Aluren is an instant speed combo deck that can win inresponce to anything that isnt split second ex. Extirpate. The whole reason that this deck isnt palyed very often is due to the fact that Imperial Recruiter is very expensive. While this deck can be played without it, it does make it a bit harder to pilot. The whole reason to play this, is becuase you can win in responce to ANYTHING. Normally the deck can be only GUB but if youhave the money or you already have the Imperial Recruiter then you splash enough R for your own meta and tastes.
Aluren ~ The namesake of the deck, duh. Cavern Harpy ~ The other 3rd of the mainly used combo to kill your opponent. Use its "Comes into play" ability to bounce: Parasitic Strix ~ The last portion of your combo that you need. Since Cavern Harpy is a black permanant its ability triggers and you start your combo. Gaining basicaly 1 life for every 2 of theres you take. Force of Will ~ Helps protect your board and spells while you combo out. Cabal Therapy ~ Helps protect you before you combo out. Brainstorm ~ You are playing U and fetch lands so its essential.
These are the must-have spells of the deck. As for what ever you may decide to play your mana base will change.
Cards you should have
Coiling Oracle ~ A 2 CMC critter that nets you a card or an untapped land. Also helps you dig for your combo pieces. Also pitches to Force of Will. Raven Familiar ~ Reuseable creature Brainstorm. Imperial Recruiter ~ While expensive, still very helpfull in finding your compo pieces, and your answers. Man-o'-War ~ This or its counterpart can be used to help you in getting all of your pieces together or reusing another untility creature already on the battlefield. Dream Stalker ~ The alternative to Man-o-war. Arctic Merfolk ~ Almost never seen but can be used. (never tested.) Selkie Hedge-Mage ~ Can net you infanite life, effectively letting you dig through your whole deck if need be. Letting you change from Combo to Aggro or Control depending on your build. Eternal Witness ~ Lets you get back anything you could possibly need. Ex. Fetchlands, Force of Will, another blue card to pitch to Force of Will, creature that you sacraficed or had to discard.
Optional Cards
Gaddok Teeg ~ Run as a small protector for opponents Force of Will, and can also stop them from comboing out Ex. Ad Nauseam, Time Spiral. Phantasmal Image ~ Can be run to copy anything on the field already and can be bounced by your Cavern Harpy to be anything else you need. Pact of Negation ~ Used normally on the turn you are trying to combo out, haveing extra Force of Will type cards are always helpful. Slaughter Pact ~ Helpful in killing those pesky Tarmagoyf, or Gaddok Teeg in maverick style builds. (not tested) Shardless Agent ~ Being able to cast your Living Wish at instant speed or to find other enablers is really helpful. (some testing, roughly 10 games) Intuition ~ Can be used to search out combo pieces and cast as a T2 to find Aluren. Show and Tell ~ Want to run something more than 3 CMC? Then this is the way to go.
Alternate Kill/Control/Disruption
Alternate Kill
Ghitu Slinger + Cavern Harpy + "Bounce Critter"
While it can be used to kill, it does not net you any lifegain while trying to combo out. So it may kill you before you kill them. Add in an Essence Warden and you go from a 2 card combo to a 4 card. Not reccomended. (and never tested) Maggot Carrier + Cavern Harpy + Essence Warden
Again turning your 2 card combo into a 3 card combo. Only advantage here is Maggot Carrier does not target like Parasitic Strix does. Still not reccomended. (and never tested) Shardless Agent + Cavern Harpy + Guttersnipe Even though it hasnt come out yet, if you want to make it a one of in your deck it might be a decent way to take out your opponent. (not tested)
If it says (not tested) next to any card or card combination, then its because I have not personally tested it. It doesnt mean anyone else hasnt.
Also i did my best to make sure that all my poor grammer and worse spelling were correct. If you find anything wrong with anything in my primer, please send me a private message so the fourm doesnt get filled up with all my errors and we can concentrate on the deck and how to play it.
Hope you had as much fun reading this as I did writing it.

If wizards would print a green, black and white version of Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast Painter could be done in every color.
I don't like Gaddock Teeg in Aluren because he keeps you from casting Aluren. I'd recommend Thalia, Guardian of Thraben instead; all she does is make Aluren cost 5 mana (and your own protection spells cost 1 more mana), and she similarly disrupts Storm and High Tide. She doesn't stop FoW from being cast, but she does make it more expensive. The awesome thing is that you can still combo off freely with her out.
Gaddock Teeg, is for after you cast aluren. As for Academy Rector it would be turning the deck into 5 colors which will stretch the already rung out manabase. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben may work out pretty well, I'll have to give it a try.

