I would think that it would be a nice feature to have expired infractions leave your profile page after a year or something. Perhaps if you have no other infractions during that period.
I received an infraction in November of last year. It would be nice not having to look at that thread title for eternity.
This is just a suggestion, and perhaps this already happens. I searched a bit but couldn't find anything that pertains to this question.
To my knowledge they're always there. The logic I see is that they're a "reminder" of what you've done and thus insentive not to do it again (on purpose at least). That being said, I'm fine with them staying or leaving after X amount of time.
I would think its more of a moderation tool; a mod/admin can look and see your warning/infraction history at a glance if you break a rule, and use that information in deciding whether a warning or infraction is appropriate.
Of course, I personally can see a side for wanting them to vanish eventually. Afterall, if a user with a high post count breaks a rule, I'm more likely to infract than warn regardless of past history, simply because they've been around long enough to know better.
Having quite a few infractions, I can tell you they never leave but they move onto the next page when you get enough of them. That way, you won't be staring at the same thread for your entire life. Some infractions go all the way back to my join date. Of course, if you're a goody two shoes, yes, you're stuck staring at that same infraction for your entire time here.
Personally, it doesn't really bother me that much. I've made many mistakes in my time and saying something I shouldn't have on an internet forum isn't something remarkable enough to consume me over. Just take it lightly. You'll forget about it eventually and one day you can scroll through all your warnings and infractions and remember what they were about.

In many cases yes, but I guess you could also argue with a higher post count, you have a just a higher chance of unintentionally rubbing folks the wrong way. Particularly if you are posting in debate.
I understand the warning, but if you heed it, like say no more infractions for a year... it would be nice not having to look at your profile and see whatever silly subject it was that you were debating. (i.e. Gay Marriage: Yea or Nay?)
Infractions have never been deleted, even after they have expired. I'm not even sure the forum software supports it. Sorry, but you'll have to look at that thread title for eternity.

Yeah, I checked the vBulletin web page, help files, and forum. Indeed there does not seem to be any type of feature. It would seem that one would have to custom modify to do such a thing.
It could be deleted manually though, but I don't see much incentive for moderators to waste their time doing that though.
Thanks for the reply, it is interesting to know. Next time I will aim to get an infraction in a cooler thread.
Annorax, is there any way to loose infractions? Like for example a member has just been suspended for two months. upon his return is there anything that member can do to earn off one (or more) suspension(s)? The idea of restoration is used in the criminal justice system to give offenders the chance repair the damage they caused. If given the chance id like to do the same.

There's no way to "lose" infractions and undo past offenses, but any good behavior is generally taken into account when we decide how to handle disciplinary actions. You can't undo or "lose" those past suspensions from your record, but how you've acted between them will be considered if you need to be suspended again.

so um... wait... does that mean it is actually possible to receive three active infractions, without actually getting suspended... assuming that between the time of your last suspension and you receiving these 3 infractions, you have otherwise been on excellent behavior?

What I believe he meant is that if you were once suspended, and then didn't screw up for a long while before getting another set of infractions, we might be less inclined to send you on an extended vacation rather than a week or so.
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

I see... so the question I have... is what constitutes not screwing up for a long while? I mean I haven't been suspended since November of 2008 (which was also my first suspension). However over the course of the time between then and now, I have gotten 4 Infractions, and 1 Warning, but never all at once. So the question is, if I managed to not get suspended for another year what would happen with me (even assuming I still was getting maybe 1 or 2 infractions every other month) Hypothetically speaking?

Why, are you intending on getting more infractions?
I really can't answer that question with certianty; I can only give what I would do, and that would be to note that you've stayed out of trouble for a year, for the most part, and decide that a six month suspension would be harsh...and probably end up giving you the normal.
No guarantees, though- each situation is different.

wait... what? Six Months? I thought the second suspension was 2 weeks? When did it change to six months?????????
Also, I have another question pertaining to a similar topic to this one, and didn't feel like starting a new thread to get it answered: How is the time it takes between when an Infraction is earned and when it expires determined?

Six months is a common suspension time given when a user shows that he or she just doesn't get it (in other words, keeps breaking the same rules over and over)
Generally, infractions expire in forty days' time.
There are certain other types that can last up to a year in length, but for the most part, it's 40 days.
