It's spelled out (and bolded) in the forum rules of the Magic Rulings section that you are supposed to use card tags. It's so that it is easy for everyone within the forum to answer your question appropriately.
When you don't link correctly to the card, you get warned that you are supposed to.
You aren't being picked on or anything, that's just how the rules of the Magic Rulings forum are.
It's just a warning; not worth the fuss. But you going just a little out of your way (a few mouseclicks) makes it much easier for the rules folks, who, you have to admit, are providing us a god service. Reading the forum rules for anywhere you're going to post is important, though, either way.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
However, if someone has clearly attempted to link and just done it wrong by accident, I don't think the mods should give warnings. A PM pointing it out is sufficient really.
This is true - for example, card tags where the card's name is misspelled, or [crad] tags. That at least displays an attempt to comply with the rule.
But the rule is pretty simple, and common courtesy: If you mention a card that is relevant to the question (or, in a deckbuilding forum, the deck), you should make that card's text readily available to anyone who wishes to help answer your question.
I'm more disturbed by the apparent perception that we should allow users to break the rules with just a PM saying "don't break the rules." That's exactly what a warning is. It's saying "read the rules."
A warning is not the end of the world, and it does not mean that the mods dislike you or are out to get you.
It means you goofed up; now you know and will do better, and if you don't, there's a record that you were asked not to break the rules. What's the option? Have every mod telepathically tell each other "I told this user to not break the rules"?

For the record, no, the moderators do not have a quota of any sort. We don't like giving out warnings or infractions, contrary to what some might possibly think.
In this specific case, the warning for use of card tags in the Rulings forum, I believe it was justified, as every other user who has done the same thing has been given the same warning as you have, no matter the postcount, time as a member, or what have you. There's an announcement in Rulings that states: please use card tags. The reason for this is the fact that in this particular forum, when you are asking for a ruling from one of our rules experts, the wording on a card is a significant factor. It's difficult to rule on a card without its Orcale text in front of you, so out of courtesy, we ask that you use the tags so that we are better able to answer your question in a timely manner.
Warnings are just that- you can't get banned over a warning, they are merely reminders to have a closer look at the rules we have set in place for this site.
alejo, I realize that this has upset you, but those are the rules as set up by the moderators, globals, and admins of this site. On the surface it may seem stupid, but we're not doing it to be jerks. In this case, it was justified.

Not all the mods are anal retended on the rules BUT some of the rules arfe there to prevent further issues from happening.
But also some of the rules are created for the sake of the laziness of many on this site and how the lazy ones bicker and bicker about things.
You are stuck in a cross fire and Sorry you got stuck.
This is from someone that help make some rules and Have broken MANY of them. Dont give up on the site at all. Just remember to bring up issues wiuth mods out in the open on there mod desk. BUT dont send nasty PMs... it wont help your case at all...
This forum is one of the most fair I'm a member of and I'm not just saying that either.
Its just common courtesy to put cards in card tags so people can read it if they don't know what it is. Many people aren't 100% fluent in English but may recognize a card by its picture. There aren't many rules here so they're not that hard to follow.
I myself got a warning the first time I posted in the Rules forum without card tags, so now I always do. It's not like the mods ban you for not putting card tags. I think many members have gotten warnings for this exact same thing; it's really no big deal.
Some threads are more severe on rules than others. All it takes is reading the rules. Especially in tech. areas where advise is being asked for and given. It is more than courtesy to use card tags it is the rules. It doesnt apear as the mods are picking on anyone. Just following the rules. I myself am guilty of getting a warning for not reading the rules of specific threads before I posted. Mistakes happen, learn from them and move on.

Or, you know, just don't post in Magic Rulings. I totally agree that most of the arcane things they warn and infract for in that forum are overly anal, and it bugs me, too, so I only visit there as a last resort. I'll go to three other sites to find a ruling on something I'm doing on this site before I try to post anything in that forum.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'

.......... really? The rules to follow there aren't complex, or even that strict. It's actually pretty much just common sense. I don't think I quite grasp why anyone has problems with it.
Using the card tags helps quite a bit for most ppl like myself. I play STD. Yet, I haven't memorized every single deck out there. Therefore, it's a good thing to have for us here.

It isn't about complexity or strictness. It's about common sense. You can be on topic in that forum with an intelligent and reasonable post, and still get infractions, and it's stupid. So I don't waste my time.

If you post in the Extended forum about how a card is based on the novel, you'd be spamming. If you post about rumors in Market Street, you'd be spamming.
I can't see how you figure posting deckbuilding strategy in the Rulings forum is any different.

Yes, he got a warning. As of the last forum software update only regular users cannot see the little cards anymore. Only mods and the affected party can see the little cards. As a result, most of us have taken to stating what type of penalty was assessed in the mod text to compensate for the lack of visible cards.
Anyway, I don't have much to say on the original topic other than I agree with people in favor of rules. As CharlieD said, we have a lot of members here. Things would get out of hand very quickly if we didn't have rules. And I happen to believe they are mainly common sense and common courtesy rules, so I see nothing wrong with them (especially not the ones in question).

Not that this is the place for discussion of my infraction, but it wasn't deckbuilding strategy. It was specifically answering the implied question of whether or not two cards were a combo.
My point is not that deckbuilding strategy should be allowed, but that on-topic comments should be allowed. My infraction was unjustified because I wasn't posting outside the rules of the forum in the first place, but the rules in Magic Rulings are overly anal anyway.

I agree with you OP... This forum does have silly rules, especially card tags.
I've been here for a long time now and I forgot one day and was warned for it.
It's not that big of a deal really is it?
Oh noes.... Most people know what the cards do anyway, and you would assume that rules people would know them as they are super smart with the rules and such.
Is it perhaps too much to ask to have this rule removed?
I dunno, what if newbies are looking through a rules thread, then see there is no card tags? then they wont know what the card does and probly make mistakes with cards, which wouldn't of happend if they were just able to read the cards rather than having to go (or be to lazy to) search up the card, tags are actually one of the things I like about this forum.
I would be unhappy to see this rule removed.

But if they are newbies, chances are that they won't have grasped the complex combos and situations that are covered in the rulings forum.
It really is a kick in the 'nads for all the new people who join to ask a question, only to be infracted on their first post for not putting card tags.
It seriously puts people off this website.

Stop blowing things out of proportion, and follow the rules. As I've said over and over and over, a slight difference in the wording on a card has huge ramifications for answering questions, so no, it's not only for newbies.

I can't recall ever having infracted a user for their first post for failure to use card tags... or ever having infracted anyone for failing to use card tags on first offense. We do issue warnings for this kind of thing on first offense, but please do not confuse warnings and infractions as the two are not synonymous here.
By posting a question in the Rulings forum, you are asking other members to perform a service. We believe it entirely reasonable that if you are asking other members to perform this service, that you make it as easy on them as possible by taking the extra 13 keystrokes per card to add card tags.
When I first started posting, I was giving a warning via PM about Card Tags. I use them now where I'm supposed to. And let me tell you...it was easy. Get over it fella, you're overreacting. It's a good rule and it makes sense...especially for people like me who haven't been playing forever...I don't know every card by heart.

I actually like that this site has something resembling enforced rules; a lot of sites these days are nothing but children posting mindless dribble that is completely unreadable and intentionally breaks the rules, but they are never reprimanded.
If anybody has ever tried to read the GameFAQs message boards, they know what I mean.
As for the card/deck tags - they are really nice everywhere, and help everybody make more intelligent and relevant posts. Thus they are good to use.
