1. I use this deck for Commander on MTGO, so while cards like Sol Ring would be great to add, they aren't online yet.
2. Some cards, like Legacy Weapon, are pet cards. They may not be the most efficient or powerful options, but I like them, so they stay.
3. In a 100 card singleton format, I value cards that have versatility, hence vindicate, maelstrom pulse, adjudicator, the commands, the charms, etc. I know a card like swords to plowshares is great for creature removal, but overall I prefer a card like Putrefy, which will take care of most creatures and handle artifacts to boot.
4. I have a very minor sacrifice theme (Miren, Greater Good, Bound//Determined) in order to be able to sweep the board with Child. I added Keiga, Archon and Mycoid as ways to further capitalize on this theme.
5. Some cards I am on the fence about: Naya Charm, Maelstrom Archangel and Angel of Despair. These are probably the first cards I would replace with any changes you may suggest. I am also always interested in new instants to add, as I dislike having to tap out on my turn.
What about Greater Gargodon? When Child of Alara is about to hit the bin, you can sac all of your various stuffs so then next turn your swinging with the fattie against a clear board.
Hoofprints of the stag looks pretty weak, you don't have a ton of card draw, or at least enough so its really abused, but it also dies if a child of alara dies.
I'd toss in a few more counters if you dislike tapping out. Voidslime is incredibly versatile, and i like suffocating blast
How about Bant Charm? if you want versatility, thats like it.
Is commander multiplayer? if so, then Minds Eye is a good addition. Heck, Minds Eye is pretty good in single player aswell (however, in 5c, there are plenty of better options for single player)
I cant help but feel that Phyrexian Furnace should be replaced by better GY hate, i guess its a bit more pinpoint, but i feel that Tormod's Crypt, Relic of progenitus, or heck Scrabling claws would fill that slot better
I was hoping that Hoofprints would give me some long term incremental advantage, but I agree that it is weak. I like your argument for Gargadon, so I will give it a try. Even if I don't sac Child to it, it will still give me a little bit of extra value out of creatures that are about to die anyway.
Voidslime has moved in and out of the deck, I will consider trying it again.
I agree that Bant Charm is great, which is why it's already in the deck.
Commander is 3-4 (usually 4) player multiplayer. I know everyone plays Mind's Eye in EDH, but honestly I don't like it that much. Obviously, if left unchecked you can go completely bonkers and draw a million cards. But there are two drawbacks to me: 1. It ALWAYS draws an immediate answer, so I just spent 5 to not affect the board in any way and basically paid 5 mana to duress a disenchant effect, and 2. If you draw a card off of it, you paid 6, to draw 2, you paid 7, etc. You need to draw six or seven cards to make it better than something like Allied Strategies (which costs half as much at that point). I imagine you were referring to cards like Strategies when you said there are better options for 1v1; I think cards like that are better than Mind's Eye even in Multiplayer, just because you are getting a guaranteed 3-5 cards (Thirst, Opportunity, Fact, etc). I know everyone loves Mind's Eye and I can see that it is powerful in the abstract, I just don't really like it.
I agree that Phyrexian Furnace isn't great for 'yard hate, I just like it better than the alternatives. Tormod's Crypt is great for nuking a yard, but it won't cantrip for me in an emergency; Relic nukes my yard as well, and I am relying on a lot of recursion to grind people down; and Scrabbling Claws lets my opponents choose which card goes, so they can keep annoying cards around longer than with the Furnace. Just the best of a limited selection, imo.
Once again, thanks for the suggestions! I will try to find room for Gargadon and Voidslime.
In a WUBRG deck, Worldheart Phoenix is kinda bonkers. Then again, I like the WUBRG knights, too, so what do I know?
Relic's pretty cool in that he gets Child back into the castable RFG as well as hating all other GY's. If you don't like Relic, Tormod's is definitely your best bet.
Gargadon's a great idea that I think I may steal. He even gives you a sac outlet for Child if need be!
I've been thinking of Belbe's Portal, naming "Avatar". What do you think?
