just a coincidence, but I thought I'd put that out there.
Throughout the site's history, I have been quietly supportive of the mods. I was almost always on good terms with them and I enjoyed what they have done for the site. Ever since the "culture change" said by the staff that has been happening the last year or so though, my approval of the staff has eroded. As more and more drama unfolded, things started to grow ever more weary on me that the staff really knew what they were doing. Ever since I took a recent look-back at the thread I made and seeing the staff blatantly lie to me like this, I'm now at the point where my patience and trust with the staff have reached wit's end. I cannot trust the staff anymore. Not after they insisted on telling me everything was fine when it ultimately blew up right in their face.
Consider this a message from one of the site's veterans:
You have failed to adequately perform your assigned duties.
You have placed this site in the most unstable condition that it has ever experienced in its entire history.
You have alienated members that were once perfectly fine people for a long time. (Solaran_X immediately comes to mind)
You have lost my trust.
And I don't think you are getting it back any time soon.
Can we please just let all of this drama go already? I'm sorry, but thousands of people use this site and yet it's always the same handful of people who seem to think the staff is full of corrupt, power-hungry, two-faced liars. This drama over the staff being the downfall of this site has been going on for MONTHS. Just..let it go already. Please. For every user who complains in CI about the horrible corrupt mods, there are at least a hundred who go about happily using the forum every day, never having any problem with the staff or the way things are run.
None of what I just said was directed at you specifically, Surging_Chaos, but do we really need another "The mods are horrible liars" drama thread? We already have like 4 ongoing threads about "staff corruption" and it's just getting flat out ridiculous. People are taking every little, tiny event and pouncing on it and blowing it way out of proportion to try to bring down the staff. And honestly, a lot of these people who are doing so are lucky that the staff here really aren't as corrupt as they claim, or else they would have all been banned months ago and this constant drama would all be over and done with.
I don't think a lot of people here know what true staff corruption is. Try going to a forum where the staff berate you because you're a new poster, tell you to shut up or get banned because you're debating with them or pointing out their hypocrisy, and permaban you with no warning or infraction because you disagreed with a popular forum member or someone they're friends with. That's what true forum corruption is, and thank god Salvation is one of the few sites I've been on where that kind of crap doesn't happen. Thank god salvation doesn't have staff that sit back and laugh at and call you names while telling you to "lurk moar before posting and making an idiot out of yourself".

Are you thinking ultimately about what has happened? Can you say for sure that a lot of it wasn't behind closed door to prevent drama? This seems like it's fishing. Also, please note that a few people (myself) wanted drama causing issues to go away. I feel that the staff had tried it's best, despite all the *ahem* items that were thrown at them out of context, were doing their best. This comment also states that you had preconceived notions about the staff because it wasn't what you wanted.
Throughout the site's history, I have been quietly supportive of the mods. I was almost always on good terms with them and I enjoyed what they have done for the site. Ever since the "culture change" said by the staff that has been happening the last year or so though, my approval of the staff has eroded. That's because you can't see the big picture of what's going on. While your basing it on what you do see, I do have to question whether or not you are looking at it subjectively.
You also can't say the staff was blatantly lying to you outside of morale and ethic values. Each person on staff is different. What each person does is apparently up to there. We cannot, as a general userbase, state that everything that other users and/or staff, is true.
Consider this a message from one of the site's veterans:
You have failed to adequately perform your assigned duties.

