Guardman, not once have I contested the legality of what she is doing. I am, however, contesting whether or not it's right and whether or not the Wiki rules should permit it. It is my opinion that it is not right and should not be permitted.
Who are you to judge what is right or wrong? Your did not make the wiki rules, its a matter of opinion, some people don't mind, some people do mind, if they don't like it get it edited out, its that simple.
Opposite, I don't think I can be much clearer here. I know it's public information. I don't believe MM or whoever should be able to go about digging up whatever she can find and putting it here. It has no relevance to this site.
Its relevent to a member on this site, anything they post on the forum is fair game.

Honestly this is the smartest thing said in this thread so far. This is exactly why you should always know what you are doing online.
Glad some of yous think so. Its a basic law of the internet.
And to add to this.. If you do screaw up and post things you dont want to be made public know that it is your OWN fault. Thats why all the sites I am only reveal a certain amount about me. But then again I am still public on my info to a certain extent.
I would like to add the a new rule to the Wiki, effective immediately. Please reply if you have any issue with me adding this within 24 hours.
A member's Wiki page can only contain information pertinent to their membership on MTGSalvation and trading card games. Any other personal information including name, location, picture, other websites they frequent, relationships, and so forth is not allowed without that users consent with the SOLE EXCEPTION of information that is available in their MTGSalvation profile or in Magic: The Gathering related articles they have written. Violation of this rule will result in an IP suspension from MTGSalvation.
While we will not retroactively change Wiki pages, this will be followed with a PM to all members and staff in the Wiki asking them to please check their wiki pages and delete anything they do not want on there.

I hereby announce in a public forum that i have NO ISSUE on the information on my wiki and thus will even offer to have some info corrected to reflect the information to be more up to date.
I'd like to propose that a small change be made to that rule.
I believe that real names and city/state information (but not full address) should be permitted on the Wiki for active traders (voluntarily) and members who have been Banned for Ripping (involuntarily). This way, the wiki could be another source of information for stopping rippers and impersonators from ripping MTGS users off.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
Why do we even have a wiki? I wasn't even aware that one existed for MTGSalvation until it suddenly became an issue a few days ago. Honestly, if the wiki isn't regularly accessed, edited, and maintained, it becomes a board for outdated, irrelevant, and downright false information as it is now. The wiki clearly isn't serving a constructive purpose. It'd be better if the wiki was simply stripped down to the site history.
EDIT:
I'd also like to point out that even senior members, such as Sapphire Tri, take almost no part in the wiki, as evidenced in his request to have his profile edited. This only proves further that the wiki couldn't be less relevant to the site.

For God's sake, have you even looked at the wiki? Probably not, because otherwise you could have not said anything so unbelievably nonsensical as this.
First of all, the MTGS Wiki is, after Phyrexia.com's kind of dwindling into inactive state, the biggest source of storyline information over the WWW. Not to speak about strategy, sets, and so on. It is very well the biggest MTG-oriented info source out there.
If you wanted to address the member pages, okay, there may be a modification made if the members wish to - but in general, be so very kind and next time, check the facts before you start oversimplyfing and thus scorning and deprecating the work of others...

You mean, have the wiki have an additional function that resembles MTG Trading References.com, or whatever it is?
Good idea. It'll also be relatively easy to carry out.

As for MM, I'm convinced she's guilty as all sin and should be banned, yes. But she's got a right to defend herself against any accusation levied against her as well.
Haha.
Well, I have no business or interest defending myself against 'any accusation levied against her as well'; and, 'as for guilty as sin', well >.>.
Quote from Guardman »
This would require a changing of the current wiki rules, which is fine. But that is besides the fact because if MM is posting publicly avaliable information, even if you don't want it to be there, she is not disobeying any rules or abusing anybody's trust. And if you do change the rules to make that against the rules, you can't convict MM of doing anything wrong, unless she keeps on doing it, because that would be ex post facto.
Convict?
That is the underlying issue, in my opinion. Yes, it's public information, but there should be a limit to what MM or whoever should be allowed to dig up and post here, and that limit, in my opinion, does not allow for her or anyone else to dig up anything personal about me, you, whoever and post it, public information or not.
Hmhm.
Quote from iRebel »
If Magic Mage is the one putting personal information about forum members into their wiki pages, be it facebook, myspace, home address, whatever, then I believe the staff should remove her from the Wiki project effectively immediately and ban her from MTGS. It is a gross abuse of her power and violation of peoples privacy. There is absolutely ZERO justification for it and in no way can we, IMO, have good faith in her abilities and judgement to oversee the Wiki if she's responsible for it.
I used to.
Before, we were all a little more happy-go-lucky, and the issue of privacy wasn't a concern as such.
If she isn't, then whoever is should be banned for it.
I agree with Sorryguy on this. Things that members have done on the forum and are related to the forum are fine. Items such as personal home addresses should not be on the Wiki. Those are not relevant to the member's history or place on the forum, and leaves the member vulnerable to attacks. One could argue that the address could be found elsewhere on the site, but the truth of the matter is that most people wouldn't even know it was hidden away on here if it wasn't for the Wiki.
I don't think that a member needs to messaged before a page for them is created. However, I do think they need to be notified before any major personal information is uploaded.
Unless you want to have such information divulged, perhaps?