The problem decks (I.E. ones that I personally constantly lose against) are GW toolbox (not sure what it is in america), RUG Delver, and NIC FIT. For the most part Affinity, ANT, and sometimes dredge can go faster than this. I was constantly playing against a friend and those are almost 50-50 matches. Most of the time the Cabal Therapy can strip the things that will hurt, Force and Pact can usually keep you alive long enough to combo out or if you have to, turn into aggro. There are also a couple cards I have not tested but I may put in the SB to wish for. I was also given a good idea from the Lucky Charms Primer to put in a single Painters servant and then add some Green Sun's Zenith. That way we can tutor for anything we need. Hard part is how do we get a singleton Servant from 60 cards just so we can abuse it as a tutor helper?

I have thought about that a lot bigtop, but have not gotten around to it. The thing is if that was the other wincon in the SB they would only be 1 of's for me due to the fact that I run a wishboard. I am not averse to trying it at all though.

@LurkingMatt, I have given that no thought whatso ever right now, but it will be at the front of my mind for a while, just due to the fact that critters that give me problems are: Tarmagoyf, Delver of Secrets and Knight of the Reliquary. and it seems like it would be worth the trade unless we can find something to drop for it.

Ahoy hoy again Combolover! I have a few suggestions for ya now that I have finally gotten around to reading this primer! First, Man-O-War is bad. He targets and costs more than dreamstalker. He does, however, allow you to bounce an enemy creature which may warrant him as a 1 or 2 of. Also, out of all of the games we have tested you have never mentioned Arctic Merfolk. That card is the best of the options I think as returning a creature is part of the casting cost and cannot be stopped
As far as adding painters servant and grindstone, I agree with you that there is no space within the wish board for it. You could always play a 1 of grindstone main and the painter in the board to wish for if you happen to draw the grindstone.
Have you tested baleful strix? He is a great blocker, pitches to force, and draws a card. He could replace Coiling Oracle as the information is hidden but you cannot get the extra land drop. I do not know which is more important in this deck.
If I could noremac, I'd run both. The deathouch is very important becuase I can think of several times it would have saved me against aggro. The land drop is just as important becuase it nets you the mana you need to cast the dead wish in your hand to combo out. I may just run 1 recrutier in the SB and pull the other from the main to run better cantrip creatures. Not sure yet I'll have to do some serious testing when I have the time.

At what point does just running the Recruiters and no wish become better? It gives less options I know but how often do you see a wish and say "thank god this is wish instead of recruiter?"
Im not really sure what the charm would/could do at this point in time. I have been out of the game for a while but I cant honestly remember when it would have helped me. Examples?

Now just need to research and see if you can respond before the "Begining of your end phase" with dropping them all.
Also new spoiled card that may help us, Signal the Clans, which states: Search your library for three creature cards and reveal them. If you searched for three cards with different names, choose one at random at put it into your hand. Shuffle the rest into your library.
Does this mean if only two of them are the same you still have to dicard? We'll find out soon enough!!!
Side note: Phantasmal Image is a wonderful card and wroks GREAT with Cavern Harpy due to the fact that it does not target. WOOT!!!
That being said im going to change my decklist a bit but im not sure what last two cards I should drop. Sugesstions?
Don't you need 4 "Biovisionary"s (i.e. 1 of the real thing and 3 Phantasmal Images) in order to win? I can't see any way to reliably tutor more than one Image per game except by using Imperial Recruiter (search for Dream Stalker, Cavern Harpy, etc.), which means we may as well go back to the Parasitic Strix win con that takes fewer slots.
@Lectrys, thats the beauty of it. You use one Imperial Recruiter to find the Phantasmal Image (responding to any effects your opponenet tries to play) and searching up the rest with the last card that you search out with your "fake recrutier" to find your Cavern Harpy to bounce all of them before the STP hit one and then you find your Biovisionary and play the origional at the "end of your second main phase, retain priority, then respond to the trigger of Bio by casting three of your four images. THIS IS AWSOME!!!! (atleast I think so)
@lurkingmatt, I cant drop a land because I either get perfect land hands or not enough land hands, but I will think about one raven and one wish that would sound about right. And yes every new card that is spoiled can be talked about here if its prevelent to the deck unless I missed something in the fourm rules.