You have lost my trust.
And I don't think you are getting it back any time soon.
1. How can one say that the staff hadn't performed their duties given to them? Even if they did, someone would complain that they didn't go above and beyond.
2. How is it unstable? Is this in regards to previous issues? If so, then using such for the current issue is irrelevant as your not thinking about the current problem. Instead your relating it to the past problems.
3. I'm not a long time person here, however I've found little to no problems with what has been going on. While I do have SOME issues, I have the freedom to voice such (as you have done), but I just voice them privately to the people in question. Talking instead of *****ing about it tends to get further.
4. Okay, so you've stated that a long while ago in your posts and you've made that very clear. This right here shows how biased you are being in this post. (This also relates to the last 'pointer' you've made).
I've seen enough whining about how things are unfair here to read not only between the lines, but take things at face value. You've MADE your decision to not trust the staff. That is your choice. I'm one of the few that will say "There's the X in the corner of your browser...use it."
I happen to like this site. I've seen the stuff that has gone on here (especially during the gutter issues, but I am biased about that). I tend to just read instead of comment (sometimes).
tl;dr: Quit complaining. They are TRYING to make things right. If all your going to do it complain, then your apparently someone that thinks (or is showing) that they only care about themselves instead of the VOLUNTEERS that work hard to at least ATTEMPT to make things better here. Pity you can't see that.
All of the mods who responded to that thread actually responded to your question.
If I recall correctly, you asked if the turnover was due to something or was it just a random, unnatural flux in staff turnover. The TRUTH was that it was just a time of transition as a lot of older mods were leaving and the staff was hiring a lot of new mods. Any drama event AFTER your thread was put up was in no way connected to the staff turnover at that time. Afterwards? Sure, we lost a couple of mods who decided they didn't want anything to do with what was happening, especially when the vanillas were left out of the Gutter-closing decision. Regardless, that was AFTER your question went up.
Normally Id take this opportunity to go into some lengthy detailed post in reply to the OP, but Ive got a lot going on right now (been a crazy week), so Ill keep this short, by asking one simple question:
You said you created that thread back in February (over 8 months ago), you got those replies with the explanation that they were wanting a more active mod base (which was why I never acceppted any of the mod offers I was given because I wasnt going to agree if I didnt have the time), which would seem like a good thing, as the userbase was continuing to grow and they needed more active mods to keep up with everything and make sure coverage was there. Now, the question:
When/why did the chaos start AFTER that point? Was it immediately after, or was it months later?
To put it simply, in order for you to have been lied to, what you were told has to have not been true AT THE TIME. If there was a significant enough gap between when you were told that and when the chaos began, I think it could be rather easily concluded that the chaos was unrelated and thing legitimately were fine at the time.
Its just a thought of course, but something that should probably be considered.
During February, everything was still fine - moderators weren't burning out.
This is honestly how all of us felt:

To be frank, back in November, I was ready to quit due to the state of staff culture.
[*snip*] a lot of issues have been raised & addressed. One of those policies was staff review, so. . .
The dust is starting to settle, but I personally don't think we've had a significant amount of negative staff actions, & the best way I can describe what it's like in the Staff Lounge is it's like finally being able to open the windows.
I'd like to encourage any staff who feel comfortable coming forward to discuss this, to do so
Quote from Viperesque »
It's also worth emphasising that as far as I can tell, this is mostly coincidental. The only real connection between any of the incidents mentioned is the three mods removed due to lack of activity, as there was a push made to remove staff who no longer had the time to devote to their duties. We obviously can't disgorge the whole contents of the staff lounges for all to see, but I assure you, the attitude is quite the opposite of turmoil. I can't recall it being more positive any time in my 16 months on staff.
There's a lot of enthusiasm within newly appointed staff, IMO.
Quote from Yukora »
I can only echo the sentiments of my fellow staff members in here. The staff, for far too long, had been simply existing with the intent of maintaining the status quo. We weren't taking strided to move forward and we weren't fixing problems with due haste. A lot of the staff changes listed are due to a renewed effort to make these forums the best they can be while being ran by the best staff we can produce. It's only natural that a transition like what we are going through produces noticeable changes; including a sizeable shift in the staff's roster.
There's nothing to worry about. The changes you are noticing are a sign of something good.