Any information That is handed to you AND only you is confidential info and thus releasing THAT info publicly can hold massive negatives to you.
So irebelk using the argument of PRIVATE vs PUBLIC when you can not compare the two in the way you are. What is public right now is Legal. you CAN request it to be removed and if that isn't done then you can raise an issue BUT you also have to raise an issue on WHERE you released this info.
It's all legally permissive.
Also add to the subject if the admins decided to change the rules on HOW the wiki is handled MM could only be held responiable for AFTER rules change as there is no rule limits as there never is with Wiki's.
Um.
In the end this argument pretty much can be simple...
Things are getting really blurry now.
If you dont want your stupidity recorded onto a public format dont be stupid in a public forum.
Such is my stance, but aren't we all hypocrites?
I have, in the past, ported information from posts, as I was of the impression that coming off in such-and-such forum with supposed specialist never mind.
I would like to point out that you don't need to be a MTGS member to join the wiki and edit pages. These edits could be caused by wiki-trolls.
This is also why I made my page and check it at least once a week. It is a good way to make sure your info is just right. But I do support the PM system.
You know, you're probably better off making an extendo, as only you* can edit it, as opposed to 6 billion other people, who could.
In any case, I've purged a couple pages, some on the basis of sheer lack of notability; some sections, etc.; and added some red-tape.
Thanks, and sorry.

True, having an extendo is probably safer, but it is not as concise and is prone to being hijacked by certain peaple, *cough* The Fallen One *cough*. Plus I enjoy the fact that other peaple can edit my wiki. I mean I check mine at least once a week and make sure that everything is correct, so I am not to worried about strange stuff being put on their as I can and will quickly catch it. Plus pretty much all the info I have put on MTGS that is pertanent to me can be found on my wiki.
Finally if I made an extendo it would make my mirror mad.
I don't get why anyone would mind there being a Wiki entry about them. If it's false information, you can just laugh at it, because that's all it is. False information. If it's true, then I don't know why you would mind either. Are you ashamed of what you did? Are you ashamed of what you are? I don't think anyone should be.
Links to profiles of the same person on other forums are just plain useless, however.
Well, I guess I did not want my ebay account information up there either. Would you?

And what about the rest of the world, that doesn't have your special insight into the truths and falsehoods of your own life? There's a reason why slander and libel are illegal in most countries: false information can be damaging to a person's reputation and good standing. I won't give any specific examples here, but I can imagine a number of plausible lies that might really hurt various members if allowed to stand in the wiki unchallenged, and I'm sure you can too.

This is going to come off kind of trollish, but why exactly do we have an MTGS wiki anyways? I never really saw the purpose of it. Is anyone actually looking at it and going to profiles of random members? I made a joke entry for me like two years ago and it's still there.
The whole thing just seems like a waste of time and resources to me. I don't think anyone is particularly interested in whatever an MTGS wiki consists of, and it also seems rather self serving.

Yeah I didn't really "look at page 3" per se, I just decided to randomly post.
If it really is such a great source of info then I think it's a great project, but I'm still skeptical if enough people are really viewing it to make it worth its time.
I tried to send a PM to MM but hers was turned off, again. Which was why I don't normally bother to check.
I'm subscribed to this thread, and a couple others. Ain't that enough?
Look, I don't get the opportunity to check MTGS as much now; should I even wish to, that is.
(I do have a (real) life.)
(P.S. Sorry if I seem pissed-off or whatever, but I don't owe it to anyone that I should have PM's turned-on; same for having it turned-off. >:P)

Now, you'd know better than I whether anyone actually reads the wiki, but as long as the readership is some non-trivial subset of MTGS forumgoers, then it's large enough for a falsehood to cause damage to the victim's reputation on this site. I'm not suggesting that it could ruin a person's whole life, or that the law would actually have anything to do with it; I am saying that it's the same principle in miniature.

Q: You know what might be making people not care about the MTGS Wiki?
A: They don't know it's about MTG.
I had no interest in looking at the MTGS wiki until I learned that the MTGS Wiki is about MTG. I learned this mere minutes before making this post.
If, however, it was called "MTGS's MTG Wiki," I would have hit that thing as soon as I saw it. Right now, the name sounds like a jerkfest. Consider changing it.

But, in my futile self-protest, I'm also rather cynical, and I think that there's absolutely no traffic whatsoever.
I find myself siding with you on this issue on most, if not all, scales. So... 'yes'.

I wish it were MTG Wiki, but the editorship is still MTGS geeks, dudes, and whatever generic archetypes of forumgoers there are. Lol.
On the flipside, MTG Wiki is too pretentious.

I find myself siding with you on this issue on most, if not all, scales. So... 'yes'.
A microcosm.
Semantics, semantics; my brooding overanalysis - of the terms 'slander' and 'libel', forms of defamation - is truly a foolish 'activity', bah.
Haha.
I wish it were MTG Wiki, but the editorship is still MTGS geeks, dudes, and whatever generic archetypes of forumgoers there are. Lol.
On the flipside, MTG Wiki is too pretentious.
Anyhow, I shall try to make the effort to try to look into what can be done to resolve and rectify this riddle.
ZOMFG! You wrote the Old Testament!:o
I (or my alternate self) now worship you... ehm... your alternate self (which would then be something like God, so it would be 'ZOMFU').
Now seriously: Yeah, just FYI, I do check some Wiki entries, but sometimes it's just to see what kind of MADNESS! I'll come across.
Hey, does one need to have 1k posts+ to earn a whole wiki entry? Or just belonging to 'teh clique' is enough? (I'm guessing the latter).
I like 4/4s for 7.