1. 9/22/2011: Phantasmal Image's ability doesn't target the chosen creature.
2. 9/22/2011: Phantasmal Image copies exactly what was printed on the original creature and nothing more (unless that creature is copying something else or is a token; see below). It doesn't copy whether that creature is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on.
3. 9/22/2011: If the chosen creature has {X} in its mana cost (such as Primordial Hydra), X is considered to be zero.
4. 9/22/2011: If the chosen creature is copying something else (for example, if the chosen creature is another Phantasmal Image), then Phantasmal Image enters the battlefield as whatever the chosen creature copied.
5. 9/22/2011: If the chosen creature is a token, Phantasmal Image copies the original characteristics of that token as stated by the effect that put the token onto the battlefield. Phantasmal Image is not a token.
6. 9/22/2011: Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied creature will trigger when Phantasmal Image enters the battlefield. Any "as [this creature] enters the battlefield" or "[this creature] enters the battlefield with" abilities of the chosen creature will also work.
7. 9/22/2011: If Phantasmal Image somehow enters the battlefield at the same time as another creature, Phantasmal Image can't become a copy of that creature. You may only choose a creature that's already on the battlefield.
8. 9/22/2011: You can choose not to copy anything. In that case, Phantasmal Image enters the battlefield as a 0/0 Illusion creature, and is probably put into the graveyard immediately. It doesn't have the ability "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."
Number 2 states (unless I'm reading it wrong) that it doesnt copy the color, just the text.
706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object's characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The "copiable values" are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, expansion symbol, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by "as . . . enters the battlefield" and "as . . . is turned face up" abilities that set characteristics, and by abilities that caused the object to be face down. Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.

1. Play Aluren
2. Play Parasitic Strix
3. Play Cavern Harpy returning the Strix.
4. Repeat Step 2-3 untill your oponent dies.
Or if you don't have the cards needed in hand to combo out that turn: (assuming you are playing without imperial recruiter)
1a. Play a "dig creature" Ex. Coiling Oracle, Raven Familiar, then bounce it with your Cavern Harpy, Man-o'-war, Dream Stalker untill you find what you need.
Playing with Imperial Recruiter
1b. Play a "dig creature" Ex. Coiling Oracle, Raven Familiar, then bounce it with your Cavern Harpy, Man-o'-war, Dream Stalker untill you find Imperial Recruiter.
1c. Play Imperial Recruiter, searching for another Imperial Recruiter, untill you have all 4 on the battlefield. This way you can get around any Swords to Plowshares or any other instant speed creature removal. Use your last Recruiter to search for your Man-o'-war, or Dream Stalker.
1d. Use your "Bounce" creature to return your Recruiter and then find your Cavern Harpy.
1e. Replay your Recruiter again to search out your last combo peice Parasitic Strix.
Repeat steps 2-3 untill they die.
Cavern Harpy ~ The other 3rd of the mainly used combo to kill your opponent. Use its "Comes into play" ability to bounce:
Parasitic Strix ~ The last portion of your combo that you need.
(never tested.)
Selkie Hedge-Mage ~ Can net you infanite life, effectively letting you dig through your whole deck if need be. Letting you change from Combo to Aggro or Control depending on your build.
Eternal Witness ~ Lets you get back anything you could possibly need. Ex. Fetchlands, Force of Will, another blue card to pitch to Force of Will, creature that you sacraficed or had to discard.
(not tested)
Shardless Agent ~ Being able to cast your Living Wish at instant speed or to find other enablers is really helpful. (some testing, roughly 10 games)
Intuition ~ Can be used to search out combo pieces and cast as a T2 to find Aluren.
Show and Tell ~ Want to run something more than 3 CMC? Then this is the way to go.
Alternate Kill
While it can be used to kill, it does not net you any lifegain while trying to combo out. So it may kill you before you kill them. Add in an Essence Warden and you go from a 2 card combo to a 4 card. Not reccomended. (and never tested)
Maggot Carrier + Cavern Harpy + Essence Warden
Again turning your 2 card combo into a 3 card combo. Only advantage here is Maggot Carrier does not target like Parasitic Strix does. Still not reccomended. (and never tested)

Disruption/Control
Now they have no permanants. (never tested)
Rishidan Cutpurse + Ravenous Rats + Cavern Harpy
Now they have no hand and no permanants. (never tested)
I personally play a Wishboard but i will try to cover wish and non wishboards.
Wishboard
Bone Shredder ~ Again anti creature hate to wish for, but is sometimes to slow.
Drake Familiar ~ Anti Leyline of Sanctity, and Sneak Attack Normally works well.
Viridian Shaman ~ Because with only 1 Imperial Recruiter main deck we HATE Umezawa's Jitte.
Selkie Hedge-Mage ~ If you know you love the infinite life combo.
Cavern Harpy ~ Just incase the others get removed from the game, or you wish for it T2 because its the only piece you need.
Parasitic Strix ~ See above.
Dream Stalker ~ Again see above.
Imperial Recruiter ~ Get it T2 with your wish and you can start the combo out T3 if you have the propper landbase.
Phyrexian Revoker ~ Critter Version of the Pithing Needle.
Spellskite ~ Dont really use it that often but can be useful against most storm decks.
Aincent Tomb ~ Need that extra 2 mana the next turn to start your combo? This works great.
+1 or 2 Green fetchland
Non Wishboard
Depends on your local meta.
If it says (not tested) next to any card or card combination, then its because I have not personally tested it. It doesnt mean anyone else hasnt.
