I see this line the internet is serious business used so much on these forums but always sarcasticly. Why is this? The internet is serious business! Think of all the stuff that happens on the internet every day. All kinds of people use it even the highest ranked government officials and the president to convey important messages. So why is it sarcasticly serious business? You guys are prolly the 2nd highest looked at mtg site, you should take yourselves seriously! This site is mega important to the mtg community and lowering yourselves like this seems stupid. Why is this and dont you guys agree with me???
This is basically the type of post that gets that reponse. While the internet has a lot of serious things going on, that doesn't mean you should take it seriously. The majority of the internet is decidedly not serious, whether it be stupid, for entertainment, or just lies in general. The interweb should always be taken with a grain of salt, as there's no guarantee anything on it is true.
I personally, use the internet daily at work. We actually have forums that people from our organization, from around the world, contribute to. The internet has cut down on a significant amount of paper mail.
Most of the things I do at work would be far more labor intensive without the internet.
I'm sure you were aware of this possibility already, and just wanted to get this in before someone else feels it necessary to say, "OMGZOZ I USE TEH INTERNETS FOR STUFFS!"
The internet has no real relevance to anyone's real life and never should.
It's the internet.
???
What about all of the people who use it for work? Even this site, a mtg forum, is serious because people talk high level strategy about decks. Just because some people go to sites that arent serious doesnt mean the whole internet isnt serious.

Agreed. Many people feed their children based on their ability to play magic. By saying that the internet isn't serious you are basically saying you wish their children would die.
Everyone has their right to excellent magic strategy. I'm sure you wouldn't want to violate this right. In fact, I think this should be included in the upcoming mtgsalvation constitution.
It's a site about a game. If you are truly serious about a game involving cardboard crack, then I truly feel for you. I also feel you need to get out more, and get a girlfriend and/or boyfriend.

It's quite obvious you're being sarcastic, but I think Chipper may have a point. The internet is clearly used for serious business by the President and government officials and so on. It's also the home of mtgsalvation, which is similarly important. And obviously, mtgsalvation is serious business.
And on another note, yes, the internet is serious business in the same way that comedy is serious business. It isn't, but you can sure as hell pretend it is.
What I mean by that is that you can post the truth online all the time, be dead serious, but most of the time other people won't.
The internet is not serious business, nor will it ever be. It should be treated pretty much completely separately from real life. What does piss me off though is people who feel the need to state this fact every single ****ing post they make. We get the idea.
"Hello! I've come to serenade you. I can't play guitar. I can't play this accordion either, but I thought it'd be less obvious."

The term does not poke fun at the "internet," but rather the "internet social life". It pokes fun at the people who are so engrossed within the going-ons within the internet, such as stuff that happens with their "friends" they know through the internet, that they take everything on it seriously. They're the kinds of people who truly are emotionally distraught because a thread was locked, or get upset because slashdot is full of lolponies posts today. They are the stereotypical Internet EmosTM who take the going-ons within the internet social structure seriously. They are, for instance, the reason that drama springs up on forums the vast majority of the time.
The internet outside of these implications, such as work-related tasks, do not apply to this statement. There is no social interaction within this use, only work-related interaction and the like.
The added "social life" is quietly implied within the phrase.

You shouldn't take the internet so seriously, spanglegluppet. It's not serious business. Sheesh.

Now I had no job, and the truth was, I didn't want one. Unemployment took care of my Taco Bell and Cloves needs - and mom paid the rent and filled the refridgerator despite her nagging - so why get a job? The computer was all I really needed.
Note:Yes there are some aspects of the internet being serious, but people getting together over the internet and have some fun getting something thrown into their face that "THis is serious business! Quit playing around" is pretty ridiculous, since this is centered on a game.
In danger of seeming like I take the Internet too seriously I'm going to close the thread. This is all just spam anyways.