To chime in on this, and to add to what ria has already said which is correct: this wasn't much of a debacle at all.
I was taken off of the moderator staff for knowingly having a trade thread while being under eighteen. It was totally my fault for not closing it instantly, and I deserved being taken off of the staff. I blame none of the current moderators or administrators for anything that happened during that case. It was a stupid mistake on my part. Definitely no bad feelings here.
In fact, I wouldn't say the staff is in turmoil but I think they are healthier than ever. A lot of great new people and moderators have been put onto the staff that not only have what it takes to be great mods, but they have my total respect. EDIT @ Jeff - Everything began to go off the rails after gutter closing 2.0 was launched, several months afterwards. Or possibly around the time that Kijin and other gutterites began to move off staff. That was in May.
Hmm. To me, calling our answers back then "lies" is almost like calling a statement saying "G/R Ramp is good in standard" from 8 months back a lie because it's not true in today's standard (random example - I honestly don't know whether or not G/R ramp is good in standard these days).
So yeah, things were indeed pretty good back then.
Requesting permission to derail this thread into a thread about ponies.
EDIT:
I guess I should ask, what is the point of this thread? How is it different than all the other threads already blowing up in CI? I love drama, and I used to write for Guildwatch on wow.com. But seriously, this **** is getting out of hand, and those perpetuating the drama? Now I'm starting to understand why the moderators and staff are getting tired of this ****.

If things were truly fine back then, why did everything suddenly blow up not too long after that? One thing to note is that viperesque's Gutter Closure thread came out on 6-21-12, going into effect on 7-1-12. So it hasn't been really eight months, but more like four months, which is half that time period. Since that time, drama has stewed for months after that (Azrael calling out rianalnn, WCT problems, the leak of Curse).
If "everything was fine", none of this would have happened. I just cannot buy the premise that everything was fine when the site experienced a cascade of drama bombs that started at the beginning of the summer and continuing right now. The timing is just too soon, relatively speaking.

Whichever aphorism you prefer, they all cover it pretty well. The world goes from perfect to horrible in literally the blink of an eye; something snaps, someone breaks, something new is added. Not everything has to have a deep history.
And anyway, all that WCT stuff had nothing to do with anything happening in February.

What exactly is the point of this thread? (Also, the WCT thing was a separate event from the February thing.)

No, really, things were on an upswing at that time. Azrael was on staff and was very active in re-vamping just about everything. Morale was good. People listened to others when they had discussions. At the time of my leaving, it had evolved to 3 groups in the ML: Those who were for the subject at hand, those who were against, and those riding in the middle, not sure where they wanted to go. Didn't matter what the subject was, this was how it went, and those two groups, the "for" and "against"? Yeah, good luck getting either of them to change their minds.
Those staff members who responded to you in February didn't lie to you. Some destroyed your trust when they decided to demolish the Gutter and pissed a lot of people off with their brazen actions.
Also, SC, some of the things keeping problems in check back then left or wore out. So it looked like we had solutions, having the muffler duct taped on made the car run, but eventually the muffler has to be repaired or taped back on - this seems to be the most realistic option since the staff are unpaid volunteers and fixing problems on a place like this is exhausting. So we do the best we can.
Perspective:
Too many people think they fixed things when in fact they created temporary solutions... and too many people also think things are busted all to hell when it's actually a temporary problem. Perspective has been lost and anyone who thinks that things used to be better or that they used to be worse are probably right.
(I am avoiding Gutter stuff since that is a relatively focused set of issues, but "big picture")

For the record, a temporary solution is better than no solution at all. I think this is a problem. I think the staff believes this to be a problem. If even a moment's respite can be given, then the staff should pounce on a temporary solution in order to work with less of an issue towards a more permanent one.

I actually find it pretty low that you would throw out these wild accusations. I did not lie back then and I am definitely not lying now. These sort of situations are the exact reason I left the staff.

And anyway, all that WCT stuff had nothing to do with anything happening in February.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.

I like this idea. I don't want to stifle discussion, but it's already happening elsewhere. If someone really needs this one open, just let me know. Thanks!
