I am at the point now where I have built literally hundreds of commander decks. Its rare that I actually spend much money on cards for a deck as in a lot of cases the cards I am missing are narrow and cheap cards for them. In a lot of cases making a new deck only costs me as much as $20-30 at this point because my collection is so vast.
I build new decks and kill off others all the time so if I am at a point where I don't want to dismantle something, I just don't. I dismantle decks because I stopped playing them generally. This is coming from someone who really doesn't have much for budget constraints though. I have at least 4 of most every staple in the game with a few less of the reserve list cards.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Nope. If I don't want to break it apart permanently, I don't. And if I do want to, I'm not enjoying it enough. Once you've built enough decks, you get used to taking them apart, too. Aside from the dozen or so decks that I keep together at all times, I also have 2,000 matching sleeves with a modular collection of cards that I use to build/rebuild decks for a few weeks before tearing them down to build/rebuild other decks.
No. I have only taken apart 4 decks, and I hated all 4 of them.
I currently have 17 decks. I have rebuilt some of them (changed commanders and half the deck in one case), but for the most part I only take apart decks if they truly fail to do what I wanted them to do in the first place.
Gracias for the emotional support. Favorite decks or commanders over the years? Looking for some inspiration. All the best to you.
That's hard to say. I like a lot of things about a lot of commanders. At a lot of times I have had different things about different commanders that I like. My favorite archetypes tend to be draw go style of decks where I have a lot of responsive options. Odric, Master Tactician might have been one of my favorite commanders of all times even though I think ultimately it didn't work out that well for me I really liked a lot of the tech cards and challenge with him.

I also do this, but I only have one truly permanent deck and about 3k unique cards (closer to 5k with duplicates, primarily for other formats) in matching sleeves. It's rare that any of my non-Jaya decks last more than a month or two at the outside.
Absolutely! I tend to only take a deck apart if I want to build a new one and need key cards in that deck. But I'm always sad to do it and in some instances I re-make the deck if the other deck I build doesn't go according to plan.
I just retired Derevi again in order to losen up some spells and mana for Niv Reborn. Kinda feel I will mis it especially sinc eit was so good but I won almost every time with it so I kind of won't mis the "this is too op" thoughts plaguing my mind. She the only one that I have an emotional connection to and I love building and tearing apart decks so otherwise I don't have this problem too much. Maybe I have too much of a problem being unattached to my decks. :/ It will get better though as a new deck in grains itself into you.
I used to have a hard time taking anything apart. But I also disliked having subpar cards, and I also didn't like buying a ton of fetchlands for every deck I made.
That's why I merged everything together to make one collection of singleton cards. I make a new deck every week or two, then disassemble it when I get bored. It's a good system, would recommend.
No, I don't regret it. Usually, if I've taken apart a deck it's because it wasn't fun/didn't work/worked too well for my meta.
In other words, if it's fun and I liked it, I keep it. But yeah, I'm at the point, too, where I'm not having to buy too many individual cards for a deck build. I suppose I had to buy Phyrexian Dreadnought for the Jarad deck I took apart, but it turned into Kresh anyway, so the card stayed. (My original Phyrexian Dreadnought was hanging out in Lazav, who still has him, and I didn't have multiples of a card so niche.)

I second this. I do the same thing, only I have multiple decks built and try to build new ones from the unused cards. The it really gets me looking at cards I wouldn't otherwise use and makes each deck feel fresh.

Generally I feel a little sad when breaking one down because I put some effort into making it in the first place.
Having said this, the decks I take apart have generally run their course. Generally if I don't bother taking a deck to the shop to be able to play for 6 months or add to it in that time it's time to break it apart. Id say I only really have 3/4 decks at the moment despite having way more completed piles available to me.

EDH BRGKresh the BloodbraidedBRG, A box of lands and ideas.
Modern: RG Titanshift. A deck made of cards too stupid for EDH.
Retired: Lots. More than I feel you should suffer through or I should type out.
I say the vast majority of Deck i have built, some hit harder than others. I did not Enjoy Sekki, Seasons' guide so no remorse. On teh other Hand Arcum Dagsson was my first ever long term deck, and when i took it apart i have a lot of feels. Same with my Nin, the Pain artist deck.
I do not believe i will ever take my Dragon deck apart, but if I do, it will be a lot of feels too.
It depends on the deck and the reason why its being dismantled really if there is remorse or not. If I don't enjoy how the deck is performing then its an easy process, other times its more because the decks just don't get played because they are of a too low power level to hold their own in my playgroups. Lately I've halved my collection of decks for the latter reason, which obviously was disappointing in some cases but also will make it easier to maintain the remaining decks. So I just pulled those decks out for a final game, usually just solidifying my reasons in taking it apart while also giving it a final chance after having been on the shelf for quite some time.
Unless you're selling or giving your cards away, the deck is never really gone.
I just recently resurrected a deck that I had retired about four years ago because it had gotten stale. The intervening years gave a bunch of cool new effects for the deck to play with and ended up with a deck that plays just differently enough from the old version to not feel stale.
Sure, you feel sad retiring that deck now, but give it some time and it can rise like a phoenix to new heights if you really want it to.
Usually not, but there is the occasional deck I remember fondly and might return to one day, since after a few years said deck idea would have a lot of new toys to play with as noted above.
If I retire a deck, it's probably for a reason related to how little I play it - be it because it's underpowered, not fun to pilot, not fun for my opponents, plays too close to another deck of mine, plain boring/streamlined, or I just have a better commander idea for same color combo. I try to keep to one-per-color-combo. (Even then, I have two vastly different from each other Mardu and Esper decks because just too many tasty things.)
I have had the occasional case where I took apart a deck I had just built and thus "wasted" the money put into it, but given that the cards I actually have to buy for decks these days are pretty much old oddballs we don't have a copy of, it's not much of a monetary loss. (I admit that sometimes I buy a card just because I can't find a copy of random Mirrodin uncommon despite being pretty sure there's several floating around somewhere...)

At last count I had built about 130 different generals over the course of my EDH career and some of those have been built many times. Pulling apart and rebuilding is a more or less constant process for me. Some of the repeat favorites are Jaya Ballard, Task Mage, Estrid, the Masked, Tajic, Blade of the Legion, Dralnu, Lich Lord, and Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter.

Steel Sabotage'ng Orbs of Mellowness since 2011.
But in reality it I’m gonna change the theme of it
Original 5-color alt win tribal now it’s gonna be a counter focused deck and alt win/tokens/Superfriends is the sub-themes
No remorse since looking at my current blueprint of the revision it already looks way better in power compared to before
